I was one of the few who actually hadn't seen Shaun of the Dead by the time Hot Fuzz came out, but I was really excited to see it, as a fan of action films and off-beat British comedies. When I finally did see it, I enjoyed it, and upon watching it repeatedly afterwards, found a movie that gets better every time. Writers Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg wrote such an intricate script for Hot Fuzz, giving us a comedy that sets up many of its jokes sometimes as much as an hour before the punchline. And a script is only as good as the film's cast, and in this case, Wright managed to round up an amazing ensemble, from the principle cast (Pegg and Nick Frost, police played by Jim Broadbent, Paddy Considine, Rafe Spall to mention a few) to the local townsfolk (Timothy Dalton, Billie Whitelaw, Edward Woodward, and more) to even some small cameos (Bill Nighy, Martin Freeman, Steve Coogan, and even Peter Jackson and Cate Winslet, both cleverly disguised).
While this is certainly a spoof of buddy cop action movies in the Jerry Bruckheimer mold, this is not the sole influence on the film. The film draws from many other sources as well, such as horror/thriller films, and at one point Hot Fuzz takes on an Agatha Christie "whodunnit" style, until erupting into utter (and wonderful) chaos.
And I have to mention Edgar Wright's cinematic style. Wright has fast become one of my favorite directors - his visual style and flair has a very flashy and polished look, which gives it an almost ironic superficial feel, but what I love about his work is that it's never style over substance. If you look beneath that surface, there is a great story here with wonderful characters that you connect with, that Wright (along with co-writer Pegg, of course) develops wonderfully.
As for the disc, I don't think you can find a DVD with a better load of special features. First off, you get a hilarious batch of outtakes (expect no less from such a hilarious bunch of people), a making-of documentry, a slew of web videos from while production was filming, deleted scenes, a cop film called "Dead Right", which Edgar Wright made while he was a high school student, and a feature-length documentary called "The Fuzzball Rally", which follows Wright, Pegg, and co-star Nick Frost on their US press tour for the film, which is absolutely hilarious, and is mandatory viewing for fans.
All in all, an excellent film and disc, and a tremendous value.
