Epson to the rescue
on April 30, 2016

My trusty old Epson scanner suddenly gave up the ghost after more than 7 years just as a large scanning project was to begin. My new V600 stepped right in. The new software was very similar to my previous version, so there was a minimal learning curve. The scanner lid is 90-degrees from the previious one, giving me more open desk space and bringing the onboard controls closer. The only downside is common to most every scanner of this size, a recessed glass scanning surface. Many times I get early 1900's mounted photographs that are larger than the bed size. This requires multiple scans of a slightly bent object and time spent putting the pieces together. If absolute sharpness is not necessary, the glass from my old scanner comes to the rescue. Wish there was a 4.5 rating!!

Great Scanner... BUT
on October 5, 2016

I have had this scanner for about 2 months. I have scanned about 2500 slides so far and have generally been very satisfied. BUT, occasionally I find one or two vertical lines across the resulting digital picture, on both portrait and landscape pictures. It is most noticeable on slides with a lot of blue sky, or other areas of solid color. I cannot see this on the originals with a jeweler's loop so I think it occurs in the scanner. Perhaps a light leak or reflection? Epson has replaced my original scanner but I continue to see this effect on the new one. So far my solution is to rescan at another time. Does anyone else see this and have a solution?

I bought my scanner about two years ago, when I started a project to scan all of my parent's slides and photos. Most of the slides were ektachrome and the colors had changed over time. I used the "ice" settings to renew the color. It did a fantastic Job!
Over-all, I scanned over 7000 slides and photos, the collection spanned well over 60 years.

Excellent Scanner - But with a few quirks
on January 23, 2021

I bought this primarily because of its ability to scan medium format negatives. I also have the ES-500W for almost everything else. The V600 does an excellent job and its issues can be worked around. No, I don't typically read instruction books, rather, I rely on intuitive software. Sizing medium format film is not so obvious. (Set it under configuration). Since you can put two negatives in the holder well separated, why can't it figure out the size of those negatives? But if you put in a 6x9 (2 1/4 X 3 1/4) negative and it is set for 6x6, it will crop it to 6x6. If you put in two 620 negatives (one strip), it will often scan the first correctly and clip the second to include part of the first (See image example). I think that might be due to a smaller gap between negatives. Does not seem to happen as often with 120 file (larger gap maybe) unless it is very thin. Thin negatives often result in clipping or not finding a negative at all. But, after telling you it can't find a document, it shows the scanned negatives on the normal tab and allows you to select the area to scan. There are two tabs (Normal and Thumbnail). When you want to select/crop negative areas to scan, use the Normal tab. To automatically select image areas, select the thumbnail tab. Clipping only happens in the thumbnail tab.
It seems to have the ability to save setting groups like the 500W has with save and delete buttons. However, I have yet to see how to enable them and consequently, I am changing parameters every time I change film formats. I guess I may need to read the instructions for that if it's in there. This is a fantastic feature on the 500W.
The V600 provides several adjustments when scanning film. Typically, they are all unchecked except for Unsharp Mask. Unsharp mask seems to work well. But sometimes for B&W negatives, it sometimes creates a distorted image especially on edges (See example image). Rescanning with the unsharp option unchecked, corrects this problem. Unfortunately, when you are ready to scan (B&W negatives), it always has this checkbox selected, and so must be unchecked before you scan. On the other hand, the Digital Ice feature, which does a reasonable job of cleaning up scratches and dust, is not checked and must be checked before scanning if you want to use it. Perhaps both of these can be addressed if I figure out how to save a setting group. I have included a combined image showing the use of these options.
On many old color negatives, the color has faded. The Color Restoration feature does a pretty good job of getting it back to the original state (See Example image)
It took me a while to figure this out, but you can scan larger format film as well without using the holder. For example, 65 or 70mm file such as the 116/616 film can be scanned by placing the film directly on the glass. I align it with the white line under the glass since it must align with the light in the top. When you scan the film, it will tell you it cannot find an image, but then allows you to crop from what it scanned (see example image). Although I have not yet scanned 4x5 negatives, I expect you could get most of the image in a scan and merge two scans in Photoshop (or some other software) to complete the image.
Finally, For scanning prints, it works extremely well. I use the 500W for most images, but for small prints that the 500W does not handle (only down to business card size), I can place several prints on the flatbed and the V600 will scan into separate files beautifully.
I have not used this scanner for regular documents, but expect it works well if you only need a single page at a time. Check out the ES-500W if you have much of that type of work to do - it is fantastic.
Despite these little quirks, the V600 is an excellent scanner and very affordable. I would definitely recommend this especially for someone with lots of medium format images to scan.

Almost Pefection

Great scanner! Little pricey considering the glass screen size is 8.5 by 12. Standard Art pads are 9 x 12. Scanning sixty four 9 x 12 illustrations is going to be a challenge.
I would have 5 star this had the glass screen size been a little larger. I cant afford $2000 for a scanner and my work is in art pads, not removable. Cater to the artists!

Just got my V600 Photo Scanner today. Fairly easy to set up, but would really like to have a physical User's Guide in my hands and not on my laptop.

Does not workwill with Windows 11

I bought this Photo Scanner a month ago and have had trouble getting it to work with Windows 11. I downloaded a different diver and crashed my new computer. I am going to install it on my old computer with Windows 10. I'll write another review if I can get it to work.
