Great Camera, hard to use
on November 1, 2009

I have had the HF200 for just under 6 months, taking video has been fairly easy, but the record button is on the wrong side of the camera for my right thumb to hit it easily.
The position of zoom button is also awkward on the top of the camera.
The real problem is with the software that is required to get the videos off of the camera. It is hidden in very obtuse programs with names that do not match function.
It seems to me that the quality of the camera should be matched with the software.
Pros: Compact Design, excellent image quality, Accurate, Vivid Colors, good battery life, Great sound/audio, durable
Cons: Uncomfortable to hold, Difficult to use, Limited Software Compatibility
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

The camera is compact and fairly easy to use. The software however is NOT intuitive. I cannot transfer from camera to computer. From other reviews, it appears I am not alone.
Pros: good battery life, Compact Design, excellent image quality, Ergonomic/comfortable to hold
Cons: Difficult Computer Connectivity, Limited Software Compatibility
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Love the quality, small size and speed of the Vixi HF 200. It produces the clearest picture of any camera I have used. I do not like the manuel. To me it is very hard to understand.
Pros: good battery life, Easy Computer Connectivity, Great sound/audio, Accurate, Vivid Colors, Compact Design, excellent image quality, Easy TV Connectivity
Cons: Poor Low-Light Performance, Difficult to use, need better instructions
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great Camera, Bad Software

Its great. Sound quality not great. But I use and external mic anyway. This camera is great for everything that you need it for. That is unless your using a Mac. If you import the files using a Mac, for me you have to render them threw iMovie than edit them on "After FX" or "Premier". Unless you have Final Cut which I don't use as much. Also to connect it to the computer you have to plug in the USB AND the AC power cord? Seems uselss to me.
Pros: good battery life, Compact Design, excellent image quality, easy to use
Cons: Difficult Computer Connectivity, hard to convert
I would recommend this to a friend!

Poor Transfer Software

I consider myself a person of above-average intelligence. But I find all things about this machine's technical manual beyond comprehension.
There is no straight-forward illustrated way to transfer images from the video recorder to one's computer.
The choice of Pixela's Image Mixer is beyond ease of use.
Despite reading through a 100+ page technical user manual, all I learned was that I needed to consult with the PDFs contained in the Pixela software (BTW there are none on the CD-rom or the Pixela website).
Further reading indicated that all one needed to do was load the software onto the computer and then attach the video recorder whoch would then "automatically" launch the dialog box for saving/transferring images. If "automatic" means THREE PLUS hours, then I missed the definition in English class.
Ideally, the process will be repeatable. All I know is that despite TWO USERS with MASTERS DEGREES reading and taking the words from the technical manual at face value, we have not found ANY WAY to repeat the transfer process which we STUMBLED ON by ACCIDENT (unless Accident means automatic in the technical manual).
THANK GOD I DID NOT GET THIS UNIT ON A HOLIDAY.
Is this a Canon issue? Yes, because they chose PIXELA.
Cons: poor technical user manual

Bad Design Evgineering

This is basically a good camera but has poor low light capability and must be set to manual in low light. The worst part of the camera is the Tripod placement. In other models it was in the center behind the lens. Well some poor engineer from canon decided to put it close to the battery on the grip side in the center of the grip side. Almost all camcorder hand held brackets are to the left lcd door side. Placing the tripod holes on the opposite side guarantees the lcd door wont be able to open and and under mounted acessory light bracket is in the middle of the camera, interferiing with the grip . In the older models the tripod hole was behind the lens dead center, so a light bar or acessory bar was forward and wouldnt interfere with your hand. See DM lens acessory lens brackets. I havent tried to remove a battery while it is on the tripod to see if it interferes with removel.
Pros: Compact Design, Easy TV Connectivity, Easy Computer Connectivity, Accurate, Vivid Colors, durable, easy to use, good daylight video
Cons: Short battery life, Poor sound/audio, Limited Software Compatibility, Poor Low-Light Performance, poor tripod hole placement for acessory brackets, tripod in the way of battery release
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

When buying an expensive VIDEO camera like this one, you would expect that you could download the video as well as the still images, right?
Still images are FABULOUS, yet I cannot download any of my video.
Very frustrated!
Pros: good battery life, Great sound/audio, Accurate, Vivid Colors, Compact Design, excellent image quality, Ergonomic/comfortable to hold, Easy TV Connectivity
Cons: Difficult to use, Limited Software Compatibility, no video download available for mac
