The V500 Photo does everything you need in a multipurpose scanner.

The Epson Perfection V500 is the first scanner I've purchased so I can't compare it to others. I bought it to scan artwork to put online. Being a newbie, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I did my research on scanners prior to deciding on this one. Let's just say I'm not disappointed. I think it does a beautiful job and it's easy to use. I was unable to use the Photoshop Elements software that came with it because my operating system is too old. But I ended up downloading The Gimp (it's free!) and all is working harmoniously! I'm happy with my purchase!

PHOTO SCAN WORKS GREAT. THE DIFFERENT SETTINGS GIVES YOU OPPORTUNITY TO GET HIGHER RESOLUTIONS ON PHOTOS.
DOCUMENT SCAN WELL BUT I RECOMMEND GETTING THE AUTO DOCUMENT FEEDER.

Very quick to learn

I found the learning curve no real problem. It works quickly for what I purchased it to do. 3000 + slides to scan. The software does a good job of adjusting color/contrast on the first try. Have not scanned any negatives though that will be later. I have a dedicated film scanner and use it alot, but it takes a very long time to learn and scans are slow, but it is much higher resolution. For web use the V500 is perfect.

I've owned many scanners in the last 40 years and this one take's the cake for ease and simplicity of use. For newbe or advanced it's a bargain. I tried it out in all permutations paper to pdf, photo to auto jpeg, transparency to jpeg in auto format and then in some advanced settings. Very good results.

This was easy to setup and has been a pleasure to operate. I have scanned many slides from the 50's and 60's. When I first saw my grandparents photos on my HD screen it took my breath away.
