Very Happy With this Scanner!

I am very pleased with this Epson scanner. I have had it a few years and it always does the job and is reliable. I mainly scan documents into PDF and love that it creates multi page PDF files from multiple documents.
I have also used this to scan my grandfather's slides from the 1940's. I am amazed at the wonderful digital pictures I can get from 70 year old kodachrome!
Very impressive. I have had other scanners before but this is a keeper!

I bought the Epson Perfection V600 scanner primarily to scan my wedding photos on medium format negatives. I figured that its purchase price, I would actually save money if I had sent it out to be scanned. The instructions were not that clear as far as setting up the scan, but after I figured not to try a set group scan, I was able to start my first scan and it went easily after that. I was able to play around with the ICE function to get an initial touch up of damaged photos and was amazed at how much it fixed up the photo. I have to try the the 35mm negatives and slides still, but since I have the experience with medium format, it shouldn't be a problem.

Scanner - V600

Scanner is easy to use whether scanning pictures, negatives or text, however, using PhotoShop with this unit can be overpowering and cumbersome. It may be due to the fact that I use WindowsXP platform. My primary use is to scan in items for use on auction sites and it works great for that.

The first project for this scanner was to interpret 70+ year old B&W negatives. Thanks to the ability of this scanner our family photos are now preserved and they appear like they were just taken.

I have had various scanners but upgraded to this one to allow scanning of 120 size film slides as well as 35mm slides in particular. Even thought it did not come with a mask designed in particular for the medium format slide, I found that removing the hinged part from the film holder mask allowed me to scan 3 at a time easily while leaving them in their mount. The software is smooth and easily adjustable for color correction on individual slides among the 3 being scanned. It worked equally well for scanning 4 of the 35mm slides at a time in the supplied mount. Note that slides must be scanned with the inside cover of the lid removed to permit top illumination. This is done by following instructions to simply sliding it out of the tabs on each side of the lid.
Scanning of other documents on the bed are smooth and fast. The bed is larger than letter size so even slightly oversize photos or documents will lay down easily. The cover is articulated to permit it laying down on an open book, if necessary. Lots of options to facilitate anything I have had a need for. Quality is fine, easy to operate, fast, simple saving operations to files. I am totally pleased, especially for the price.

Works with Vista - that was the most important feature for me.
Makes nice scans, creates PDF's, and more.
Does everything I want it to do.
No complaints.
Nice that it can be turned off, too.

Limitations with this Scanner

I had been using an Epson Perfetion 1650 fpr several years with a Windows XP machine and when I went to use it on a newer Windows 7 machine there were no drivers from Epson that would work and I was forced to buy this newer scanner which is OK, but the interface software does not have the easy features of the older machine. For example with the 1650 I could easily change the amount of reduction or magnification and I canot find the same feature with the V600. The V600 also has a poorer operating manual. The scans that I have done with the V600 are certainly OK, but I cannot determine if they are any better than with the older 1650. Is there a test that would make a comparison? I believe that Epson has the obligation to update its drivers when newer opeating systems. This would not be hard, but forcing us to buy the newest model scanner is not good business in the long run..
