Worthy Installment to the Series

Pros: If you’ve played Guitar Hero (GH) before, GH3 is easy to pick up and play due to the fact that it plays just like its predecessors. The inclusion of substantially more master tracks is a very welcome addition to GH3. Master tracks, for those who don’t know, are the original recordings as you would hear on the artist’s album as opposed to the cover versions found in previous GH games. The Co-op Career Mode and Boss Battle Mode make for nice additions to the game and expand on the already great multiplayer aspect of the GH series.
Cons: GH3’s gameplay is a bit of a double-edged sword. While it’s fun and lives up to the standard of the GH series, it’s essentially identical to the previous titles. So much so that if you removed the Co-op Career Mode and Boss Battle Mode, the only difference between GH3 and GH2 would be the setlists. I will say that the additions to the multi-player aspect of the game are the right kind of additions to have given that for most people GH3 is a social game they’ll be playing either online or with friends in their living room. But there just isn’t enough new gameplay to really set GH3 that far apart from earlier installments in the series. This leads to a fairly unchallenging experience for anyone who played through and mastered earlier GH games. The other major Con is the inclusion of certain songs that I don’t personally feel have a place in a game that focuses on impressive guitar work. Examples include: “Sabotage” by the Beastie Boys, “Sunshine of Your Love” by Cream and “Bulls on Parade” by Rage Against the Machine. Beastie Boys = Rap not Rock. If we’re going to have Clapton, make it “Leila”. Most Rage songs are just repetitive power chords over and over again…kind of like their lyrics. And if the game’s subtitle is “Legends of Rock”, where are Jimi Hendrix and AC/DC? Weird: Not a pro and not a con, the “European Invasion” setlist in the career mode is just plain weird. Why? Because of the 5 songs in that setlist, only 2 are songs by European bands (Black Sabbath and $ex Pistols). The other three are all American (Weezer, Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth). This is even weirder considering that there are at least three other European bands in other setlists that could simply have been included in “European Invasion” (Cream, The Who and The Rolling Stones).
What's great about it: Familiar Gameplay, Lots of Master Tracks, New Multiplayer Modes
What's not so great: Familiar Gameplay = Unchallenging, A Few Song Selections Feel Out of Place

If you bought Gh2 you must buy this game. The graphics are 100xs better than its previous versions. The song selection is great with a wide variety of songs. There are a lot more unlock ables including a lot more guitars, songs etc. The new controller looks awesome and is easy to store in small spaces. This game is just overall amazing.
What's great about it: great graphics, awesome song selection, tougher than previous games, tons of unlockables, awesome new controller

This game rocks! We spent most of our Christmas break playing this game. It is really fun and hard to quit playing. There are song amazing classic and newer rock songs. With that said, be aware that there are some songs like 'Suck Your Kiss' and 'Talk Dirty To Me' that are not appropriate for younger kids. We don't allow our 8 and 10 year old to play certain songs. On the positive side you can't understand or even hear the lyrics to most of the songs and can focus on the challenging and fun music part of the game. Also, some of the characters you can choose to play are quite scarry or scantely clad, but there are some less intense characters you can choose from. This Game is rated T for teen for a reason.
What's great about it: fun game with great classic rock songs
What's not so great: some inappropriate lyrics, guitar players and songs

This game continues the advance of the guitar hero/ rock band age. The latest installment of guitar hero continues to show ongoing development in the series. Overall a very good pick/
What's great about it: Very easy to use, good over selection of tracks.
What's not so great: The pro-face off should allow the use of two different difficulties

DO NOT BY THIS GAME if you liked GH, GH2, and/or G

I think I'm pretty qualified to review this game. I fancy myself an accomplished Guitar Hero. I have conquered GH, GH2, and GH 80's on all levels including expert. Please heed my warning: TRY BEFORE YOU BUY. If you have played and enjoyed the previous GH versions, you'll be (at best) disappointed with GH3.
The Source of the Problem:
Harmonix, the original minds behind GH, are not involved with this latest game in the franchise. And Activison dropped the ball on the programming.
The NO fun game engine:
While the graphics are the best yet and the song selection is very good, the game-play is awful and does not have nearly the same response as the previous installments. You can hit some notes DEAD ON and all you get is the infamous "plink" sound indicating you missed the note. It was synced with the music very poorly. After several frustrating hours of playing, I could only muster a 21 note streak on MEDIUM. My kids also had the same experience and turned the game off after only a few attempts.
The Sound:
It's bad. Very mushy. This doesn't help the game play experience and makes it difficult to play along with the music. However, you can adjust some levels to make it tolerable.
The Warranty:
Of course you can't return it to any known retailer after it's open (exchange only) so I decided to contact Activision. I felt I should make a warranty claim based on the Workmanship clause. I know, that's probably reaching since the only way they could really honor that warranty is the completely rewrite the programming and re-release it. But this game IS THAT BAD and I was desperate to get my GH fix with some new material. Activision blew me off on each and every attempt. They basically said to take it back the store - which they know full well I can't get a refund. So really, the warranty isn't worth the paper it's written on.
In a nutshell:
If you’ve enjoyed the previous GH installments don't buy it for yourself and don't buy it as a gift if you actually hope the person you give it to will enjoy it - they will not. If you’ve never played GH before, maybe you won’t notice since you don’t have a comparison but it’ll end up on your shelf collecting dust with the other games you grew tired of quickly.
What's great about it: Graphics, Song selection
What's not so great: Game Play, Game interface, Weak Warranty
