Just what we wanted

Perfect desktop color laser printer, fast and efficient. We've bought Brother black-and-white laser printers in the past and always been satisfied with performance, cost and supplies. This was our first purchase of color, and the device was every bit as fine as the b&w's. For office tasks (though not for photograph quality), this is far preferable to any of the ink jet devices.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Laser color printing improves-not for photographer

Easy set up. Reliable networking. Excellent color on graphics. For photography, using laser glossy photo paper it is slow and a bit sloppy-visible banding. To successfully print color 8x10 you must use single feed straight through option. Print driver is too limited in its options. I like the printer but it's no substitute for high quality photo ink jet printers like Epson Photo.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

NO MORE MESSY INK

Very nice not having to "realign" the heads, worry about ink drying out or searching for the cheapest ink.
This printer starts at a moments notice, even when in a deep sleep, and prints high quality images.

Terrible Printer

While it prints great it has been a nightmare to keep online and now it seems like the wireless card is shot. After talking with a Brother care rep they were not only condescending but incredibly unhelpful. In short they gave me the name of a local repair business who I went to visit with the printer only to find out that the care rep was supposed to have given me some paperwork since the printer was under warranty (only 5 months old) which he didn't so a waste of a trip. It is now a giant paperweight - maybe I will get around to getting it fixed. I also own a black and white one which has the same issue of staying connected to the wireless network - nothing else in my house has this issue and being in the networking business I am confident that my network is solid.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Works great but bad ink yield

Love the printer but hate the ink yield. They say 1400 pages from a cartridge, I got 100.
Less than 10 percent. Costing a fortune in ink.
Prints great though.

Great for small ofice media production

The duplexing feature and crisp colors, allows our non-profit to produce our distribution print media at a very low cost.

Beyond expectations

I am very happy with my purchase of the HL-3170CDW. It has already paid for itself in the fact that I don't have to run around getting small color printing jobs done. Less time and aggravation.
