Powershot 200 IS is awesome

After doing diligent research is preparation to replace our current digital point-and-shoot camera, my wife decided to get me the Canon Powershot SX200 IS for Christmas 2009. So far it has exceeded our expectation in all areas. It more than lived up to its status as one of the top 10 products of 2009. We are able to take GREAT pictures of our neice's school musical without flash that would never have come out with our previous camera. We love the weight and feel of the camera, and the charging station is great too! So far we love this camera.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
I would recommend this to a friend!

Love my Cacon

I purchased my current camera to replace a lost one and it has been fabulous! I photograph our day care children - 6 weeks to almost 4 years to make albums for each child. The parents are thrilled with the record of their child's year. The canon photos are clear, great color and I can be across the room and still get good results.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

Huge upgrade for me

i am a previous cannon owner, and was very happy with my camera. but i was a little behind the times at 5MP and decided that a little upgrade was needed. though i enjoy taking pictures of my kids, and try to do the best possible job i can, i am by no means a photographer. i dont understand white balances and when to change them so i really needed a camera that had good presets for common situations. the sx200 has that and more. the new menu set up makes it easier for me to remember where things are and the large view screen is much better at focusing on pictures than my own eyes - which need some help of their own!!
the quality of the pictures is a far cry from my 5 MP and i love that i can put the camera in my pocket instead of carrying around a hulking case.
AWESOME.
the only annoyance is that i havent found a good way to hold the camera while taking photos. the flash pops in and out on the upper left hand corner - just where my fingers would normally be, and there is no rounded edge like i have on my other cannon to hold. so as my hand shakes because of the akward handling, the IS kicks in -- but still sometimes the pics are a little blurry
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu
Cons: ackward to hold

Cannon Sx200 IS

I bought this camera for the powerful lense. It serves its purpose but after trying to replace an digital SLR thinking it would be the same I was wrong.
This camera does not do close ups well, especially jewelry and watches. My less expensive point and shoot did a much better job taking closeups.
Considering the price of this camera I did well but I will need to get a SLR with a big flash do take night shots.
Unless as the directions state you are no more than 10 feet from the subject forget a shot in a dim area. Most of my pictures are at night and not on a perfect clear sunny day.
I wish there was a button to disable that pop up flash. It gets stuck under my finger when I am taking a non flash picture. You can disable the flash but the little flash still pops up. It would make sense to me to disable the pop up flash when the flash is turned off in the camera.
Pros: add a pro
Cons: add a con

Love this camera!!!

I'm amazed at how crisp and clear the pictures are when I use a tripod. Hand held still yields great pics, but I recommend using tripods on all your shots when you can.
The movies are fantastic, and when the volume is right when I record it, I feel like I'm getting professional quality movies from this very affordable camera!
There are TONS of settings available which I don't even use... I can only imagine if I were to really understand the full potential of it!!
If you can find one, GET IT.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, affordable
Cons: Poor Low-Light Performance, no stereo recording capability.

Nice little super zoom

After reading a lot of negatives, I still bought the camera as it has one of the longest zooms on the market and a lot of manual controls not available on other cameras. Thus, if you know what you are doing, you can control image quality BUT you need to read the manual first as a lot of the controls are not in the same place as previous PoerShots and there are some new features which aren't immedaiatley clear.
Battery life - I charged the battery each day before I went out (Singapore for 6 days) and never had any problems. It never even showed less than 100% the whole time and I use a lot of fill in flash.
Flash location. Nobody has really explained that when the flash pops up, there is a cover flap that also raises and you need to take your finger off that flap when powering down. BUT when you see it, understand it, you avoid it. I have very large hands and none of the issues reported in some other reviews affected me. I would have liked to see a bigger function wheel like the SX10 but it is not a deal breaker.
Size/weight - it never bothered me. I carried my old SD450 at the same time and the weight difference is marginal and the size is not that big and you are getting a 12 X zoom.
I do think a tripod is going to be useful in low light and I do appreciate the ISO 1600 and 3200 settings avaialble so you can avoid flash.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Lightweight/Portable

Love My Canon

I only buy Canon cameras so I am definitely prejudiced. I have always bought the smallest camera that gave me the most features and this camera purchase was no exception. For such a small package, much more portable and unobtrusive than a full-blown SLR plus a camcorder, this camera does it all. I purchased it two days before my son's graduation ceremony and read the manual for almost the entire seven hour drive to the university. I shot pictures of everything as we drove, testing this and playing with that. I knew I would be recording a huge life event and didn't want to miss anything. When I arrived in the dimly lit venue, I spent the fifteen minutes before the ceremonies "playing" with the various settings to find the one that would work best in the low light. You MUST read the manual that comes with the camera. I am no professional and have not learned how to use the manual settings on the camera. Having read the manual, I knew of three options to try in low light and found the one that worked best for me. I also recorded the keynote speakers with the HiDef video, in the same low light conditions. The pictures and video are amazing. The 12x optical zoom was one of the features that made me purchase this camera instead of the smaller Powershot models that also took HiDef movies, and the zoom did not disappoint. I got great shots of my son from a distance. Since you cannot change the zoom length during the recording of a video, I zoomed in on the location I wanted to shoot before beginning to record and was perfectly happy. If you were accustomed to zooming in and out during recording with your camcorder, you will probably save yourself from the headache you got when viewing your movies. lol During the ceremony they played a short video on an overhead screen. I sat the camera in my lap, pointed it at the movie screen, and let it record. My husband couldn't believe the quality of the resulting recording. It looked like i shot the video firsthand. I took pictures in the sun, in the field, in the restaurant, by moonlight. I took these pictures in AUTO mode and using the various dedicated shooting modes offered. Some modes cause the shutter to be slower and require a steady hand but the blurry shots I did occasionally experience were few. And don't miss the feature that allows you to shoot the sunset. Even the telephone poles and the telephone lines strung between them look romantic with the setting sun. :) The single, BIG aggravation with this camera is the flash setup. I can somewhat understand why it ALWAYS pops up, to be ready under any circumstance. But it's position is a royal pain. At first I kept hindering the operation of the motor that makes it pop up and I was afraid I would harm it because my finger was positioned on top of the flash. Once the flash is up, there is more than enough room to hold the camera comfortably and easily, and I did become accustomed to removing my finger, but it is a poor design and I am surprised at Canon for this. Not at all typical. But, this camera takes sharp pictures and videos and I will no longer drag my camcorder around. With the 16GB card I bought it held everything I cared to capture on film.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, great video
Cons: position of flash
