Nice improvement over the Tag Reader
on June 27, 2013
Posted by: Anonymous
We received the new LeapReader today and it works great! The only thing you should be aware of is that it is not compatible with some of the older (and out-of-print) Tag books. The software did not let us download or transfer the audio for several of the books that we already had including Handy Mandy, SpongeBob, and Pet Pals Sticker Story Time even though they are listed on the compatibility list in the FAQ under the support page. For books that are not listed in the Connect software (and it only lists the in-print books), it tells you to touch the book you want with the LeapReader and then connect it to the computer. But when we did that with those out-of-print books, it displayed a message saying that those books are not compatible. So you still need to keep your old Tag Reader if you have older books. But it does work with the Tag books that they are still selling.
Pros: Educational, Good for on-the-go play, Fun for kids, Grows with child

While most Tag titles work with LeapReader, please note that some of these titles may not be available on LeapFrog Connect until the end of July. For information on which titles are currently available and which are coming soon, please see: http://www.leapfrog.com/en/pages/support/compatible.html

use your space wisely, 256mb goes as fast as 32mb
on June 28, 2013

I thought that 256mb would take forever to fill since we were upgrading from the old 32mb Tag pen. But the file sizes are much much larger for the same books that we used to fit on our old pen. Additionally, 55 of the 256 is not usable space, so you have only 80% of the memory to use for your files. For example, we fit the entire 4 sets of phonics books on the old style tag pen, minus one. So that took up just around 28mb or so, since a few mb are needed to run the pen's software. On the Leapreader, it takes up approx 70mb (2.5 times the size). With memory card costs lower than they used to be, it would be expected to see more onboard memory to allow for really enjoying all that leapfrog has to offer for the system. Although this is a significant increase in memory over the old version, it is used up just as fast so in a way you aren't able to add much more on here than the old, maybe just a few more things. It's about the equivalent of having 2 tag pens. Knowing the size of the audio files for the original tag pen, I really thought I was going to fit a ton on here and didn't expect to see the drastic jump in file sizes for the same exact books. That really changes things a bit because I was trying to downsize from 2 tag pens to 1 leapreader. Overall, I'm still excited to fit a majority of our books on here but we will still need to keep one of our original tags for the older books and for anything that doesnt fit on the leapreader.
The rechargeable battery is a nice feature. We recently got a frog eye charger which will be great for recharging the leapreader on the go. We played around with the pen for a few minutes and it works fine with our books as well as the new writing books. Just wishing there was audio support for the entire Tag library as most of our books were classics that were recently discontinued.

Great for my struggling readers!

While all my younger kids (ages 3-10) love this product, I like it most for my struggling readers. I love the fact that the pen will "read" the difficult words for my kids. My struggling readers love that they can read the books "all by themselves".
For my strong readers and my 3 year old, they love the games and the interactive portions of the LeapReader.
This is a great product at a great value!

The LeapReader is amazing!

I bought the LeapReader for my son's 6th birthday because he was always taking my 4 year old daughter's Tag. I love that it has more space on it than the Tag, but I do not like that the files for the books take up more room on the LeapReader than on the Tag. For example the Brave book only took up 2MB of space on the Tag but on the LeapReader it takes up 9MB of space!

LeapReader Reading and Writing

I received this product free from Leap Pad in exchange for my honest review and opinion of the product. I think this is just wonderful! LeapPad did it again! They created a fun and entertaining way to learn to read and write. I love that the pen has 150+ songs and stories stored in its memory! You can use this pen to read or write. The directions are clear and easy to understand. This will definitely help your child learn to read and write!
Pros: Educational, Fun for kids

Outstanding Reading, Writing and Listening Tool
on July 22, 2013

My family loves the Tag reader - and couldn't wait to test out LeapFrog's LeapReader. My five-year-old daughter has been using it for a few weeks now and I think that it is a phenomenal reading and writing tool - and an amazing update to the TagReader. I am most excited about the LeapReader's simultaneous reading and writing guidance. My daughter learned to read and write this past year in Kindergarten, however, she has been writing many of her letters with improper stroke order. The LeapReader's learning paper guides the child with arrows and red x marks to teach proper stroke order. Children are encouraged to first trace letters and then write them on their own via carefully prompted audio. My daughter thinks that handwriting practice is incredibly fun and I have seen her writing improve as a result.
Although my three-year-old son is below the recommend age level, I have been using the LeapReader with him as well. In the "Learn to Write Letters with Mr. Pencil" book, portions of the book work on tracing straight lines (which are the foundation for writing letters). He is doing well with tracing the lines and I have seen his confidence soar. I'm incredibly excited about teaching him to write with the LeapReader. I'm also happy that the LeapReader only writes on LeapReader specific paper, as my son would use it to write on other things (like the furniture), if he were able. The options for Reading the Page, Reading the Entire Story, or sounding out specific words make it the perfect device for siblings of different ages.
We continue to discover cool components in the LeapReader, including a music player and trivia games. The tunes are catchy and incredibly educational (they sound out letters..etc). I have also been able to add audio from our favorite Tag books including The Interactive Human Body, Leap and the Lost Dinosaur and Get Ready for Kindergarten.
The storage capacity is great and the built in rechargeable battery is the greatest improvement. Best of all, I can always count of LeapFrog to facilitate learning in an incredibly fun way. I feel good when my children are using their products because I can clearly see results.
I reviewed the LeapReader free of charge, however all opinions are strictly my own and not influenced by LeapFrog.

My 5-year old LOVES everything about the LeapReader...especially the fact that it really writes. There are so many great books, with hours of fun activities. (I love the special paper!) He's played with this nearly every day since receiving it, so it's definitely a hit! Can't wait to try it on a trip next. I know it will make the car ride move along faster!
