It uses a wall adapter as the power source, and it does not give you the option to plug the charging unit to a USB port.

You are getting a much more effective, faster charging system for highly used PS3 controllers. It does not involve USB cords and the controllers plug in easily and turn on a green glowing light when fully charged. Highly recommended!

looks great

I might have gotten the only unit that has a problem. I love the way this charger looks. It went great with our decor in the house so i was able to have it sitting out on the shelf. plugged the unit in, and it worked great, it charged my controllers for an hour and they were at full strength. next time came around to charge them...and it wont charge them anymore. The red light comes on for exactly 4 seconds, then the green: good to go light comes on. even though the controller is still completely dead. unit will continue to do this, even after i charge the controller using the PS3 for a bit. So needless to say, i am returning the item in the morning.
What's great about it: looks great
What's not so great: i got the defective unit in the bunch

Hard to mount controllers

This charger looks good and makes more sense from a design standpoint than most. However my kids and even the adults in the house have had difficulty attaching the controllers. I am uncertain if that issue or another has caused the unit to fail, but after maybe a year of use the unit will no longer make contact with the controllers to charge.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
