Solid Upgrade
on December 30, 2009

I bought this camera as an upgrade to my EOS 30D. The Canon EOS 7D is certainly a solid upgrade:
This camera works well for a variety of subjects; I have used it to shoot sports, wildlife, landscapes, architecture, weddings and portraiture.
The APS-C size sensor is compatible with EF and EF-S lenses, a capability lost on cameras with full-frame sensors. This can be a factor, if you have multiple EF-S lenses and want to continue using them with the 7D.
The high ISO range (up to 12,800) eclipses low light settings, like school gyms, and multiple noise reduction settings keep grain to acceptable levels. Also, 8 frames-per-second shooting lets me capture detailed sequential motion series of animals and athletes.
Tracking moving subjects works very well in AI Servo mode. Capturing birds in flight with a 500mm super telephoto lens--handheld--is not a challenge for this camera. Plus, the AI Servo mode can be customized to meet various in-motion subject demands.
The 7D features a Q, or Quick Control, button which displays 16 camera settings. User's can change each via the Quick Control dial or the Main Dial. This saves critical time, and proves invaluable, if you are shooting an event like a wedding ceremony, where you can't have a "re-do."
The 7D is packed with 27 Custom Functions in four categories: Exposure, Image, AutoFocus/Drive, and Operation/Others. You can also display the Electronic Level, a Electronic Grid, auto focus points being used in your images, hot spots in images, etc. These features give feedback on what's good, and bad, about an image, saving frustration in the end.
With the 7D, files are big. Consider Image Quality selection carefully; if you shoot RAW+JPEG, your file sizes will exceed 25MB. You can fill up a 4GB CF card with 160, or fewer, images. Use high-end compact flash cards to improve data storage rate. Also, see if you computer can handle the demand of such file sizes, and verify your programs are compatible with the RAW format.
There are compatibility issues between the 7D's RAW format images and some of my editing programs. To compensate, I convert RAW images to JPEG in Canon's Digital Photo Professional for later editing; or, I select JPEG image quality prior to shooting. I expect editing program updates to fix this issue.
I highly encourage owners to read the user's manual and set up their 7D to match their shooting style and to take advantage of these capabilities. You can even download video tutorials from Canon onto the 7D and play them on the camera's LCD.
Overall, I am very pleased with my EOS 7D, and I recommend it to anyone wanting to purchase an affordably priced, professional grade camera.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD
Cons: software compatibility

Good Deal with kit len 28-135

For the past 5 years i had become interested in canon's cameras, I have been a long time user of another popular name brand, But when i saw this camera with the 28-135 kit lens for $$ I jumped on it and have not regreted it. I paired it up with a 35mm f/1.8 IS USM and 85mm f/1.8 Prime Lens and the pictures are fantastic, If this camera is still available get it ASAP, not bad in low light with good glass.

Great cam for the money

Great camera! This camera replaced the 20D I used for several years. I ended up shooting a lot of sports and the 8fps was a big help. I needed a fast fps because we shoot a lot of shots of batters swinging and need to get 4 - 5 shots during the swing. WIth this cam, I am able to get an average of 6. The speed was my main reason for upgrade.
Aside from that, the only thing I would have liked is the ability to use CF and SD cards simultaneously (like the 1D MIII) and also a min. ISO of 50. This is not a HUGE deal because the 50 ISO was to be for long exposures but that's nothing a set of ND filters won't fix. However, this is why I rated features 4 out of 5.
After using a 20D for years (very happily), I was very impressed with several features of the 7D, including:
Huge LCD. I can actually see my compositions when I review now! Long battery life. I purchased a second battery in case I needed one for long days at the ballpark, where we routinely spend 8 - 10 hours shooting games. So far, I haven't needed to use second battery.
I like being able to create folders on the CF cards in camera and shoot to the ones I choose. This helps when shooting multiple games and speeds up workflow enormously. Lots and lots of great features that I could talk about but I will just say that the only thing really missing is full frame sensor (which I was unwilling to pay for so it's fine) and the dual memory cards (again, unwilling to pay $3000+ for a camera at this time) and the 50 ISO.
I think most people will be pleased with this cameras performance and quality. Some have complained about the AF not being great. 2 pieces of advice. 1, get the latest firmware and 2, read your manual. You have a sophisticated AF system and need to make sure you have set it to do what you want. I had this problem at the beginning but once I learned how to use the multiple settings, everything is A-OK!
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

Great Camera for Sports Photography

Got my 7D two weeks ago. I am impressed by the build quality. I was considering the 50D as an addition to my XTi. But when I got wind of the 7D there was no question this was the camera for me. The picture quality is impressive. The focus options and focus speed are top notch. Since i shoot primarily motorsports fast sharp focusing is essential. The camera also performs well when shooting portrais and in low light. Great color reproduction. And the HD video is a nice bonus as well. You cannot go wrong buying this camera. I highly recommend it to any serious amateur or above.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, good battery life
Cons: none that i have come across yet

Feature-rich and Affordable

Considering an upgrade from the solid 40D, I was initially concerned about all the adverse online user comments about faulty autofocus. Having now used the 7D for 1,000+ college sports shots, both outside in good light and inside in poor light, I find the the autofocus works flawlessly, if you take the to learn how to use it properly. High ISO performance is improved over the 40D, the 8 fps shutter worked as promised, and the increased sensor mp count allows for usable crops. The camera is a solid workhorse and I couldn't be more pleased.
Pros: Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, good battery life

SUPERB Camera

I am an amateur photographer and have had the 7D for about 11 months. It has taken me a while to learn to use all of great features like the built-in remote flash capability, the fast, accurate 19 point autofocus (5 different AF modes), and the 8 frames per second. But, from the first day my photography was improved and has continued to improve as I continue to learn (Don’t miss Canon’s excellent Digital Learning Center tutorials, tips & techniques). The solid feel of the body speaks to you every time you pick it up. The 100% viewfinder image, the improved ISO (good as shot up to 800, and I get good useable images up to 3200 ISO with Lightroom 3), and the great depth of field effects from the crop sensor (1.6) all help to boost your confidence whether shooting fast action night football ,dimly lit dance stages or outdoor family reunions. My 7D, however, came with a kit lens (28-135). While the lens is useable, it’s slow to focus, loud, a little soft at both ends, and lacks sufficient range for my needs. I would have much preferred Canon to have shipped the 7D with the 15-85 (or a 70-200 f4 IS {:<)).
I take a lot of pictures of my family (football, dance reviews, vacations, etc.), so far, over 8000 images since I got the7D. My keep rate has gone from less than 30% to about 80% after acquiring the 7D and a couple of decent lenses. I had some older third-party EOS lens which worked fine for my old Canon film camera. Those lenses also functioned on the 7D, but the images were usually just not adequate. I currently have the EFS 10-22, a 17-50 f2.8, and a EF 70-300. My 70-300 is soft near 300 so am hoping to upgrade to the new 70-300L or to a 70-200 f4 IS. I have tried a number of different lenes on the 7D body (bought, borrowed, and leased) and I believe “L” or other top quality lenses are almost a must for this camera as the 18mp sensor will reveal even the slightest lens flaw. I would recommend this camera to any serious amateur, but if you just want to shoot a few good snapshots then look toward something like the Powershot S95 or the G11.
Pros: built in remote flash control, 100% viewfinder, improved low noise sensor, 18 mp supports tight cropping, weathersealed, very programable menu, hd video
Cons: needs top quality lenses(spell expensive), complex capbilities long learning curve, needs monopod for stable video (may be me), should come with a lens equa to the quality of the

Best camera for your money and more!
on February 1, 2012

To start with, this camera is very solidly built. Weather sealed, and trust me, very well. I’ve had mine in downpours, heavy snow and even in the deserts of South East Asia with extreme heat and sand. Never once has this camera failed to give me what I expect, but it does it even better. I stepped up from the 40D and found out very quickly that they are two very different cameras. It took me a little while to get reoriented with the 7D. Everything is so much more advanced than the 40D. Don’t get me wrong, I will never part with my 40D, but the 7D is my primary…always. At first I saw quite a few blurred photos. After I got to know the very advanced auto focus system on this camera I was off and running. Now with over 30,000 shots, I now shoot at about a 95% to 98% keep rate on all of my photo shoots. That 2%-5% is 100% operator error. The autofocus is extremely advanced and takes a little work to master it, but once you have this camera will blow your mind. Thanks to the dual processors, this camera is lightning fast in every aspect. I do a lot of wildlife photography, so the speed this camera offers is everything you would ever want for both sports and wildlife. Battery life is amazing! The most shots I have gotten out of one battery charge was 1600 shots at an air show at the base I’m stationed at. In two days of use, 1600 photos, and again 98% were keepers. Pretty awesome when you consider an airplane is coming at you at around 600mph and every shot in that 25 shot string was on point sharp. Awesome camera Canon!
Pros: fast af, battery life, Superior build quality, nice fit in my hand, weight, great weather seal, fast start up, lense selection, very rugged, excellent image quality

7D Home Run!!!

I have been shooting with the 7D for over a month now and it is amazing. The first reviews about focus issues nearly kept me from buying this camera. I tested the 7D on day two at the Montana State High School CC Championships and it performed flawlessly. It didn't matter if I was shooting at 8fps or 3.5fps the focus worked great. I have used this camera for landscapes, protraits, and sporting events and it has never had an issue with what I want it to do. The addition of different artistic optical filters greatly improves the results obtained with the 7D. The only drawback is that it has slightly elevated noise which is most likely due to the high resolution, high ISO, and high burst speed in one package. Overall this camera will do whatever you ask of it. Just make sure you understand the autofocus and how to properly use manual focus.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life
Cons: noisy, Heavy/Bulky
