Great Camera, worth the money

This is truly a great camera! I started off with a non Canon SLR in 1973. In 1982 bought my first Canon, the New F-1. Added the motor drive, which was a great add. In 2006 I bought a Canon Power Shot G7. I was not happy with this at all. It just does not compare to an SLR, so in Dec 2010 I bought the Canon EOS 7D DSLR. Unlike a friend of mine, I don’t mind carrying it around! Going Digital has been great. I know many people will not switch from film. Using the 7D in auto mode is great. I find that after using my first 2 SLR’s in manual very easy. I find that using manual mode on the 7D to be a bit of a learning curve, but I’m sure I’ll get there when I stop using the auto mode so much. I have purchased 3 L lenses, which are great. The 7D has a solid feel and is very comfortable to hold. I added the BG-E7 grip which really helps when taking portrait shots. Did I mention that the 7D takes great pictures? I have 2 young grandchildren, which are always on the move and I have taken many great pictures. A great feature of one of my lenses is that I can perform a manual focus correction while in auto focus mode. I have used my 7D to photograph flowers, landscapes, wildlife and museum exhibits. I look forward to photographing other subjects. I used the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM on my 7D in the museums in DC. Pictures came out great without a flash. Most of my pictures have come out great, except when it was my fault rushing the shot for fear I might miss it. The LCD is very bright and clear. Have not had much need to use the live view on the 7D, but that may come from using my SLR’s. I’m not very interested in Video, but have used it on my grandchildren. I have set the video to Full HD (1080) and 30 fps and the quality is great. I will have to experiment with video some more. Canon has a website called the Digital Learning Center. You should check this out. This is the first review I have ever written on anything. I hope you find it helpful!
Pros: good battery life, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Nice features/settings, Simple controls/menu, Bright LCD, excellent lens selection, i'm sure there are more...
Cons: none so far
I would recommend this to a friend!

As a Film Production Student at UCSC, I have access to several prosumer HD video cameras. MiniDV, SDHC or Compact Flash. Leica, Canon, Sony. The list is standard.HD video camcorders cannot give as much visual versatility as the Canon 7D. I have also followed the evolution of this camera since the 10D was released years ago. The work-flow for Canon cameras is unparalleled and easy to use. This is one of the only cameras I could imagine offers the versatility of a professional ENG camera but costs the price of a SLR. If you want to shoot uncompressed 1080p at 24p or 30p this is the camera for you.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable

Excellent Compromise

I have taken a few hundred thousand pictures with this body -- mostly sports action. I like it a lot. The focus point groupings is a function I don't know how I lived without. It really allows me a lot of compositional freedom that is lacking with a single auto focus point. High ISO performance is pretty good and I regularly shoot at 6400 ISO. If you shoot at high ISO, shoot RAW format. Tremendous noise reduction benefit.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, focus point groups

Stunning "WoW"

I've been humming and hawing about this upgrade from a 50D for several months. Absolutely without a doubt worth it. I even purchased 2 5Dll's to compare with the 7D's. One for me and one for my wife as we have friendly competitions. I took the 5Dll's back after some very long and hard decisions. I compared both the 7D and the 5Dll's and saw with our own eyes that the 7D was indeed clearer blown up. I was told that we would see that the 5Dll's were better blown up. Wrong. If you are on the fence about upgrading to full frame, take a good hard look at the 7D. But make sure you use good glass. We both have the 24-105 L glass on the 7D's and the pictures we came back home with were stunning compared to our 50D's we both have. Don't hesitate to buy this amazing camera.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

Worked great for about 3 months, then it started. Soft focus with every lens. Focus jumps around. Gets confused when there are more than one item n the focus point. Battery life is less than other brands. Slows as molasses in January. Truthfully I won't ever buy another canon product.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

An outstanding upgrade

I have been using Canon DSLR cameras since the D60 was released. I have used the D60 for several years then I upgraded to the 30D when the D60 became damaged beyond repair. The 30D was a nice bump in resolution, but not an upgrade that made me say wow.
The 7D is an upgrade that got a "WOW" out of me. The focus and response time is great. Performance of this camera is leaps beyond the 30D. This camera is no slouch. Features and button placement are easy to work with. The battery life is much higher than any of the BP-511 batteries that have been in use since the D60. I think it would be nice it I could still use the ones I have accumulated in the battery handle, but no good. I don't think that will be an issue since it may be a good selling point for my 30D.
The video is smooth and crisp. I wouldn't use it for a primary video camera only because the camera only writes up to a 4GB file then it stops. That's about 30 minutes of recording time per video. That's great for doing quick takes. The IS feature of the EF lenses don't work with the video mode. The pictures still look smooth and rich in color. The advantage of the 7D is that it can use any EF lens so I can use anything from my 14mm to 400mm lens for doing short videos. I also don't need to carry my video camera around with me unless I want to record more lengthy videos.
The only thing I marked down so far as a con is the less than full size image chip. It's great that an 18Mp CMOS chip can be made so small, but the native 1.6x zoom feature is annoying with some of my lenses.
In all, a great camera with very good features for anyone who is looking for a killer setup that has plenty of speed for almost any photo op.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life
Cons: not a full size image sensor

Good Stills but Video falls short!

The Image quality in stills is better at Hi ISO above 800 but at low ISO is not an improvement from the 40D. I am seeing more noise from ISO 100 to 400 on the 7D. It cleans up well in post and down sampling helps but the real factor here is the poor video downsampling.
Video mode sounds perfect until you have to look at the files and see the quality. The downsampling in the camera is just not up to par even with the HV series of camcorders. 720p 60 is unusable in anything but people faces due to heavy aliasing that ruins videos with stair stepping and moire. They are touting this camera as a professional Imaging tool and that quality is not for production. 1080p 24 looks much better but still gets horrible pattern shots like water and striped patterns on clothing and architecture. Moire and other artifacts can ruin hours of work. If you are buying this camera for the 60p mode you should explore your options further, quality is just not up to par.
To make matters worse the AGC on the audio side has already ruined several shots completely that required the audio with even a hi quality external mic. The sound should have the ability to control audio levels and disable AGC. This should be added in the next firmware, ruining perfectly good quiet shots is not a good advertisement for Canon. Please you need to give us audio controls of some kind this is something that hinders creativity. A separate audio recorder just makes for pointing the Canon problem with AGC even more and adds several steps and problems to the recording process.
On the positive side the flash control, viewfinder and speed are phenomenal. The video can be great if carefully set up to avoid the pitfalls of the down sampling and can produce fantastic results. The ergonomics are great but expect to get tired with such a heavy camera, it really starts to bog you down with fast glass, it will be quite heavy.
If this camera had moire under control in video, AGC disabling with audio level control and 12 or 14 instead of 18MP it would have been a perfect camera.
Audio can be fixed by firmware, please Canon make the right thing!
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: noisy, audio gain control, moire aliasing in video, no af once video starts, too many megapixels kills dynamic range

Canon did it right

This is my third digital camera. For six months, I searched for the right DSLR to meet my needs and found it in the new 7D. I’m as excited about owning this camera as when purchasing my first 35mm SLR more than 50 years ago.
This is a shooters camera; a pro camera with a C processor giving the photographer the ability to manipulate functions as required when confronted with various shooting situations. Construction and image qualities are excellent. Grouping of controls is convenient and easy to find by finger touch. The menu system, for me, is intuitive designed around the way I think. You can talk endlessly about the 7D’s attributes; however, at this point, have found Canon’s entire long list of features and descriptions to be true.
Learning the 7D’s system is enjoyable. I’m a general photographer (people, places, events.) Having exposed over 3,000 images with this camera, I continually find new and creative ways for using it in all types of lighting environments.
I’m hard pressed to find faults with the 7D, other than, maybe, the battery life or a bit noisy. However, this doesn’t affect performance.
Would I recommend the 7D? You bet, for anyone wanting to take their photographic work to another level.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Solid Operation, easy to use
