Has some fine features

This freezer is just the correct size for limited space. Until two weeks ago it operated fine, but when it was opened things were thawing. Set at #5 things stayed frozen at 0 degrees setting. Serviceman suggested a new thermostat after using it 20 months.
It has been two weeks without a functioning freezer and was told a new thermostat is on order but would take at least a week to get and did not say how long to schedule the repair.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I loved this freezer, but it dies after 2 years leaving us with a huge loss of food and a terrible mess and smell that I can not get rid of.

Not made to last

So we have had this freezer for just over 3 years. No complaints over that time, worked well, defrosted it and cleaned it annually. Unfortunately it just stopped working. It lights up when plugged in, but the compressor won't kick on to cool. I didn't expect to have to replace this after 3 years, very disappointed.

Stopped working

Nothing is worse than a deep freeze that just stops working, while holding a years supply of meat. I was not expecting it to work 40 years like my parents deep freezer, but at least 5. So disappointed in this product.
Light stayed on and green, but the freezer is no longer cooling. It is kept inside, so it was not working that hard.

works well

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] at recommended setting, 4, things are frozen harder than in the refrigerator freezer. It seems to generate a lot of heat so it might be better situated in a garage.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Cold & Cheap
on August 22, 2012

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It works.
FUNCTIONAL:
- Keeps stuff frozen
- Chest style tends to be more efficient since the cold air doesn't dump out on the floor when you open it.
- Plastic liner in top is a bit flimsy, appears subject to damage if you are not careful
- Baskets and divider, while very helpful in organizing a chest freezer, are a bit flimsy, but so far after about a year holding up well.
- Sheet metal outside cover is very thin, subject to denting.
COST:
- Very reasonable cost, especially if you source carefully
- Operating cost is barely noticeable, keep it full tho. We put frozen gallon water jugs in it when not full, having added benefit of providing cold mass during a power outage.
BENEFITS OF NON-DEFROST FREEZER:
- Lower operating cost since in a self-defrost freezer, the process is executed with a heating element just like in your electric oven! (cool it down, heat it up, then cool it down!?!)
- So, your frozen bread stays frozen. In a self-defrost freezer your bread (and other low-density items) thaw every time the freezer defrosts. (We learned this last one from the GE Service Tech who repaired our GE frig.)

I purchased this product over 4 years ago and it has been one of the best investments I have made. I have had no issues with it and it has paid for itself several times over. Would highly recommend GE products to anyone.
