What's great about it: Pop melodies, Hip Hop beats, Positive Energy, African percussion, Vocal harmonies
Animal Collective is:
Avey Tare (Dave Portner)
Panda Bear (Noah Lennox)
Geologist (Brian Weitz)
Deakin (Josh Dibb) Not present on the album.
This lovable band of young musical geniuses or Animal Collective as they call themselves have yet to disappoint me. They are widely misconceived as "freaks", "weirdos", "druggies", and "hippies". In reality, they are just like you and me, except that they have a knack for constructing poppy masterpieces and are underpaid and rarely marketed to do so. They are the only band with an entire discography that I can stomach, and stomach it so comfortably that it could be all I listen to for almost immeasurable amounts of time.
This album is arguably their best, whether you are speaking musically or specifically of the quality of recording. They spent 2 years perfecting most of these songs by performing them live and it really shows. If you had any difficulty getting into their music before, here is a good place as any to start. The album will take you on a breezy boat ride through more scenery than you can imagine yourself imagining. Halfway through you'll find yourself in a well-lit yet unfamiliar lagoon, and as you are swept over hills and turns, occasionally looking off to the grassy mounds beyond you, you can't help but look up at the night sky and smile as the wind ruffles through your hair and you feel just for a moment that all is right in the world.
