not what i expected

at about 300 pages, I ran out of black ink. got a generic. Then, it wouldn't print. Called support and the first question they asked is what toner was in the machine. As soon as they found out it was a generic. they told me i had no support. Put the old toner back in and called. They did not help me fix the printer. Found some things online from other users to help me through. at 700 pages, there is a drum on the inside that lost its coating.. the printer is shot. I am very disappointed in the way the printer dropped the blue tooth and wifi every time it went to sleep and how long this product lasted. VERY disappointed. I was getting read to buy this product for another office we are opening.. Guess i'm going back to the previous company printer brand.

Does *everything* we need, well

Love this printer.
It does absolutely *everything* we need (except print high-quality photos, for which we keep a dedicated photo printer). Laser? check. Color? check. Duplex? check. Inexpensive? Compared to competition, yes.
I also really appreciate that the software driver includes a checkbox for "Black & White", which I use for printouts that don't require color (so don't waste color toner).
This printer replaced a Dell color laser printer, with which I was NOT happy. It didn't do duplex, didn't have a B&W option, and after owning it for 6 months or so started making a horrible clatter and stopped working. Poor quality.
We have owned 5 Brother (B&W) laser printers over the last approx 12 years, and EVERY SINGLE ONE of them is still working!

Do Not Buy

The printer seems great at first but it is not meant to last. Just after the warranty period expires the fuser rollers disintegrate and pieces of the rubber rollers will jam your printer and make it unusable. This is a defective product and Brother does not seem interested in addressing this defect.

HL-3170CDW

Brother support is the worst I have encountered in my years of computing since my H-89 I assembled in 1980.
I bought a HP Laser Printer to replace my HL-3170CDW that repeatedly says I need to clean all the corona wires and the repair facility says I need to replace the factory Magenta cart and drum and the black cartridge. All this after less than three reems of paper. The 3170 is holding down a stack of newspapers in the garage.

Decent color printer

This is a decent color printer with a few caveats. First of all, it is not an inkjet so it has none of the good or bad traits of that type of printer. It is similar to a laser printer and should be compared to those.
Good: The first page finishes in 20 to 25 seconds with the following pages about 3 seconds a part. It prints of both sides of the paper (duplex), first one then the other, quickly. It prints in color. (The toner is fused to the paper so it doesn't run like an inkjet.) Large paper tray. Prints directly onto CDs/DVDs that have (blank) labels on them. It is a complete unit without having to pay extra for duplex printing or a paper tray that will hold more than 100 sheets of paper. Inexpensive.
Bad: The toner is expensive, but cheaper than it could be. (Color toner, just a few years ago, was way too expensive for most home users.) Color reproduction is not that good. Greens seem to be too dark and some other colors are off a bit. I used the installed software to self-calibrate, but it didn't completely fix the problem.
Other: There is a burning smell the first few print jobs, but it goes away and is normal for this type of printer. The instructions, wherever you find them are good, better than most, but they do leave out a few details.
I'm sure that I forgot to mention something, but it isn't important, whatever it was. That's because this digital color printer is the best value that I could find for doing what I need to get done. Aside from some minor points, it does what I need it to do well.

Did not last long...

I purchased my first HL-3170CDW March 2013 and soon after warranty expired I started to see issues with my prints. There was a pattern on a paper (like from some kind of a press) and some ghosting. Found that one of the rollers (black coated located above red(?) coated on a back of a printer) is cracked in multiple places with a coating coming apart. Big disappointment as the printer was lightly used (made enough prints to ran out starting black toner). Instead of spending 100$+ (my guess) on repair service I recently bought another one on promotion (to be able to save money on all my toners). Will monitor this failed roller closely on a new one...just in case this time I have extended warranty as well.

Our new Laser Color printer

We have in the past used ink jet printers for our students graduation certificates. The HL-3170CDW we purchased, delivers a 50% or more, sharper image for our students. We also have seen much less laser powder use compared to our old HP printer. We have owned the Brother printer for about 3 months and so far we are pleased with the quality of our printing our Photoshop images, and the cost of our printing per page.

DO NOT PURCHASE!

I have received an error message from day one with my printer (DRUM!) Finally I got sick of taking the steps to clear the error, and called "customer service" what a joke! I was expected to take my machine to the nearest service center; located about an hour away with out any promise this would correct the issue. After 3 more calls to the "customer service" department I was told of a presidents line I could contact to resolve my issues. They did send me a new printer with little trouble. Unfortunately the printer they sent worked for about 1 week. Now I cant even trouble shoot the problem. My printer is just dead in the water. Lucky for me I can now repurchase new drum units for more than the price of the machine. This will be the LAST brother product I purchase for my company.
