Rock Band 2 is one of the best music games out there for sure. This is the BEST party game out there for sure, because whether you are good at this or not, your going to have a great time with a group of friends who just want to goof around.
What's great about it: Perfect at parties
What's not so great: Sometimes the notes can get anoying cause they are so thin

I started playing games like this about 3 months before RB2 launched. I purchased RB1 and loved it. The day RB2 launched I purchased it. I also picked up GH:WT when it launched but RB has won me over.
I have been able to climb my way from playing guitar on medium all the way to tier 7 expert and have loved every minute of it. The DLC is great. They are always updating the content and with nearly 1000 songs to choose from you're sure to find what you're looking for.
The "No Fail" option makes this great for parties, young children or adults who are not familiar with gaming. You really feel like you are playing the song!
The Tour option allows you to tour the world and play various genres of music throughout the in-game world. You unlock venues, buses, planes and stage hands along the way.
Simply put, If you love music you'll love the game.
What's great about it: Well implemented. The music simulation is as good as it gets. Absolutely great for parties and players of all ages.
What's not so great: Figuring out how to play online with friends isn't exactly intuitive, but once you figure it out it's not so bad.

Rock Band 2 is great. tons of people have it so if you don't you should probably go pick it up. It is hours of fun for a low price. Get it at Best buy though if you are going to get it. They have the best selection for the controllers like the drums or the guitar. I think, in my opinion, that Rock Band 2 is better than gh 5. Guitar Hero 5, I think, has a worse song selection. Although on gh 5 you can put songs on from ghwt for only 250 points. If you are looking for a good all around game though, Rock Band 2 is your game!
What's great about it: songs, variety
What's not so great: could have more difficult songs I guess.

Compared to Guitar Hero 5, the arrangements on many tracks are very simplistic and don't have quite as true a feel of "playing" the tune. Also, the character generator is at once not as detailed and clunkier to use, and it is especially frustrating that Xbox Avatars are not supported. There are some very good songs in this, just the same, and it *is* fun to play... but I like GH 5 better on just about every front.
What's great about it: Some excellent songs
What's not so great: Music arrangements too simple, character generator clunky, no Xbox avatar support
