better than the 5d
on December 7, 2009
Posted by: joeytandthestarlighters
I just bought this a few weeks ago and haven't even tested everything that the 7d has on it. The picture quality is superb and I would say, better than the 5d (Mark 1). It is easier to use than the older 5d and has far more features. Now I can take pictures that would have required flash, without flash and that still come out great.
Just love this camera.
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

Canon eos 7D

A beautiful camera that has a wonderful ergonomic design, very easy to use. However, I was hoping to get a much better result in my auto focus modes as Canon boasts that the dual digic 4 processors will do just that. I shoot in a lot of fast paced ambient lighting situations like motor sports, but was not overly impressed with the outcome. Many shots were out of focus and with my need to wear corrective lenses and the inability to use live view because of the outdoor light, my experience was not what I had hoped for. I just ordered a Hoodman 3.0 loupe and I hope that it helps because there is no af in video mode.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: noisy, o.k. autofocus

Perfect Compliment
on March 4, 2010

I am now in EOS heaven! This is the perfect compliment to the 5D Mark 2. If It sits still, I use the 5D mark 2 and if it moves I now have the 7D. The 7D is FAST, and, as long as you have good glass, it's terrific in all situations. The 50D was NOT as bad as some thought, although, replacing my 50 with this has made me very happy.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation
Cons: Complicated controls/menu

Everything and more than I expected

I never thought I could have a camera of this quality. It is fast and gives me the ability to produce better shots than I ever expected. It is built well. I love the overall performance of this camera. I had a Canon XTi prior to this camera, and the 7D is wonderfully superior.

Great Camera - for Photo and Video
on August 10, 2010

I was a bit skeptical about buying this camera because I'm a filmmaker and shoot photos as a hobby - but decided to upgrade to it. I've been running around doing test filming and taking pictures all I can and I've been really impressed and happy with the purchase. It's the best SLR I've owned. So many options to help you get the look you want. The video capabilites are really great too. Obviously, this is a stills camera first - so it doesn't have everything I would love for it to, but it's still wonderful for filming. I really think it's a great camera.

Quality Continues
on August 17, 2010

After retiring my 30+ year-old Canon A-1, the EOS 7D continues the tradition of Canon Quality. Not able to afford the EOS 1D series nor the 5D II, I managed to "splurge" for the 7D. I don't regret it. This camera has all the features I need and much more. 18 megapixels is amazing as the quality of the photos are excellent, even when cropped to a small portion of the orginal shot. The default exposure metering is very accurate, but one still has the option of "tweaking" the exposure settings as desired. The various feature options and settings are logically arranged and easily changed. The viewfinder is large and bright while the autofocus choices are many without being overwhelming. The autofocus is "right-on," The wireless flash capabilities are extremely welcome as I no longer have to fumble/stumble over wires and cables. Truly, an excellent camera!

good, but can be better

I recently switched over from Canon XSi to 7D. I liked my XSi, but was at the point that image quality was starting to matter more. 7D has great flexibility and adjustability, and takes great pictures. Although there is no doubt that the Auto Focus will require a firmware update. Occasionally, the AF stops working altogether, and the only way to reset it is to either change the lens focal zoom, or turn it off and then back on. There is also another less frequent issue, when the camera indicates error between the camera and the lens. Again cycling power to the camera fixes the problem.
It’s also a bit heady, but I can live it with that. My Rebel was just perfect in size and weight.
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality
Cons: Shaky operation, Heavy/Bulky, auto focus anomolies

My 1st DSLR
on February 9, 2011

I contemplated buying a DSLR for months and wanted to make sure that the one I purchased shot video. I was not disappointed with the 7D. It took me a little while to get used to the plethora of options in the menus but once I familiarized myself it got easier.
The build quality on this camera is fantastic. It will stand up to some pretty rough bumps and scrapes. The video that comes out of it is stellar and I appreciate that it shoots in both 1080p and 720p.
It has a 100% viewfinder which may not seem like a big deal but you usually only find this feature on much more expensive cameras like the 5D or the 1D.
The still images are good too and it excels in low-light and you can get workable images up to 3200 ISO. My one piece of advice is buy the camera body by itself and skip the kit lens.
Pros: good battery life, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu
Cons: Heavy/Bulky
