Great deal for your money!

I've used Epson inkjet printers for many years and have always enjoyed the high quality of the product. As a professional photographer, I'm looking for a printer that renders exceptional quality and that can reproduce my images to my standards. Since the Epson Photo Stylus R800 was my primary photo printer, and is no longer available, I decided to give the Epson Artisan 50 printer a try. I wanted to see if all the boasting about quality really was true.
After using the Epson Artisan 50 printer for a couple days, and picking the best settings to use in Adobe Photoshop and Apple's Pages, I wasted little ink and paper to come up with exceptional quality images. The Artisan 50 excelled beyond what I had expected. And since I calibrate my monitor, my prints are greatly accurate, rendering images so close to what I see.
Color accuracy, tonal range, sharpness in detail, tonal separation, ink drying time, these qualities hit the mark!
Epson has done an great job with this printer.
The next thing is to see how long the ink cartridges last. Perhaps my next purchase will be the large capacity #77 inks.

Defective Printer

The Epson Artisan I had made just about every mistake a photo printer can make. I was surprised that it ever left the factory!
I finally gave up tweaking and fussing and sent it back for a refund.

Constantly have to clean print heads

I've had this printer for about a year now. I print a couple times a week and I've noticed that every time I have I print I have to clean the print heads and do all kinds of maintenance steps in order to get a decent print with accurate colors. Pretty inconvenient and annoying. I will be buying a new printer soon.

God help you if you print discs

It works fine if you print on paper. If you have to print onto inkjet printable DVD's, good luck.
The first disc prints fine but the second disc the printer spits out the tray and won't print. To get the 2nd and more discs to print you have to remove the disc tray and holder, power down the printer anad wait for the lights to stop blinking and reinstall the tray. It takes and agonizing 5 minutes to get the 2nd disc to print. This happens EVERY time you have to print more than one disc. Reloading the software didnt fix the problem.

Artisan 50

The first time we printed a full bleed 8.5 x 11 proof of our product literature our jaws dropped at the quality of the images and the look of the piece. We now use the Artisan 50 to print all our product literature on "brochure" paper and even our customers make remarks about the quality of the work our "printing company" does with our literature. We print only what we need and now we can even customize the literature for each show, event or even customer.
We picked the Artisan 50 because it has no frills and does one job, printing. This little gem has printed at least 5k pages saved us thousands of dollars.

Seems flawed

I use the Artisan 50 primarily for DVD labels although I also use it occasionally to print the color inserts and covers for DVD cases. I have had two units. The first one lasted a little more than a year and I figured I just got a lemon and the next one would be better. It has lasted longer, but some of the same problems are recurring which preceded the final breakdown of the first unit: When the ink needs to be replaced, all kinds of lights start flashing, not necessarily the ones described in the trouble-shooting guide and the unit does not always respond correctly to the button-pushing sequence given in the instruction manual, making it difficult, nerve wracking and time-consuming. I will not buy this unit again if I can find another DVD label printing machine. It seems flawed in basic design and/or software.
