Slide digitization on Mac
on June 28, 2010

Installed the software on my G4 Powerbook, including Photoshop Elements. Easy installation and setup. Purchased to digitize my slide collection (~5000). Testing at the start (trying test slides at various resolutions/post-processing options including ICE) made it clear that I would have to make some decisions as to quality vs time. Using the post processing software really slowed down the total per slide scanning time, and it wasn't 100% effective meaning I would have to go over each slide and manually "clean". I decided it better to scan at lower resolution and use the saved time to do my own post processing with Photoshop. Even at 600dpi, the output was acceptable if not blown up too much. Color and contrast rendition was inconsistent depending on subject matter so some copies needed optimization.

Upgraded pc thought it was time to upgrade scanner. This works great, scanning alot of old photos and the color correction and backlight correction are a great asset.

Epson V500 quality scans and user friendly

After using my Epson 1640 Photo scanner for 14 years it started showing a blue vertical line in my scans so I decided to buy the Epson V500 photo scanner. I was very impressed with the scans of the Epson 1640, but, the scans I am getting out of the V500 are even better. I am a professional photographer and resolution is very important to me. I make a living in providing quality scans and as a result quality prints for my customers. I work in the windows 7 environment and set-up of the V500 Photo scanner was extremely easy. This scanner is even more quiet than my old scanner. If you want quality scans and an easy to use scanner that sync's effortlessly with any photo program, this is the scanner to get. I highly recommend it to anyone. I hope it gives me many years of service as did my old Epson 1640. By- the-way, the Epson 1640 blue line issue I mentioned above is a line you see only when the image was magnified 150%, other wise you cannot tell it was there. I gave my Epson 1640 to my daughter who is now using it to scan her regular school work.

Epson V500 Photo Scanner

I own many Epson products and find the same problem with all of them.
Their trays are very scimpy and fragil.
My V500 Photo scanner and my Artisan 800 printer work very well and produce great copies and photo scans, but when using the paper trays, slide & film strip holders you have to handle them with great care, and very gently.
I still would recommend them to others, as the finished copies & photo scans are really super.
The only other problem with the V500, is that I am iMac user and digital Ice does not work. My iMac is an Intel duel core with the latest OS X 10.6.4 operating system

Have been using scanner to copy old WW1 photos, 35MMslides and some stereo slides. They came out great. Have not used nearly all of the controls. I expect things only to get better. Have had a few problems, sent email to Epson and received solutions very promptly. I will consider Epson for any future equipment.

I haven't tried all of the iterations of this machine. I does a great job of copYing photos. The film strips and slides don't scan easily but I will figure it out and update the review. A very nice scanner.

Great for old slides

I purchased this device mainly to scan slides. I have 2000 of them and we are missing a lot of family history in my wife's scrap books.
It worked as advertised and produced excellent replicas of the slides with the faded colors automatically corrected.
I would recommend this scanner to anyone for this purpose.
