Every Hobbyist Should Own

The EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM lens meets all the must-have attributes, and throws in a few bonuses, too.
Being a poorly-funded hobbyist, this was the third lens I purchased (after 18-55 and 55-250mm kit lenses). I'm currently using a T6i body, which the 24mm compliments well. The wider focal length and the wider aperture both aid my style of photography, which tends to be people indoors, often boudoir or erotic. I do wish that it had image stabilization which would help with video. Regarding video, the focal length on a crop sensor is good for use on a tripod capturing an entire room, but handheld is still too tight for selfie or closeup recording. A kit lens at 18mm does better, provided the lighting is adequate. For landscape images, the 24mm does well enough, but for that I don't really need a lens that fast, so I lean towards the 10-18mm ultra-wide zoom, despite its maximum aperture being 4.5. As most agree, cost-to-value on this lens is incredible, much like its older sister the 40mm pancake. I do feel like the 24mm has somehow managed to have the STM system improved over the 40. Both are good pancake lenses. Many talk about this being the best "walk-around" lens for a crop sensor body. I'll admit that it's easier to haul around, but it's only 80-something grams lighter than an 18-55mm kit lens, which could be better as a "walk-around" lens, aside from the wider aperture the 24mm offers. Personally, I've found myself leaving the 18-135 nano USM on my camera body most of the time, due to it's greater versatility.
I really do love what the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM lens can do for me, but even more so, I appreciate what it makes me do. Being a fixed focal length, it forces me to see things a little differently, and certainly gets me to zoom with my feet. With 24mm not being particularly flattering to most humans, it makes me get a little more creative with how I shoot, but always gives me a good chance at getting great images with it.
Overall, I'd stay this should be one of the first prime lens you purchase, along with the latest "nifty fifty".

Great lens! Sharp, fast and light. Probably one of the best lenses in my bag. Works perfect on a 70d. quiet and accurate with focusing during video. Fast and accurate focusing on stills.

This lens is great! Solid construction (metal attatchment), small and extremely light. The f/2.8 produces some fantastic images up close and the slight wide angle is great for portraits or landscape shots. Since it's a prime lens, you must zoom with your feet but the AF is good and dependable. Great lens, my only complaint is that f/22 is a little smaller than I wanted for some different long exposure stuff, but overall great lens!

WOW - great simple little lens for learning and teaching photography - I just started using use it with an old Rebel T4, and it like makes it into a new professional camera again! Light-weight, affordable, sharp, with great definition (even tough condition like at 1/60, ISO100, f2.8 indoors on my moving children - came out beautifully!) Outdoor photos were surprising mediocre - on a sunny day a lot seemed overexposed and washed out--that may just be my mistake on camera settings though...

got this specifically to take workout videos. once i figured out all the settings, it works like a charm. only con is it films in wide screen, so i can see on the camera a full screen, but some of that is cut off
