What's great about it: All components now have steady streaming capability.
What's not so great: Probably shoulda got 6 ports instead of 4..
The DirectTv HD DVR never worked with our wireless home network before, in 6 years. 2 different techs came out and fiddled with it, eventually blamed our router signal (wrong) and the bad phonelines in our court (maybe). Now all works as we're being charged for; OnDemand, special features, etc. The ethernet connection was the key.

What's great about it: Ease of use/setup. Internet speed.
What's not so great: Price.
Had an issue with my iPad 2 staying connected to my home WiFi network. Seemed to be a pretty common issue online but there was no answer to the problem, just a bunch of suggestions which none worked. I was so aggravated! I really stopped using the iPad for a while because of that.
I realized I had a lot of things connected to my network via WiFi (xbox, tivo, pc, lap tops, apple tv, etc) so as an experiment to relieve some of the load on the WiFi network I decided to give this a try. Problem fixed! My iPad 2 & now 3 work perfectly.
Plug and play, setup took 2 mins. No software needed. Make sure both devices are directly connected to the outlet on the wall and not a power strip.
Unexpectedly my internet speeds are just as fast as if I was directly connected to the router. I have the router set up one room away, however everything except my Apple products are now connected via cable and work great! Very happy so far! If anything changes I'll be sure to update!
**Make sure your router and this device is connected to the same electric circuit in your home/office.**

What's great about it: Installation
What's not so great: Speed Assurance
I can see how this would work with Normal people's wishes. Stream movies and shows works great however I have a Media Center PC with a SiliconDust HD PRIME homerun TV Tuner. While it streamed fine and everything was great until I started to access the other 2 tuners into recording stages. It started to garble and junkle. Needless to say, I tried 3 different outlets so i know its not my wiring. It just demands more than 20-50mbs or even 80mbs I'm guessing. While i can see it handling something like Xbox or anytype of gaming it doesnt handle HTPC on the higher end. For $99 I can wire my whole house with a nice switch and hub action with GIgabit.

What's great about it: Easy setup.
What's not so great: Not great if you have aluminum wiring in the house.
I was a little concerned about getting this for my Tivo/BluRay connections, but it seems to be working OK. I can watch a movie from Netflix in HD on my Tivo box over this connection.
My main concern is that my house has aluminum wiring and this is a known limitation of the technology. I still get a decent speed but it does vary from 50 to 20 Mbps depending on what is turned on in the house. I would expect it to work a lot better over copper.

What's great about it: It does exactly what it says it does.
What's not so great: My ethernet cables were kind of jammed into the packaging, which isn't really how ethernet cables should be cared for.
It does exactly what it says it's supposed to do -- provide hardwired internet access anywhere there is an outlet in the house. I have Verizon Fios internet located in a less desirable location in my house (Verizon's wise decision to put it there), but with Netgear's Powerline AV-500 amd 4-port my problems with weak wireless signal are gone now that I can hardwire my devices in. I have the Playstation 3 plugged into the first port, Apple TV plugged into the second port, and my MacBook Pro plugged into the third port -- and they all work great! It's very rare I'll get any signal drop and if I do I usually reset my Verizon Fios router and that solves the problem, but that happens maybe once every 4-5 months.. not Netgear's fault.

What's great about it: Fast, with no interference
What's not so great: Everything's great.
Rather than do wall damage and drag another cable and/or have multiple dongles, we went this route for a new home theater installation. Works exactly as promised with exceptional speed and no RFI. Geek Squad suggestion was excellent, as usual.

What's great about it: It Just Works!
What's not so great: Price Is Significantly Higher Than Competing Products!
These are Ethernet network extenders that plug into your electrical outlets. It really doesn't get any better than that. The white box is an adapter that is meant to be connected to your existing router via Ethernet cable and the black box is a switch that is intended to be used in your home theater/TV area for connecting a network-capable Blu-Ray player, Smart TV, media player, or game console. They support encryption, so if you are paranoid, you can set that up to keep anyone from plugging into your network via your home wiring.
The only problem you will likely ever have is with line noise or wiring that is not up to spec but that is a pretty rare thing. You may find that you have to move the adapter or switch around to find a suitable socket that works as they can vary radically from one to the next but the products will generally work well even in wiring that isn't too great. I own a bunch of these and my entire home network is comprised of these so I can wholeheartedly recommend them though you can find equivalent products that are significantly less expensive from other network equipment makers.

What's great about it: Great speeds, easy install.
What's not so great: No cons so far.
Does what it says, is easy to install. I replaced a wireless connection in my far bedroom with this, and I went from a very shaky <10mb/s wireless to almost 30mb/s using this product. I wish I had known about this before I bought all the wireless gear. I highly recommend this.

What's great about it: Easy set up
What's not so great: Nothing
Set up was easy. I am sending data about 40 ft. from one end of my home to the other end on the same level. Electrical outlets are on the same side of the circuit breaker box which helps. I have used with Netflix movies with not problem.

My problem- my computer and router are downstairs, my home theater upstairs. How to connect my satellite receiver/DVR, BluRay, etc. to the internet? The solution, as per the Geek Squad folks at my local store- a Netgear Powerline Ethernet Adapter. It allows me to use my home electrical wiring to bring the LAN outlets upstairs, where a connection can be made for up to 4 components. Worked like a charm first time, easy to set up, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Unobtrusive but works great!

What's great about it: Easy to set-up and get going
What's not so great: had some problems with the system being or staying up
Our house could not have support wired connections to all various electronic devices (TV, BluRay, computers, DIRECTV) so this allowed me to get a wire to the areas I needed so buying wireless devices for each device was not needed

What's great about it: Truely plug and play, easy to setup and extend
What's not so great: Price, if you only need the 4-port unit
I have used the Netgear Powerline adapters for a few years to get network from my study, which is upstairs, to my entertainment center, which is downstairs. When Netgear came out with this kit that has an actual desktop switch, I converted to it and moved the kit with two wall plug-ins to my church to provide Internet to our sanctuary computer which kept losing the Belkin USB wireless setup. Everything works like a charm right out of the box. I did find that you only need one of the primary units (the one that connects to your router or primary switch) and then any number of the 4-port adapters can be used. We have now extended my church setup to 3 locations and I am getting ready to add an additional one at home for my computer workshop in the garage. I highly recommend these devices!!

What's great about it: its as fast or faser than a wire
What's not so great: the connection may slow down a little once and awhile but never enough to slow down the connection
what i love about this item is that i can monitor and control it for my computer. I have the part that puts the internet in the study and the part that receives the internet in my room. in my room i have it hocked up to another router and my xbox 360. the connection is never bad and it never fails me. i needed a connection at my dining room table and all i did is took it from my room and plugged it in down stares and had an amazing connection. i love how i can add any thing to the system because the plug puts internet into the power of the house can have any thing added to it. i love this system and all netgear products.

What's great about it: Easy setup, works well, very reliable, and has 4 ports (XBOX, TV, DVR, BluRay, etc...)
What's not so great: The source unit plugs directly into the wall and seems a little loose.
I've tried a number of wireless technologies to bring network connectivitiy from my office which is up stairs at one end of the house to the entertainment center downstairs at the other end of the house and none of them have been reliable. This powerline adapter works extremely well for me. Even HD video (Zune, Amazon, Netflix) has been able to go through this device. Gaming online (XBOX) has been perfectly reliable as well.
Can't believe how much money and time was wasted on wireless when this just plugged in and worked. The "secure" option setup easily as well. If you're like me and thinking this won't work well enough or trying to make wireless work - trust me - this is a great solution - stop wasting your time! Of course, if you could run network cabling it would be better but then you probably wouldn't be looking at this type of device.

This product interferes with DSL service and in fact caused my modem to stop working. The modem had to be replaced by Verizon and I will be returning the Netgear Powerline product.
