I am really enjoying scanning my negatives. I wish there was a manual to help with the fine details but for the most part I can figure it out.

Epson Perfection V600 photo scanner

I was waiting for the scanner as I had over 100 35mm negatives to scan for Roxborough State Park in Colorado. I am a volunteer naturalist and they needed these old negatives scanned and digitized for archival purposes. I was able to scan them all in about four hours at fairly high resolution 2400 dpi. I recommend that you scan fairly high so that if you decide you need a larger print than an 8x10 then you can get a fairly good resolution. I have been using Epson Perfection scanners for over 10 years and I highly recommend them for scanning your slides. They can be printed in color 8x10's with amazing resolution. I haven't tried the ICE program, but I assume it will do ok.

Setup problems

Product works great now that I have the correct driver. I could not get the software to set up properly with the included CD. Also tried downloading from the Epson website and that did not work either. However, when I contacted the help desk at Epson they promptly set me a driver that did work. Have scanned over 200 35 mm slides already and am pleased with results and the interface. I am running Windows 8.1.

V600 Photo Scanner - really nice for the price

If you don't need to scan negatives bigger than medium format, this is a great option, that also will scan normal sized paper documents.
The scanning resolution is good enough to get down to the grain size on my 120 size negatives, no need for better resolution.
The accompanying software is not well documented by my standards, but is easy enough to figure out.
As supplied, this unit can scan 35mm film, slides in 2x2 mounts, and 120 or 220 film. The stock film holders are usable, but I find them finicky, and need to be used carefully to get the film flat.
Each film holder has a pattern of tiny holes at a specific position to tell the scanner & software what sort of film is being scanned, which is great for normal film sizes. Odd frame sizes on normal film widths have not been hard to adjust to.
Odd size negatives on odd size film are a bit of a challenge.
I sometimes have sheet film negatives that are small enough to be illuminated by the scanner, but so far I have not figured out how to do this conveniently. The scanner will scan a wider neg than the neg holders will allow.
A generic film holder "cheater" which would tell the scanner that there is a random sized negative or transparency on the platen, and provide an outline within which the odd size neg needs to be placed, would be great to have. If you shoot "instant" film, then reclaim the negatives, this scanner is a great way to make prints and digital records, but you might lose some neg area if you shoot 4x5.
It would be nice if it was supplied with a holder for 127, 126, 828, 116 and other roll films too - there are plenty of old negatives from these old cameras that need scanning.
The next model up, which will do negatives up to and a little over 8x10 inches, is currently 3x the cost of the V600 - since I hardly ever touch a view camera these days, there was no need to spend the extra money.
Overall, it's a great tool, and most creative amateur photographers shooting 35mm or medium format should not be limited by the V600's capability.
