If you are looking for an SLR to use for both stills and movies, this is it. Wait no longer.
This will be a short review, since I've only had the camera for literally hours, but I'm so impressed with it. The movie mode, along with the dedicated button for that, is so good I can't think of a way to improve on it.
I started my Canon journey with an ELAN 7 film camera years ago, went to a 10D digital. Was very happy with that, so next came the 40 D. Wonderful step up. Then upgraded to the 60D because I wanted to be able to use an SLR for movies.
I was never really happy with the 60D for movies (wonderful for stills, though). Having to turn a dial to get into video mode was a pain, and the lack of autofocus turned out to be too much of a drawback to be practical FOR ME.
Now comes the 70D! I'm in heaven! The ease of use is absolutely wonderful. Autofocus is incredibly fast and accurate for stills, and so smooth for video. Canon has hit a high mark with this camera.
Right out of the box, I put on my most demanding lens, the 85mm F1.8. That lens has always given me fits to focus, since the depth of field is so small wide open. The 70D hits focus instantly and perfectly every time. I'm seriously impressed. I may never buy another camera.
Bottom line, if you've been waiting for a camera for video and stills, wait no longer. It's that good.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, fun to use
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great Camera

I purchased this camera as a replacement to my Canon 4D, which was stolen. Luckily my lenses were not with the 4d. The 70d is a great camera. Four features really stand out. The WiFi is a great addition. Touch screen and one touch focus lock is amazing. Just a few days ago , using that I took a pic of the Blue Angels going 500mph and it was crystal clear. Third is the flip out screen. I am 6'3" and can use on a lowered tripod and have a great view of the screen. The ultimate feature on this camera is the screen. The fact that the screen shows the picture you will take not what you see through the viewfinder. As you adjust ISO, Shutter speed or aperture the screen shows what the pic will look like. This feature alone makes this a great camera at a great price. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone who is amateur to intermediate as it makes advancing your skills much easier.

70D on its first day

I got a call the 70D had arrived and picked it up at 10:00 AM when the store opened. I purchased the 70D to use it as a video backup to my 5D Mark III, which is probably one of the best cameras available today, for my money.
The 70D while in live mode for video continues to focus and the video looks excellent. I had been using a 60D for video while I take stills with the 5D.
I enjoy the light weight of the 70D, which is about the same as the 60D camera I had been using for video. I tried my 50mm 1.2 lens first and the pictures were super sharp. My next test was with a 24-105MM L series and it seems to like that lens OK, but I am not sure they are as sharp as the 50mm 1.2 lens. I did several test shots outside today and compared them to the 60D which I took along for the testing. The two cameras are about equal in quality for shots set up for equal settings. That is good since the 60D has taken some excellent pictures for me in the past year.
The 70D has HDR which is nice for landscape pictures but it will take some time to find and use all if not most of the features. It certainly has a lot of features and it will be a challenge to learn or use them all.
Overall, I am pleased with the new camera.
Pros: good battery life, Lightweight/Portable, easy to use
I would recommend this to a friend!

Video Autofocus is Amazing

I do photography and videography for HS Sports Teams and purchased this four days ago to replace my failing Canon GL1. Within one hour I was shooting a Football game and was absolutely astounded to its accuracy and responsiveness shooting video.
With literally no practice time, I was able to quickly nail down some pretty incredible footage compared to what I would have gotten with my GL1.
This technology is amazing and is worth every penny.
Pros: quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: needs the ability to lock out touch screen

Upgrade from the Canon Rebel 3ti. Huge improvements. I didn't think I would use the touch screen but I just love it for FAST changes to f stop or ISO without pushing buttons and wheel. Very good feel to hand with a solid grip. Not much heavier than the Rebel but a more solid feel. This camera has tons of features over the rebel and worth every penny (dollar) difference especially if you already have a collection of EF or EF-S lenses. I have had this for four months and have taken probably 4000 images (went on two photo workshops) I took both the 70D and the Rebel thinking I could swap between each fitted wioth different lenses. I ended up using the 70D almost exclusively as it felt more secure, more features, touch screen, level.
Pros: solid feel, better balance with large zoom lens, touch screen, many features, excellent images
Cons: none so far

New EOS 70D does not disappoint!

Got this camera for Christmas and have already shot over 350 photos in five days. I am upgrading from a Canon SX40 superzoom which I have used to take thousands of photos. The 70D is my first DSLR, and I love it! The camera has a nice sturdy feel in my hands but doesn't feel any heavier than my SX40. It will take me a while to become familiar with all the controls and settings, but I've been totally impressed with the results just with using mainly the auto settings. The touch screen provides easy access to settings and being able to touch the screen on the point on which you want to focus and have it take the photo is so easy. Menu and other controls seem well-located and easy to use.
The wifi function is a great feature. I downloaded the EOS app onto my iPhone and in a matter of minutes had synced the camera and phone. I love that you can review your photos right on your phone and even operate the camera remotely. I also used the app on my iPad with equal success. The camera sends out it's own wifi signal to create a network for the phone to connect to, so you could make a connection anywhere. I love photographing the many birds around our home and can't wait to set up my tripod and camera and be able to remotely take photos.
I've also taken several photos in low light with the flash turned off, and the results have been really good.
Can't wait to explore more of what I can do with this camera! I am definitely loving it so far!
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

Love this camera

I really love this camera. The dual pixel sensor is great for focusing in live view. Combined with the STM lenses and touch screen its just a very satisfying combination. I actually like using this camera to record movies over my dedicated camcorder now. Something about touching the screen and being able to precisely focus where I want is very intuitive. I didn't even buy the camera for its video capabilities, now I'm addicted. The photos from this camera are amazing. I never thought I'd ever shoot at high ISOs now I'm getting some nice keepers at 6400, and with some PP even 12000 ISO. I really like the focusing system, it's fast and accurate. I've been able to freeze motion and get some really great bird in flight pictures with it. Build quality is awesome, very sturdy but light. I love the ergonomics of this camera. My previous camera was a rebel T3i. While its a great camera it felt a little small in the hands, the 70D feels perfect. Battery life is great too. Depending how I use it, I can get 800-1200 shots on a single charge. Very satisfied with this purchase.

Amazing!

I just received this cameras and used it for the first time at my son's wrestling tournament. The photos are so clear and the speed awesome. This was an upgrade for me from the rebel t3i which I like a lot but no comparison to the 70d. I am so happy I decided to upgrade. Photography is my hobby and canon is so easy to work. I have used canon for several years and love it.
