A great DSLR

The Canon 7D is the DSLR that I have been hoping Canon would make. It has a better weather sealed body than their other APC cameras had. It has 100% viewfinder, a large bright LCD screen that can be read in sunlight, an AF tracking system that I have longed for, good ISO low light performance, wireless off camera flash system built into the camera. I could go on, but the specs are there for you to read on the website. All of this is in an affordable package instead of a heavy 5K pro camera. I am loving it & taking some of my best photos ever. Sports, wildlife, & fast moving kids & grandkids are reasons to buy this camera. I have had mine for over a month & I am looking forward to years more with this camera.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, good battery life

Firmware Update?!
on April 11, 2010

Like i tell everybody that asks about my 7D... these new DSLRs are changing the video capture game forever... the only gripe i have about this camera is the fact that they haven't upgraded the firmware for the audio... to have manual controls like the 5D's would be nice... im sure they will have it coming out soon...right Canon?... also it runs alittle hot... otherwise i love the camera... (cameras previously used are RED 4k, HVX, HD-110u, 5DM2, EX-1, and i love the 7D.)
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, its a canon ;)
Cons: needs upgrade for manual audio, gets really hot during video recording

7D

7D is a great camera and a significant improvement over the 50D.
I have gone through the following Canon's 10D, 20D, 40D, 50D, and now 7D. It's my feeling that the 40D was the greatest leap (maybe because I skipped the 30D) and the best value until the 7D. Though it costs a little more, it is in a different league. I've used the same lenses throughout and tests obviously show the cameras get progressively better.
In my experience the 40D was the easiest camera to pick up without a plan and produce the highest percentage of really sharp pictures. The 7D is close to the 40D for percentage of good shots, but not quite there. The 50D was a fantastic camera, but you had to earn the photos and really think about what were doing to get the high quality pictures out of it.
The 7D lacks the easy mode settings and I miss them dearly. I really liked the 50D mode button layout and wish that would have come forward. I'm all for manual mode abilities, but sometimes I just want to hit the dummy button and push the trigger.
The video in the 7D is great when using a tripod and your subjects stay in place. But it is very hard to keep things in focus, you really have to pre-compose your shots and not have a lot of movement or you notice it later while editting.
I am annoyed that the 7D shares the battery and power accessories of the 5D and not the 10D, 20D, 40D, and 50D since that is what I moved from and had lots of spares.
On the plus side, the 7D uses off the shelf cheap IR pocket remotes and I no longer need the 1800's tech wired shutter remote. However, the camera times out which is incredibly frustrating. I'm all for a power save OPTION, but it should not be the detault. I want to be able to leave the camera on focused on an object waiting for my IR remote to trigger until the camera loses battery or the power supply fails. It's completely annoying and counter productive to have it time out in the remote mode. If I'm setting up something remote, I should be able to sit there forever without having to go back to the camera.
Each camera I've owned listed above would aquire dust spots. Usually removable with following the cleaning procedures and a little blow thingy to clear or diminish the impact. So far the 7D has not had so much as a tiny spec. By now based on my history of use, I should have gotten some dust in there. I don't know if its the improved coating, the improved auto dust cleaning, or blind luck, but the sensor is spotless and I've done nothing special. I am extremely happy with that aspect of the camera.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation
Cons: Missing features/settings, Difficult to use, Heavy/Bulky, Complicated controls/menu

What a camera

Just picked my 7d. What a camera! I have owned the 10d, 20d, 30d and the 40d. I have been very happy with my 5d markii but was looking for the cropped sensor to get the most out of my lenses for outdoor sports shooting. The shutter speed and write time is outstanding. I am nothing more than a hobbyist but the image quality with the 7d is out of this world. I am very pleased with the results of my photos so far after the first week of shooting.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Simple controls/menu, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life

Happy with my upgrade
on November 9, 2009

I upgraded from a 50D which had served me very well for a couple of years as I was traveling to Africa to visit my sister and would be in a game park for two days.
I know the Canon menu system very well and had no problems navigating the 7D menu. I took over 2000 shots mostly in low light conditions and was blown away by how well the 7D performed.
Many of my shots were taken at 3200 ISO with a Canon L series 70-200mm F4 lens and I had to look very hard to find any significant noise. This camera performed flawlessly. Noise at high ISO is much improved over the 50D.
The only con I found was the battery life. It is possible that I just got a "bad" battery with my unit, so I have ordered a replacement.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet
Cons: Short battery life

Love It!

Stepped up from the 450D (XSi) to the 7D as soon as I could and boy am I happy I did! I consider myself a "serious amateur" photographer making no money from my pictures.
I literally got the camera, didn't read the manual immediately and used it the next day to take over 900 shots. Now that I have had time to actually read the manual, I see even better results. There are many more settings to learn and I am looking forward to using the 7D for many years to come. I don't see myself upgrading again for at least 3-4 years.
The only "con" I am listing here is that when recording video with image stabilization turned on, the noise of the IS system comes through in the recording. You can really tell the audio issue when it is a quiet environment but not really if you are recording at a birthday party, etc. where there is a lot of background noise. If it weren't for this, I would have given it 5s across the board.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, easy to use
Cons: i s noise on video recording

Impressive camera

I am so glad I chose this camera instead of the 50D.
Its Quick Control screen performs amazingly well when, in the field, you need to change setups quickly.
I bought the 7D replacing my 30D and I noticed right away it was a huge technological update. I am so impress. I bought the kit with the 15-85MM IS USM lens and I am so amazed by the quality of the images. My friends quickly noticed the picts taken by this camera. Hopefully Canon will produce the lens hood for this lens. It's a shame does not come with it, considering a pricey lens.
Still need to go throughout half the instruction manual though but I found is worth if you want to get a good performance
Another spec I was quite impressed with was the in-camera correction for those dark corners in pictures taken with the 15-85mm IS lens. Just register the lens using the register function and they are gone!!!
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

Excellent Camera, Excellent Value

I purchased the EOS 7D after exhaustive research. I read every website and article I could find on digital SLR cameras. I narrowed the field down to the 7D and 5D. I looked at feature comparisons and since my work doesn't require a full frame sensor camera, the 7D won out. Even with the full frame sensor, the 5D doesn't have all of the features of the 7D. Learning to use the camera has been a blast. My wife and I have used Canon still and video cameras for years for work and travel, and once you learn the basic logic, shooting is easy (like computer OS's, each manufacturer has their own logic). The image quality is excellent. I shot some photos at a family function just after getting the camera. People complemented me on the photo quality and by the end, everyone wanted copies. Low light shooting is magnificent and it is one of the best cameras I have used in lower light. I have been using the battery grip with two batteries and have yet to run out of power during a full day of shooting. Make sure to get the biggest UDMA CF card you can find, you will be glad you did, especially if you shoot RAW and JPEG simultaneously.
Overall, I highly recommend this camera. If you do not have to have a full frame sensor, then this is THE camera for you. It is truly the best hardware purchase I have ever made.
Pros: high end features, great accessories, great burst shooting
Cons: none!
