Best Camera I ever owned.

I bought this camera about 5 years ago. I used it for sports photography. The life span is 150,000 shutter actuations. I'm proud to say that my old work horse lasted 553,000 plus actuations. Today I retire her. I replaced her with a 7D Mark II. I hope the second generation is as good as the first.

Use it awhile, you will like it.

I have had the 20d, 30d, and two 50d's as well as the 5dMark2. When I first got the 7d I didn't like it at all. I felt it shot horrible JPEG's and I was very upset with the autofocus. I have since learned that the RAW files from this camera are perhaps the sharpest most colorful I have seen out of any Canon yet. The autofocus is a different deal. Once I set the focus point to the center through programming the camera performed perfectly, much like my old EOS 3 film camera's. The problem here is that when all the focus points are set the camera will go to the movement. If the movement is the ripple and not the duck you will have a focused ripple everytime. Switch the focus to center, focus lock, and you will think this thing is a dream. Just takes a little time to figure stuff out, but don't pass on this camera.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, sharp consistent images.
Cons: could care less about the video.

Excellent upgrade from my aging 20D
on December 17, 2010

After about 6 years of faithful service, it was time to (semi) retire my Canon 20D and upgrade. And so, the Canon 7D won hands down. This was a no-brainer decision for me:
I do not really like zoom lenses, I will only use them when absolutely FORCED to do so. My Canon 10-22mm EF-S lens is the only exception (and that's because sometimes you can't back-up far enough when there is a wall in the way, ha).
A camera lens should exceed the specifications and quality of the digital sensor. Why degrade your maximum potential image quality with an inferior lens? Fixed lenses at comparable focal lengths will always trump the quality of zoom lenses (my opinion of course).
So anyhow, I already owned a bunch of fixed length EF-S (and compatible) lens and that made my decision easy: The 7D is the best Canon currently has to offer for EF-S lens users.
If you've loved your previous Canon D/SLR cameras, you won't be disappointed with this model. It's packed full of new creative ideas, what with so many new features to play around with.
If you are new to photography though, and/or have never used an D/SLR camera before, I wouldn't recommend this model even if money is no object. It has far too many features and options for the experienced photographer and too few of the same for beginners and casual photographers.
Also, this camera is great for creating technically challenging stationary video shots. You can use all your cool lenses to create stunning video.
The 7D is not a camcorder and you.wouldn't want to try to use it as such. This is not something you would want to walk around with while capturing video because, essentially, there is no live/servo auto-focus (you know how an SLR focuses and you wouldn't want that happening in your video as you panned about recording your scene). And you'll want to use a fixed exposure setting on video too because auto-exposure isn't that great while panning about, it's too steppy (or whatever it's called when suddenly your video ISO drops in half as you pan across a room and encounter an illuminated lamp in your scene, ha).
Oh, and the 60 fps video is super cool and opens up a lot of creative possibilities.
Awesome camera. The only thing that would have prevented my purchasing this model would have been the availability of a superior Canon model that was compatible with their EF-S lenses.
The only con I would like to mention is that stupid white box in the middle of live-display when in video mode. Get rid of it.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Bright LCD, Solid Operation
Cons: stupid white box in middle of video display

Noisy

I've used the 7D for almost two years now. I love the feel of the body and the features it provides. I used a 1D MkIII before it and found the focus speed at least comparable if not better. For outdoor, bright light situations, I've found the performance to be superb. However, lower light situations are another story. I quickly noticed the higher ISO (800+) resulted in noise levels that were totally unacceptable. Even the lower ISO levels require noise removal which impacts the sharpness of the images. At indoor events, I now only use my wife's 5D MkII after too many disappointing sessions with my 7D. If your primary needs are for bright light outdoor shots, you will love this camera. If you need to be able to shoot indoors at low light and want anything better than snapshot quality images, I would suggest you move up to the 5D Mk II or III.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation
Cons: noisy

It's not a point and shoot SLR

Ok guys, I've finally got it last week and since then I was playing with my new toy as a five year old. It is a camera designed for photographers, meaning there are no "useless" features, and no "hassle" around things, Everything is simple to find, simple to operate and to operate, however, it is not a toy camera. In my review I will refer to some issues that I've read about that concerned me when I was planning to buy this camera:
Autofocus, in the beginning I was a bit surprised that I didn't get the sharpness that I wanted, but then realized that once you have 19 points of AF, letting them control the picture will soon lead you to disasters. You need to control the AFin order to get what you want, once I've set the points myself, and started to pay attention to where the AF is focusing, pictures are bright clear (up to the hairs in the nose which can cause you a domestic problem). Another issue, it's a 18MP sensor, any hand shake will be visible, my 6.3MP digital rebel is very forgiving in this matter, the 7D is not. Another issue is lenses, unfortunately, little "errors" in the lens is more visible in 18MP image than in 6.3MP image, so are light reflections between the filter and the lens.
Another issue I've read about is focus in low light, that is tricky, cause going up to ISO 12500 means you can take pictures in almost darkness, however in the dark, it's not easy to focus cause you DON'T SEE much. But as far as I tried, it did focus quite well (again, master the focus, don't let it master you).
Anyone having EOS before will find it very intuitive, simple to use and after a short learning curve, it's also easy to handle, a bit heavier than the entry level cameras, but that can be expected and to some degree welcomed, I like to FEEL the camera in my hand.
The grip is a wonderful addition (highly recommended), especially with the 6 AA pack, allowing you to have a relative simple and available backup in the case you are away from electricity (vacations, holly-days or in the wild)
And the sound it makes when shooting, the mirror going up and down, what can I say, there are some features that come as a bonus.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

Best upgrade so far

Very satisfied upon upgrading from 50D to 7D.
I've been very happy with my 50D for almost a year, and I've been shooting sports, Live Concert Performances, Family, wildlife and Landscapes and can't afford a much expensive body, since I invest more on lenses.
Shooting in full HD is really an added bonus.
I have chosen to upgrade to 7D instead of the 5DMkII or 1D just because of budget and the nice feature to adjust video frame rates, also the wide choice of selection of lens available for Canon Crop sensor bodies.
If you have a xxD model camera, and plan of upgrading, the 7D is the one you would want to consider.
Image Quality is very good, speed excellent, construction is perfect.
A lot of changes made on this camera and you'll really enjoy the new features.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation

Incredible Feature Set and Great Performance
on December 10, 2009

I previously owned the 50D. Compared to the 50D, I like the following improvements/differences:
- 19 point customizable focus system
- 1X Viewfinder - very bright and large
- Very low noise up to 800 ISO
- Nice quality 1080P video - although focusing can be tricky for moving subjects
My only gripe is that it does not have a second memory card slot. It would be nice to be able to use SDHC cards.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, fast af
Cons: lack of second memory card slot

Best Canon I have owned so far.

I recently purchased the Canon 7D and feel this is the Best Canon I have owned to date. Previously I have owned, the 10D, 30D, 40D, and Rebel T1i and this is far superior with quality and features. The new focusing system along with the full HD were 2 of the major selling points and they are superb. The customization with the 19 point focusing systems extends creativity and clarity beyond what has been offered outside of the Flagship 1D. The fully manual video recording is a great addition and really allows you to set the mood of the shot with ease. When upgrading it was a choose between the 5D MII and the 7D. The 5D is a great camera as well and the full frame is a huge driving factor that I still want, but I am hoping for a 5D MIII soon with the new 19 point focusing system, new metering, and all the new bells and whistles of the 7D. The only draw back I have is the internal mic and the inability to adjust the audio recording. The internal mic can pick up every little noise. I see the 5D will receive a new firmware update soon to adjust audio and hope the 7D is coming right behind.
In conclusion......I could not be any happier (maybe with full frame) with my 7D. It exceeds my expectations in almost every aspect and recommend this camera to anyone looking for an upgrade and some of the best new features offered in SLR Cameras.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, video quality
Cons: built in mic
