What's great about it: Dries the air quickly.
What's not so great: Noisy water pump, poor instruction manual
This unit comes with a 25-foot hose, so the collected water can be pumped outside through a window or drain.
It has two places where water can come out:
The first is on the bottom of the unit, and allows the water to drain from the unit using gravity. The second is higher up, and is the place where you attach 25-foot drain hose. The unit will pump up to 10 feet vertically (they claim) so you can put the drain hose higher than the unit itself or pump the water over an obstacle.
When the small holding tank inside the unit fills up, the pump switches on to empty the tank. This is a super nice feature.
Annoyance: The holes are not marked, and if you're not looking closely, the pump outflow is hard to see.
Another Annoyance: The automatic pumping feature is ON ALL THE TIME, despite what the documentation says. So if you don't use the gravity drain, water will pump out the hose-connection when the internal tank fills up. (Again, despite what it says in the manual, the "pump" button on the control panel ONLY activates the pump to empty the internal tank, something you should do before moving the unit. The pump button DOES NOT turn on/off the automatic pumping feature.)
Inside, the unit is well built. It's a standard air-conditioning compressor with the cold and hot coils sandwiched. (And you should be asking, "How do you know what it looks like inside?")
Well, it's all about the pump. When the internal tank fills up, the pump switches on, and pumps the tank dry-- except that it can't sense when the tank is really empty, so it just pumps for a few minutes and shuts off.
When the tank empties, the pump can literally wake the dead. I opened my unit to see why. The pump itself was touching the unit's outside case, transmitting the loud vibrations directly into the room, like a speaker. I had to file down a bit of the case (and the pump) to quiet the thing down. After that it was better, but still pretty loud.
I ended up replacing the pump with something quieter I found on-line.
So yeah, it works great, the humidistat functions as promised, the room is dry as a bone and the three fan speeds are quite nice. Just don't expect to take a nap nearby, or feel the need to rely on the shoddy instruction manual.
This unit is ideal for a basement, especially if you can place it right over a floor drain.
I would recommend this to a friend!
