The HP ink clearly outperforms the alternative off-brands, but the costs continue to go up and up. A set of ink cartridges now costs as much as I paid for the printer.

Hi Brian,
I am sorry that this happened to you, but it is unlikely to have been the fault of all the cartridges themselves. What is more likely is that the contacts inside the printer got dirty and need to be cleaned.
That is pretty easy to do. You use some lint-free material to wipe off the copper-colored contacts that match up with the contacts on the cartridge (wouldn't hurt to clean the contacts on the cartridges too and examine them for damage).
If that doesn't help, perhaps the cartridges were damaged or defective and you can return them. The return and exchange process is covered, step-by-step, at:
