We had already watched the Wire, all 5 seasons. We were already loyal fans. My husband is a 35 year veteran in law enforcement and he would always comment on how realistic the actors are. We fell like we know Bulk, Lester and the rest of them personally. The acting is outstanding, Having this 5 peice set allows us to watch it anytime we want. The only problem is we can't stop watching it. We start off watching a disc with the intention of watching one episode and end up watching the entire disc with 3-4 episodes on it. Puts me way behind in my housework. This box set is a must have for The Wire lovers and anyone who who enjoy's a well written well acted drama.
What's great about it: Everything but the price!!!!!!
What's not so great: The Price is too high!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would recommend this to a friend!

"The Wire" is hands-down the best television show ever made. Unlike other shows where the plot resolves itself within an hour, "The Wire" offers one story, told over the course of 5 seasons, focusing on the drug trade in Baltimore. But this show is more than a police procedural; it develops characters, poses tough questions, and consistently defies the viewer's assumptions. There are not enough superlatives for the quality of this show. The show does make a lot of demands on the viewer. This isn't something to watch while you're folding laundry or cooking dinner. You have to really pay attention, since characters who appear briefly in one show may not appear again for several shows (or even entire seasons) later. But it all fits, and it is all amazing.
The packaging leaves much to be desired, and is the only reason I can't give this 5 stars across the board. The discs are inserted into cardboard sleeves and can be easily damaged. I bought some plastic keep cases to house my collection, since this one is really a keeper.
It's been said that there are two kinds of people in the world: those who love "The Wire" and those who've never seen "The Wire." How this series didn't win every award imaginable is just baffling. If you like quality, adult drama (caution: rough language, violence and adult situations), this show is for you. Indeed.
What's great about it: Excellent price for a certified classic
What's not so great: Lousy packaging

So good, it could be a documentary.

Simply put: This is the street game from almost every angle - unfiltered and unapologetic. There's no good and bad here (and if it were, it would be hard to choose sides). It's just art imitating life. The most interesting thing it shows is that no matter who you are, working in whichever profession, there's always a conflict of modesty vs greed, integrity vs corruption, and purpose vs. indifference. I think the last one is the most interesting...
Purpose drives many of the characters while others act hopelessly indifferent as if they are sheep that must remain with the flock. And just to clarify: the "sheep" mentality is not only in the street game, but is in every other angle this story is told from as well.
"Two Thumbs Up!"
What's great about it: Complete collection, uncut.
What's not so great: Never shot in HD. Too bad.

This is the best TV show of all time. The acting is incredible and the plots are brilliant. You'll never get sick watching this show.

I don't believe in buying movie or TV show DVD's, too easy to just rent them. That being said, The Wire is the only series I have ever purchased.
When the show was on HBO, it never got the publicity it deserved. There was never any fanfare like what surrounded The Sopranos. IMO The Sopranos doesn't even come close to The Wire.
If you haven't watched The Wire before, you might want to buy the season 1 DVD first. In my experience people either love The Wire or hate it. If you love it, you will devour the season 1 disk and be begging for more.
Be forewarned, the story is engrossing, but it is also profane and graphic.
What's great about it: Every episode
What's not so great: Nothing
I would recommend this to a friend!
