My best camera in 25 years

I have been shooting high school sports and theater for over 25 years. The 7D does great low light photography. I can shoot night sports and basketball with out a flash. The photos at 6400 iso are good enough for professional publication. The buttons on the back are bigger and easier to use than the ones on my EOS1D. The 18 megapixel card gives great detail at 400 iso. I haven't had to shoot in RAW with the 7D because the jpegs have so much detail. I use the vertical hand grip to make it easier to hold when using a telephoto lens. The battery last a very long time.
Pros: good battery life, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu

Just Buy It!

Just buy it! You have read the reviews...But until you buy, own and start using the EOS 7D as your main unit you will not understand what all the HYPE is about. The EOS 7D did not get the Awards, Accolades and Favor of myriads of World Renown Photographers without being a levels above the rest and classed in a standard almost to its own.
You can argue negatively about anything, say for instance some say the Sun is dangerous and can cause various forms of skin cancer and no one should be exposed unprotected to it. The fact of the matter is, without the Sun, life as we know it on Planet Earth would not exist. There are people on this planet who have never used sunscreen and are in the Sun everyday for prolonged periods of time and have never had skin issues. Life goes on.
What I'm trying to say is...There is no need to get into the technicalities of what this finely crafted Jewel can do, why, because there are more than enough reviews that have defined in persuasive detail the more than capable abilities of the EOS 7D...Just Buy It!
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: n/a

Soft Focusing

I had been waiting for some time to upgrade from the 20D. What I love about the 7D: 1) Frame rate absolutely rips - so great for skiing, paragliding, wakeboarding and other instances that involve high buffer rates - such a great improvement over the 20D for me. 2) We Canon folks can finally start to use and control off camera flashes from the camera itself - so awsome. Up until this point I've been using manual control flashes from other manufacturers and running them in manual mode. I'm halfway thinking about buying a second Canon flash now - but for now when traveling light and I just need a single fill flash I just throw in an old 420EX which is great. 3)Build - it feels solid in my hand, I love it's size. 4) The batteries last forever, even when it is cold outside.
What I'm bummed out about: 1) Mega-pixel race - 18MP?? Why? Keep it around 12 so that I can deal with smaller files in post process and to help resolve bummed out point 2 2) Although world's ahead of the 20D, the 7D is far noisier at ISOs above 400 than expected. 3) Viewed at 100% and shot through all my L lenses the images are often a little soft. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I know of other 7D users who have noted the same thing.
Frame rate is fantastic, build is solid, Canon is starting to head in the right direction with off camera flash control functions.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation
Cons: noisy, soft focus

Well this is a great camera. I was worried at 1st about diffraction and how it effects the sharpness of the pixels. I'm not a pixel peeper but from what I see it's fine. Great image quality even at high iso's up to 4000. I read a whole bunch of reviews about this camera the good and the bad. Then I decided to buy it. I'm glad that I did. The auto focus is fast and accurate. I shoot action sports and stunt riders on motorcycles. It helps to not worry so much about noise levels when I'm shooting with available light at night. Being able to trigger and control my wireless flashes is a plus. I use radio poppers to widen the range. But I still wish I could sync them wirelessly at high speed without having a st-e2 or 580ex2 as a master. All in all this is the perfect camera for users who want a great build quality dslr with a lot of features that helps make your job more simple.
Pros: quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Poor image quality, Short battery life

Complete disappointment
on August 3, 2011

I've been a Canon user all my life and decided to buy the 7D as a second body based on many glowing reviews. There's always a few naysayers in the bunch so I ignored them and bought the camera anyhow. I cannot tell you how thrilled I was when I opened the box and checked out so many cool new features that were included in this gorgeously made body. Then I started taking photos and the disappointment began. Even at low ISO speeds noise is a problem and even using a tripod I was unable to get sharp photos- every single shot came out "soft". I set up a supposedly lower quality 50D and a 7D under the same lighting conditions at the same exposures and both on tripods and the 50D absolutely crushed the 7D in every aspect. I struggled to love this camera and spent 14 days doing everything I could to try to justify it's purchase. I even read the manual from cover to cover to see if I was missing something but alas I wasn't. It was with great regret and disappointment that I packed the unit back up and returned it to the store for a complete refund. I'll continue using my 5 and 50D's and now I'm very hesitant to try another Canon body. I really want to upgrade my 50 but I guess I'll be waiting a while longer as it still delivers solid shots as a second/back up camera.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Superior build quality
Cons: Poor image quality
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

It's hard to beat the canon EOS 7D!

It s really hard to beat the canon eos 7d. I bought an 60d for a an upgrade for my missed rebel XTI. I liked the 60d, it comes with terrific features specially the swivel screen great for some movie shooters and many more, unfortunatly i am not in videography, i don't really care about the swivel screen, i was about to buy a 50d, but a 60d comes out, i said no the eos 60d will succeed the 50D, and it has almost the same sensor to the 7d and has nice features. I used it for two months because i bought it on november 2010 the day of my birthday, i liked it and gave me good results, unfortunatly there were something i didn't like on the 60d and as an canon Fanboy it s an big downgrade from the EOS 50D, the plastic body makes the hardware cheap and too light, it stays between the T2I and the 7D, bigger than the T2I and smaller the the 7D, but has a good grip, but i don't feel it ergonomically, the build quality is supposed to stay like at least the 50D or the 5d Mark II because Build quality is very important on DSLR, thew 7D is strong, rugged, weather sealed, 7D is even more strong heavier (820G Body only) than 5D mArk2(810G body only) and 50D, the 60D frames rates is awesome, 5D mark II is sad just it's full frame and has more Mega pixels and lack the built of Pop up flash, 50D is a terrific ergonomically, and the frames rates of the 50D is happy, I love shooting action, so i need the huge frames rate, i love a heavy camera but not like the eos 1DS MII or IV ...Seriously I am not rich but i don't have financial issues, i can even purchsase EOS 1DS Mark III, i already returned the canon eos 60D, the same day before i go to bed i gotta purchase an eos the store are open in NYC on sunday. I gotta choose between 5D Mark II and 7D, seriously the 50D is awesome but it going to be archaic soon. 5D Mark II is terrific but the frames rates is slow, i don't care about it's full frame and it's 21 MP, and doesn't have built on pop up flash, it;s more friendly in studio, i gotta shoot outside a lot, i can see some wildlifes, lanscape, actions in the street of NYC,so the 7d can do the job done, it's one of the best canon eos timelines, built quality is superior, rugged, and weather sealed, I already have it, i am thinking getting another one for a back up body. Thanks for reading!
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation

So far its awesome. I love all the new features and I think it was worth the money to upgrade from my 50D. I mostly shoot sports and with the eight frams per second, I don't know how you can go wrong. I have been having a little trouble adjusting for white balance in my home which was not a problem with my 50d. I have flouresant lights. Other than that, the camera is totally awesome. Thanks Canon.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Solid Operation, good battery life
Cons: none

Awesome Value

This is a great camera, and a great value. The AF is a big step in the right direction. It takes a bit of adjusting coming from an XXD line camera due to a more involved menu system, but that's partially due to added features.
The only complaint I have about this is that in video mode there are only pre-set combinations of resolution and frame rate. At 720p you get 60 fps (50fps in PAL mode). Why they couldn't have two independent choices for resolution and framerate, like the photo side has for resolution and compression, is beyond me. I would seriously love to see a firmware upgrade address this.
