I Own Canon 1Ds MkIII, 1D MkIII, 5D MkII and 50D cameras and 6 lumps of L glass, replaced the 50D backup with the 7D about a month ago with no regrets. RAW files can be used with CS4 with 5.5 RAW converter. I also have the battery grip and hand strap, I find it much better with this setup and I have used it exclusively for the past month. Love the new on / off and live view / movie switches - so much easier. Have found sharpness much better than my other cameras to the point I haven't bothered setting up the micro adjustment. Only niggle is the shutter sound which sounds very tinny compared to my other cameras. Well done Canon for listning to us !
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Nice features/settings, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life, new on / off switch, inbuilt flash control
Cons: shutter sound

Great feature list - Quality Control lacking

As a long-time Canon DSLR user (own D60, 40D, and now 7D), I was excited by the feature set announced for the 7D and grabbed one within days of release. Now that I've had it a couple of weeks, I have observations. I love the built-in flash controller, but the range is pretty limited. I love the lens micro-adjust feature, but unlike Canon's previous DSLRs, you are forced to use the micro-adjust for every lens because the default settings are so far off as to not be usable out of the box. Hey Canon, the setting should at least be close enough to use so that we can use micro-adjust for fine tuning, not to make the lenses usable. Also, do not trust the automatic focus point selection. It will nearly always select the wrong one. Switch the camera to spot focus and choose your own spot. When taking photos of people seated at a table, the stuff on the table will be in focus and the people won't. It seems like the automatic focus point selection was more intelligent on the 40D. Perhaps face recognition should have been added to the focus point selection algorithms. As it is now, it's the default setting and it's useless, so I recommend everyone switch to spot focus immediately after turning the camera on. It will save you a lot of frustration if you just want to take some quick shots. Also, this camera is very picky about large capacity Compact Flash cards. I have several different brands and only ONE of those brands (starts with "S" ends with "k") will format correctly in the camera (they all work fine in the 40D). If you can get around these quirky issues, it's a great camera. Granted, I have one of the earliest off the assembly line, so these bugs may be quality control issues which will be worked out in firmware updates or minor tweaks to the hardware in the future. Many people aren't experiencing focus issues, so it definitely seems to be quality control related. Overall though, it's a great camera with a crazy long feature list for the price. I'm in love with it.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, good battery life
Cons: Shaky operation, Difficult to use, random focus issues, cf card incompatibility

High Performance at a Low Price

The 7D marks a major change in Canon's philosophy. Prior to this point, there has been a great delineation between Canon's professional 1-series bodies and the rest of their DSLR lineup. The 7D bridges that gap by offering professional features in a relatively low-priced package.
The 7D provides, fast, accurate autofocusing that can track a moving subject, along with a fast 8 frames/second rate. It has a full 100% coverage 1.00X magnification viewfinder. It boasts what may be the lowest image noise level of any APS-C body. The feature set is substantial, the body is solid, and the price is reasonable. The only thing missing is the full frame sensor (and the full frame price). The 7D is a good deal.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

One capable camera

I bought this camera because my current camera, while a fine camera, doesn't have fast or accurate enough AF for me and could use better low-light performance. I have been delighted so far. The AF is faster and more accurate than I could have imagined; AI Servo really works on this camera and one-shot AF is deadly fast and accurate. 8 frames per second is almost like shooting a video, and this camera has real video capability, which I haven't tried yet. The JPEGs straight out of the camera are so good that I am not tempted to do much PP (I did add one notch of sharpness to the default picture style). Noise control is very good; I get about the same noise at ISO 6400 as my previous camera gets at ISO 1600. I really have no complaint so far at all, and I'm ecstatic with what it can do. People say there's a steep learning curve, but if you read the manual and are patient, it's really not so bad, especially if you've used another Canon DSLR.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, good battery life, fast accurate af, amazing resolution
Cons: Missing features/settings, lack of easy mirror lockup, lack of eye-control focus

Really great camera

Have had the camera for about 2 months, and have taken 4,000+ pics. From aylight beach shots to night football and everything in between and the camera excels everywhere. The video is basic, but great quality, full 1080p and outputs in .mov extension, which is great - one less conversion.
Overall, I couldn't be happier with it!
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, easy to use
Cons: Heavy/Bulky

The camera's quality is apparent when it's taken out of the wrapping. Controls/knobs feel solid. Fit & finish are precise. The camera feels balanced when shooting. Easy, self explained, Menu settings. View finder is bright with all camera functions clearly visible. Grid overlay allows for very quick looks at composition and alignment without interfering with subject view. The LCD provides a clear, clean and precise image for quickly determining focus. The new auto-focus system and it's settings provide great flexibility to meet the demands of a variety of different shooting conditions.
Outstanding Photographic tool!
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use

Perfect step up from XSI

After 3 weeks and 5000 pics, I am in LOVE with this camera. So far my sports/soccer shots have been better and more consistent than I imagined they could be. Also, night time soccer (GO SOUNDERS) is now possible even with a slower lens given the ISO capabilities.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Quick Start-up time
Cons: learning curve.

Starter System with No Limitation
on March 15, 2010

When I purchased my Canon 7D, I was oblivious to the world of photography. I was looking for a quality system for use while diving that wasn't going to force me in to a second mortgage. Online reviews and recommendations from my photophilic relatives led me to choose the 7D, and I have not been disappointed.
As I learn each new facet of quality picture taking, I am repeatedly struck by the iPhone saying, "Got an app for that!" I have yet to encounter an option, ability, or feature that the 7D lacks, doesn't perform well, or is a hassle to use. From a versatile exposure metering sytem to incredibly intuitive and effective AutoFocus modes, the Canon 7D makes taking breath-taking photographs more about the time and place and less about fiddling with sophisticated settings and time consuming trial & error.
Wherever I take my 7D, be it the beach, the park, or out on the dive boat, it inspires "camera-envy" in most everyone I encounter. On a dive trip just this past weekend, the comment was, "Oh, you have the GOOD Canon." Indeed, I expected a quality product, which is why I was willing to invest for a little more than the low-end of the market, but I never expected the respect and recognition that my camera has received during my ventures.
I imagine I will reach a hardware limitation sooner or later, but as of yet I have no idea what that limit might be. My Canon 7D does everything I could ask of it.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
