Instead of tacking the unit to the windshield, I elected to have a unit that I could move with ease that "adheres" to the dash but something that won't "stick" to it.
This unit holds the GPS steady while the car is moving and even after going over some rough road. It is, however, a bit bulky and you do NOT want to pick it up solely by the plastic arm.

This is my second time buying the same product, and it still is just great!
I am in rental cars all the time, in locations all over the country. I depend on my GPS, but do not like trying to attach it to the rental car windshields. Instead this base works great.
It is not cheap, and is a bit heavy (which is why it works so well-it's stable) but very worthwhile.
