The Insignia™ HD Radio Portable Player was easy to set up. The HD station scan easily picked up the local HD stations. Sound quality is good.

The Insignia® HD Radio Portable Player is okay

on December 1, 2009

This HD radio does not pick up V98.7 HD, smooth jazz station. That's the only reason I purchased this radio. Since V98.7 FM was taken off the FM band, I was uable to listen to my music of choice. None of the other radio stations could compare for music. I was told, by a friend, to buy the Insignia® HD Radio Portable Player, that I would be able to pick V98.7 HD station on this HD portable radio. Well, after purchase I found that the HD radio picks up everything but V98.7 HD station. This is the only station I listen too, at work (10 hours a day). I really need an HD radio that can pick up V98.7 HD station. If someone can recommend a radio, at reasonable pricing, let me know. I really miss my smooth Jazz music while at work.
What's great about it: the product is okay.
What's not so great: I can not pick up V98.7 smooth Jazz station, the reason for purchasing an HD radio

Bought this about a month ago...returned it today. Was very happy with the radio, then all of a sudden it just stopped working....I didn't get reception on any stations. I was using it at work and was able to get all the stations I liked and then one day I just couldn't tune into anything.

Insignia® HD Radio Portable Player

This is a great buy. Excellent lock in on HD signals. Good battery life. Design-wise the only thing I don't like is the cover to the charging receptacle, which I fear will break off.
I hope the next version will include digital HD TV audio. Maybe that isn't allowed yet by the FCC, but it should be.
What's great about it: HD FM reception
What's not so great: lacks HD TV reception

Nice HD Radio

I was sick of listening to the same old tunes on my Ipod ...This HD radio is the answer to the boredom.. You get great HD channels with latest music , and also this thing is very light and small , great reception, has a color screen which displays the track title being played and stuff. Also for 50 bucks I think this is an awesome deal..
What's great about it: Good for the price
What's not so great: Battery is not user Replaceable

Sound is really good. My first experience with ear buds -- better than expected. Reception sometimes drops out, especially when driving, but otherwise very good. I have two other HD radios and listen to jazz on WGUC-HD2 all the time and this works as well as others. I found the arm strap awkward, so I don't use it - I just put the radio in a pocket.
What's great about it: Great sound. Good reception.

disappointing

I saw the portable HD radio in Best Buy and wanted to try. In my area I could only find one FM station with an HD alternate channel. It was a rock station that just played different rock records on the two channels, so no real advantage unless you want to continually switch channels. If it had an AM radio and was an mp3 player I would have kept it.
What's great about it: portable HD radio
What's not so great: only one FM HD station, no AM radio, no mp3

Surprisingly good quality, HD radio features

on February 28, 2010

Remarkably good quality rechargeable radio in a very small package and price. Excellent audio quality, good earbuds and armband included in the price. Easy to tune although, but as in all HD stations, you must wait for the station to "lock in" for a few seconds, and a strong signal is necessary to pull in the substations. I enjoyed listening to many new stations in HD, particularly Q2, the new WQXR classical music station in New York City. Since this little radio has a rechargeable battery, it requires daily recharging depending on how many hours of use, and if the power is completely drained, reset buttons must be reentered. Same is true of regular battery operated radios, but this one runs down every 10 hours or so of listening. A terrific gift for radio lovers, and unlike other small portable radios, since it has all of the extra HD stations.
What's great about it: Size, ease of use, tuner sensitivity, good earbuds, armband included
What's not so great: Rechargeable battery does not hold charge for long, loses memory settings
I would recommend this to a friend!

Unit is great but it came without protective cover

I love HD radio. For some reason, the one I received did not have the temporary clear plastic protective cover that usually is statically adhered to the display screen. I am sure that I was not sent a used unit but I can't explain how it arrived this way. It works great, I recommend it to anyone who wants clarity and additional channel choices.

Not so good...

This unit is a great example of an epic fail. The idea of a mobile HD radio is good. However, the function button layout and lame, limited character digital display make this a poor choice in today,s market. I returned this model and traded it for the less compact larger (also portable) Insignia model.

Where´s the AM band?

on July 17, 2009

from Quincy, IL
I´m a old pal. Fan of AM radio. Believed all these years in the promise that HD-RADIO will save AM. Now, I got a small USB charged (charger not included) portable, lithiun battery powered radio, with HD-FM only. Where´s the AM with FM sound? And no tagging to iTunes. Is this a radio or a toy? It is a radio, it´s a failure. If it´s a toy, a would rather buy a iPOD.
What's great about it: Nothing.
What's not so great: HD-RADIO promises not delivered.

Overall, great item

This is the first portable (i.e. battery-powered) HD Radio receiver and it's amazing for its size and price. The sound quality is better than I expected and even the analog quality and reception are strong.
The HD reception is as good as that of my tabletop model and the radio picks up distant stations even in my poor location but as expected the digital signal has trouble in big buildings especially at a distance.
The earbuds are a little tricky to fit into the socket so that both buds work, at least on mine. Also the battery life was a little disappointing (as expected with digital); I didn't get the full 10 hours on my first charge.
All it all it gets the HD2 channels I bought it for.
What's great about it: Super value, easy to use, portability, better than expected sound and reception
What's not so great: Short battery life, earbuds hard to use

Could be better

Fix the reception and they have a winner.
This unit is pretty inexpensive. When it works, it works well. It comes with okay headphones.
Poor reception - range about 15 miles. I live about 45 miles from NY - right on Long Island Sound, no mountains, aside from trees and horses, nearly a clear line of sight to Manhattan. The car’s built in HD picked up the Manhattan stations immediately. Car's radio can get most of New York's FM stations. But not this Portable Insignia. Driving to Manhattan this morning, this little Insignia only started to receive the same stations in Pelham, NY - I looked at a map - only about 15 miles from midtown Manhattan. Granted, the Insignia Ant was inside the car. No ext antenna connection, so you cannot improve the range.
No AM receiver. To get the AM HD stations, you have to hunt for them in the FM band. Example, WCBS 880 News in NYC is buried on the third channel HD3 of the Oldies Music station 101.1 FM. Not easy to navigate to. Sometimes if it loses the signal, or perhaps after the unit was turned off for a while, the 'Preset' to 101.1 HD3 reverted to 101.1 HD1, so I started getting music instead of news.
I didn't notice any difference in sound quality of this unit vs the car's built-in HD. Both have the same HD issues: The sound quality of HD vs FM is barley noticeable. Sometimes worse - as you get a "tin" sounding depending on the bandwidth of the transmitter. Sort of like a low quality MP3. But HD vs AM Radio is a quantum leap, no more hiss and pops. But FM solved the same issue 50 years ago, so all you get with HD is better use of the FM spectrum, and no splash between strong signals on a nearby freq vs weak stations you're trying to listen to.
The menus are not too confusing. Nice color screen, but hard to see in sunlight. Using the presets are a little confusing (since I had to read the manual), everything else was straight forward.
What's great about it: Small Size, Color screen, Low price, Common USB port charger
What's not so great: Poor reception & no ext antenna

Excellent portable HD player!

on September 14, 2009

I bought this primarily for use on my motorcycle. It is an excellent product that works exceptionally well! I now use it at home very regularly lounging at home and around the house. It is very small and portable / has good sound quality and pulls in a good reception.
HD radio is so cool - I couldnt believe the number of channels it makes available to you. It also pulls in most local AM channels as HD channels - so you have the range COVERED as far as radio goes. People complain it's not an MP3 player - BIG DEAL - it's $50.00 - and is not meant to be an MP3 player. If you need an MP3 and HD player in one, buy the Zune HD and pay 250-300 dollars. Or........
Buy the Insignia for 50.00 and then a cheap IPOD.
Only negatives -
1. The earbuds are cheap - nuff said.
2. It had no AC charger - the USB charger works great however and the unit charges exceptionally quickly!
Buy it and smile.............
Sods
What's great about it: Simple to use - good reception quality - nice display - good battery life - small!! Inexpensive!!
What's not so great: cheap earbuds - not an MP3 player - but not meant to be either.

great product , but rarely have HD reception mostly FM but still better then normal FM ... but I guess it drains battery quick i guess because of picking up HD transmission is a reason behind it ??not sure just my guess .....but still a very much desirable product for any radio lover . unfortunately i have to return mine as it had a very short battery life . I miss this one as its best for my morning walking companion .

Best Portable Device of All Time

on September 27, 2009
Posted by: Nate208
from Harrisburg, Pa
I just bought this and immediately I was blown away. The battery in the unit had plenty of juice in it so I could listen to it right away. It came with a nice exercise arm band holder which is nice to help keep the radio from getting scratched. The screen shuts it's self off after a little bit of time so that it can save power. I could easily pre-set 10 stations which is nice because I can find the stations that I'd like to listen to faster. I don't have to pay for a monthly subscription for hd radio which is a plus. On some of the hd stations it tells me the name of station, artist, and song that's playing. Overall, I think this is a great gadget to have.
What's great about it: I can use this at work and at the gym, it's much Cheaper then the ipod touch, and the sound quality is quite superior.
What's not so great: Super long battery life?

less commercials!

on November 17, 2009
Posted by: sandra4549
from san jose, ca
i heard there were less comercials on HD. I used to have sirius but hated their billing practices and the antenna scratched my car. this plugs into the aux in my scion! at first i thought it wasn't working but i just had to turn up the volume to like 40 (i guess cause the jack is meant for earbuds). anyways, not as many stations as i hoped, but def less commercials. same reception as the FM radio it seems, which would be a bummer for road trips and the reason I did like the satellite radio. it think its a bit pricey for just a radio. i don't see any big improvement in the sound. just not 10 commercials between every song. that's the only diff. i don't know who is complaining about headphones. its a standard jack. you could switch out to something else.
What's great about it: works as aux in my scion
What's not so great: thot there would be more stations
