honest review...what DOESN'T work...

Ok, I bought this to replace my Epson R260. It seems to work fine in all aspects EXCEPT for the DVD/CD printing feature. I spent a very long time trying to get the DVD/CD printing tray to position itself in the slot correctly in order to use the DVD/CD insert, BUT...it will not seat itself No matter what I do it still gives me those flashing red lights indicating that it isn't in place. I really did follow the directions carefully but...it looks like the one main reason for buying this model will escape me and not work. Any suggestions, anyone?

Hit and miss

Bought the Artisan 50 primarily for its CD/DVD direct printing capabilities. This is where the hit or miss comes in you are not always guaranteed to get a good copy every time, there have been some good, some alright, and still some that are totally messed up. Being that you are printing directly to the disc this can be a costly problem. Also the printer seems to go through a lot of ink, printed about ten discs and two of the ink cartridges were near empty. Of the 10 printed 2 were good, 4 were alright, 2 were at least legible, and 2 were coasters. I also tried to print to CD/DVD labels not much better results there. The Print quality in the normal function is acceptable, but I have seen better on printers that cost a lot less and are a lot cheaper to maintain.

Printing DVDs

I purchased the printer primarily for printing labels directy on DVDs and CDs. The results - easy to set up, easy to use and pleasing results with the included DVD design / print software package. One quirk - the printer doesn't always immediately recognize when set up in DVD print mode - error message displayed even after appropriately adjusting the position of the front tray. I can only resolve this by turning the printer off, restarting it and printing a page of text before setting up the DVD print mode. So far, this resolves the problem.

second lemon! avoid this model

It might be just lousy luck, but even though Epson replaced my first Artisan 50, the second wasn't any better at basic printing. Photographs on both #1 and #2 printed with glitches--thin line-like gaps every inch or so. Well, I don't print photos that often, mostly just documents. But even them! Blotches of black ink often appear on the corners of perfectly smooth sheets of paper and I have to re-print.
I'd asked Epson what model replaced my former printer, the Epson Stylus Photo 900, and they said this one. The old printer did everything well, but this one, nothing! I like the faster pace and dust cover, but print quality itself has taken a nose dive. Pay more and get a better model, I say, or just trust to luck on this model.

Hmmm???

We bought a new Artisan 50 for our church because our other Epson wasn't working properly. The sole purpose of buying this printer was to print CDs. There was a problem with the new printer right out of the box. It jammed up and I couldn't even get the ink cartidges installed. So I called tech support. They were absolutely no help at all. It was obvious that English was not her first language and most of her responses (which she repeated several times) were right from her script. Finally, our custodian at church helped. It would print paper fine, but not the CDs (again, the sole purpose we bought that specific model of printer.)

Artisan 50

I started out with and Epson R280 many years ago and I printed a lot of CDs and DVDs (thousands) and many HI Quality photos and the only reason it failed is because I spilled a noxious liquid into it and trashed the electronics. In looking for a worthy replacement, I found the Aritisan 50 is the replacement for the R280. I bought the 50 and was very pleased that it had the same specs and the actual output was every bit as good. Sometimes when a new model replaces an older one the quality suffers a bit. NOT in this case. I was surprised how accurate it was out of the box, of course it an Epson, so I should have expected as much. I was also able to print a 8 1/2 X 44 inch picture with it which seemed like a bonus. Great panorama printer.
I crunch a lot of documentary videos onto DVD so this printer is a very important tool. Its colors are truely vibrant on paper and printable DVDs. I will start using the water resistant DVDs in the future though. The photos from this printer rival anything I have gotten from a lab. And don't even try talk to me about the competition. I have used them and in my opinion, give me the 50.

SOME SMUDGES
on December 28, 2012

I have owned the Artisan 50 for about 8 months. Lately, when printing photos, and especially on envelopes, there is sometimes "smudging" on the edges of the photo and along the sides of the envelopes. I was told the problem is the "sponges" (that collect extra sprayed ink) get saturated over time, and leak. The sponges cannot be replaced. So the printer has to be replaced. Not too good.

So far, so good

I bought the Artisan 50 primarily for printing CD/DVD labels, so I did not need the bells and whistles of an All-in One - besides, I have an All-in One from another company:(.
I printed my first BEAUTIFUL label about 15 minutes after I opened the box.
Since I will be printing mostly CD/DVD labels, I left the tray in position and I turned off the printer, ready for the next one. About 2 days later, tried to print another label. I kept getting an upper tray error and 2 flashing lights. I took the paper tray out and put it in the lower position and the error went away. When I re-positioned it to print the label, the error message came back.
Finally, I figured out that if I closed the front cover, it somehow reset the printer and it worked GREAT!
I hope this will help others who may be having a similar problem. It seems as though closing the front cover has a magic button that fixes certain errors.
As others have posted, Epson is a little lacking in their documentation, but with my knowledge of computers and peripherals, it is not a big problem for me.
