Have taken several hundred photos and am still getting familiar with various settings and their effect on resulting photos. Combinations and permutations are numerous and I'm still experimenting. One nice result:taking a long distance scenery photo at max zoom results in very good sharpness, even when magnified to a large degree. All in all, although I'm still learning, I'm very pleased with the camera. Perhaps a step by step training manual would be useful--any suggestions?
Pros: Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, good battery life
I would recommend this to a friend!

Just What I Wanted

Wow. The Canon PowerShot SX200 IS is quite a camera. I wanted SLR-like Manual features in a sleek and compact package, and this turned out to be the camera for me. The Image Quality is superb, and the lens is fantastic! I would recommend this camera to anyone who wants manual settings in a small package.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, good battery life, durable
Cons: Heavy/Bulky, mediocre low-light performance
I would recommend this to a friend!

Video not Windows friendly

After using a pair of A650s for the last few months to shoot videos of bands for YouTube, I decided to get a pair of these because they shoot 720p HD. They do that nicely but I'm EXTREMELY annoyed that Canon decided to use the MOV format, which Windows Movie Maker and Media Player do not work with. I see that a lot of people are using time-consuming and image-degrading conversion programs to get a usable format. What's the point of having a nice HD camera if you have to degrade the image to get a usable format? I've found some freeware called mp4cam2avi that will move the h.264 into an AVI file -- which Canon should have done in the first place! -- without any loss of quality, and with the freeware ffdshow h.264 codec installed, WMM and WMP can use the files. Only problem is mp4cam2avi will only work with files up to 2 GB -- about 11 minutes -- but the SX200 will shoot up to 4 GB.
These SX200s are nice, but I already had a pair of 12 MP A650s and an XTi for photography, and I got these specifically for the HD video. I love the photos all my Canons shoot, but using the MOV format for the video was an extremely bad decision, since most of the world runs Windows. I suppose part of the blame for this should go to Microsoft for deliberately not supporting MOV because it's an Apple format, but surely the Canon engineers knew that?
Pros: excellent image quality
Cons: mov video not windows friendly

Best camera I've bought so far

I have noticed that a lot of people are commenting on the fact that the movie mode does not have optical zoom. What I have come to figure out is that if you zoom in before you start shooting video you can reach the full 12X zoom and then digitally zoom some more during shooting. Unfortunately, however, it does not look like you can zoom optically during shooting. All in all, I love this camera.
Pros: easy to use, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, great zoom

Took over 2,500 pictures during a cruise
on December 21, 2009

Bought the camera about one week before I went on a 28 day Mediterranean Sea cruise, so I did not have much time to play with it and learn how it works. However, even with my limited knowledge of the camera once I started using it heavily I found it very easy to work and change settings. A recommendation is that additional batteries be bought since they last only about one day if you are taking many pictures. I bought two extra batteries at a reasonable price and found the purchase well worth the price. Since I charged them every night I never ran out of power. I aslo bought two additional 4GB chips to store all the pictures without having to unload them specially since I did not have a computer with me. Two challenges. Tthe flash for some reason or another did not come up or went down, however, this fixed itself. The other challenge was that I relied too much on the image stabilizer and got some blurred pictures. I found I needed to take my time with some of the settings. I have yet to try the manual settings to get controlled pictures. Expect that I will do it soon. When I do it I will write up what I experiences. The 12X feature was excellent for taking shots of the island fortifications from the ship.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Short battery life

I purchased this camera while on vacation when my other Canon finely gave out, intermitently. The features on this camera are great for people that want to take great photos with ease. The camera is small and powerful with the 12 X optical zoom. The settings for great pictures are also great. Purchase this camera, you will love it.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable, great zoom power
