Used in a sole professional office. Copies are sharp and crisp. Machine is user friendly.
A bit noisy.

iscan/iprint doesn't work

I elected not to buy a laser printer with a scan/copy/fax function because of the iscan/iprint feature on this printer, but it doesn't work with my Apple products (iPad, iPhone). Getting the WiFi to work from the MacBook Pro itself was difficult, and recently the function quit working again for no apparent reason. Very frustrating.
Moreover, my original printer quit feeding paper into the print chamber and I was forced to get a refurbished model about 10 months after I purchased the unit from Costco. I expected ease of set up, ease of use, consistency of printing, along with the household convenience of WiFi. I also had to take the unit apart to send it off and put it all back together with no instructions. A return UPS label was not sent as was promised, so I had to carry the heavy unit to UPS to find that out; wait until a new label was sent, and then haul it in again to get it shipped back. I wish I had bought a printer, copier, scanner, fax machine from a different company.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Installation software disappoints

I found the installation more difficult on two computers operating Win 10, than I expected. The system is served by a Netgear C3700 modem/wifi router. I was able to get the printer to work briefly using WIFI. After turning off the computers and rebooting the next day, the printer did not respond to the wireless setup. I am currently using a USB connection, and it works well. I did not try an Ethernet connection; there were not enough open ports available on my modem.
I tired printing on some Christmas Card/glossy cardstock, and experienced streaking and smearing. I have not experienced the same degree, of that type of problem, using a laser printer in the past. If I were in the position to purchase a new printer, I would step-up to a laser unit. When using the glossy cardstock, I found the printer grabbing and positioning the card to be less than firmly positive, making it difficult to tell if the cardstock was properly positioned. This grab and position manual feed-through feature is more positive, and works well, when using normal printer paper of custom sizes.
The automatic duplex printing works well, along with color rendering on non-photographic compositions. I have not tried photo cardstock or picture reproduction from digital media. Regular printer paper feeds well from the automatic tray.
The set-up instructions are a bit more challenging than some printers I’ve used in the past. The instructions are very inclusive in documenting set-up options, except when it comes to differentiating the use of the units LED screen and buttons vs software options offered from the printer, “print choices” when selecting “print.” A lot of thought has gone into the set-up instructions in an attempt to make them more than adequate for a sophisticated user to get the most out of their printer.
Printer construction compares well with, perhaps even better, than other printers in this price range. I would rate it as a good value for the price paid.

High Quality. Low Price.

As a community concert band, we need to be able to revise our flyers and handouts on a moment's notice. Our schedule changes, our music changes, and we need to print short runs of our promotional material to reflect those changes. Local printers were happy to print 100 color copies for us for $100, single-sided. We would blow through our advertising budget in no time! We've been using the Brother HL-3170CDW for a couple of months, and we couldn't be happier. Excellent quality. Automatic duplex printing. We can print what we need, when we need it, at a price that isn't going to break the bank. This was an excellent investment for us..!

Great printer

It's always a bit stressful finding an affordable printer that "does it all" but this is a great choice for small businesses or any user that needs quality color printing fast. As a disclosure, I've been using Brother printers for the last six years and have never been let down; although each time my needs expand, I always shop around just to find that Brother is the way to go. If you're looking for a photo printer, this is not it. If you're looking for printing cardstock, envelopes, fliers, brochures, letters, etc. this is the way to go. It was packed well and setup was a breeze. We were printing from all three platforms in less than ten minutes of setup time. The wireless printing is great and the quality is undeniable. If I had one complaint, it would be that double side printing is a bit slow, but nothing I would consider debilitating or inhibiting. I would recommend this to anyone who needs a laser printer only. The multi-function machines are great as well if you need scanning, faxing, copying, and printing.

Reasonably Good

Generally works okay, but glitchy. Doesn't do well with anything thicker than 24 lb. bond and has a tendency to jamb. Still, for the price it's okay, but I buy the extended WTY. Have had to return 2 of them in last five years.
