good purchase

it is a good printer but within the first year I had to get a new one because it was printing with big chunks on the paper and the writing was printed twice. even though we bought a brand new printer I got a refurbished printer. so it has had its ups and downs.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Very good value

I have used this printer as my main printer for about two months replacing an older HP multifunction printer. I am very happy with the speed, quality and economy of using this printer. I am glad I purchased it.

Does the job

I purchased this printer when I got tired of buying ink cartridges that dried up between print jobs. It does a good job overall, the print quality is very good. At this point, I can't comment on the toner life (pages per toner) because starter toners aren't intended to last.
The only negative is the Users Manual. It could do a better job of explaining the printer setup options.

Good print quality; poor stand-by mode

The print quality is good, although I'm bracing for the expected low output from the chinsy toner cartridges that come with the computer.
After the printer enters the sleep/stand-by mode, it fails to print the first "job" that I send it. It will wake up, but it won't print until I send the job again.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Adequate but has some shortcomings

This printer has all the features that the average individual might need. Adequate speed for single sided printing, good color reproduction and quick response including its shutdown into standby and sleep mode after use.
Where it disappoints is in duplex mode which is quite slow and the inability to load multiple sheet in the single feed tray. When using the single feed tray you must feed only one sheet at a time which can be time consuming.
I would recommend it for anyone who does not need these features. I would recommend that they make an add on tray for those who consistently use multiple sized media.

Excellent printer.

I had to purchase a replacement network printer when my present printer died. I purchased this HL-3170CDW not knowing what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. Very easy to interface to Linux. The performance is outstanding with very good color rendition and fast printing. By the time I walk to the printer it is already completed. The price is very reasonable for a printer of this quality.
