Great scanner for the price

I bought this scanner about 2 years ago and have used it heavily doing over 8,000 film scans (mostly 35mm negatives). For the price, I was extremely pleased with this product - I did need to get it replaced at almost a year, but it was under warranty (it was getting a green/red line down each scan). The refurbished one they sent me worked great for about a year and has now started to act up a little. I'm guessing I've probably have used this product more than most people would and not overly upset on this at the price point. Hence the 4 versus 5 stars.
The first thing to learn is to REMOVE the panel on the top cover (it slides off) if you want to scan negatives - the instructions were not very clear on this, but I quickly figured this out.
The ICE for scratch and dust works well - I still spray my film with compressed air before putting it on the flatbed.
The other thing I wish they would have included in the instructions were looking for "Newton Rings" that might show up on some of the scans. At first I thought they were finger prints, but later researched it and it has something to do with the curve of some of the negatives. There are some ways to correct this - the easiest way that I found worked ok was putting the negatives in upside down in the holder (then inverting the picture using the S/W).
I would recommend this to a friend!

MISSING NEGATIVE HOLDERS FROM MANUFACTURER PACKAGING
on August 30, 2018

Bought this from my local photo retailer. Got a decent price, was excited to scan a bunch of 120. Open the box, set it all up - missing the negative holders! The one thing that makes it useful as a film scanner, and it's not there. Retailer didn't have any other V600's as they're on back order, and it will take at least a week to get negative holders shipped. Overall really unsatisfied, but I still can't speak for the quality of the scanner, since, you know, I can't really use it.

Failed after 1 hour of use

Worked for about an hour of scanning film negatives and then started reporting 'No response from scanner' errors. The scanning of regular photos continued to work satisfactorily. But the film negative scanning fails every time.

Does great job with slides and negatives

I bought this scanner exclusively for scanning slides and negatives. It does a great job. The first one I bought developed a blue line through my Ekachrome 6x7cm scans. Microcenter did an exchange with no hassle. New scanner performs as well as the original. Guess I got one that was ready to fail. It took 8 days and 875 scans to fail. I hope this was a quirk!

Great scanner, BUT

Have the V600 about 3 weeks now and it is a superb scanner if you only scan 35mm film strips or 35mm mounted slides. The 120 / 220 film holder is badly designed and useless for mounted slides. The scanner also does not scan 4x5 sheet film. Would not recommend for scanning 120/220 mounted slides or 4x5 film.

Hi glennphoto, the V600's 120/220 film holder is meant only for medium format film strips and not mounted frames. Mounted medium format frames can be placed on the glass, aligned with the center underneath the transparency area. The V600 Photo's transparency area is only large enough for 35mm and 6x20 cm medium format film, but Epson does have professional scanners capable of large format film as well. Kind Regards, Marina – The Epson Team.

Great for money; continuous improvement ideas for 5 stars
on January 14, 2019

I've purchased 2 V600's and scanned over 25,000 photos; I wore the first one out only through developing too many scratches on the glass. This is a great scanner for the money and can handle most of the film types and photos I've run across. For standard point-and-shoot film, its resolution capture is adequate and is my go-to choice (even considering I have a classic film scanner). If the following details were addressed, I would consider it a 5 star scanner for my situation:
1. The 35mm film trays can't hold curled film that well. Badly curled film will touch the glass and cause newton rings. With standard frame sizes, it would be good to have a 35mm film tray that has cross bars between each frame to help flatten the film.
2. It would be great if the 35mm film holders could hold 4 strips of 4 frame film. The tray was designed to hold 2 strips of 6 frames, but almost every 35mm film strip I've come across has been cut in frames of 4. I believe the machine could hold 4 strips of 4 frames, though I could see creating a film holder rigid enough with that large of an opening to be difficult.
3. It would be great it they made an adapter or holder for 110 film and disk film. The machine is capable and I made custom adapters to accommodate these film types.
4. It would be helpful to have a software button to turn on and off the lens lights; this really helps show any dust on the glass to show when and where it needs cleaned.
5. It would be helpful and more productive if the scanner covered the entire glass area. The scan area cuts off about 1/8" on the top and right side, and nearly 1/4" on the left and bottom side. In trying to capture every details of old family photos, this is unacceptable, so the photo has to be positioned manually away from the corners that assist with keeping it straight. It also doesn't allow 4 4x6" photos to be scanned at the same time; the all fit on the glass perfectly, but you lose the edges.
6. Similar to the glass, the auto crop feature seems to crop a bit too much off negatives and photos. I've resorted to selecting all scan areas manually to get every inch of the photo.
7. The color restoration feature is pretty good, but it seems to be slightly heavy on contrast by about 5-8 ticks on the scale. To keep whites from being too bright, and darks being too dark, I typically have to manually widen the exposure scale ever so slightly.
I would recommend this to a friend!

If only Epson had a modern driver

none of my Adobe product will connect due to no 64 bit driver. TWAIN doesnt seem to work either. Epson scan software is clunky at best and becomes unbearable quickly. wish i would have known this before i purchased. the scan that it does are pretty decent as i would expect but, the software makes me cringe to the point i would rather use an app on my phone.

Scanning 35mm Slides and More
on March 8, 2019

I bought this over a year ago and finally got around to doing what I need to do, which is start scanning a few thousand 35mm slides taken from about 1970 to 1990. After studying the manual and experimenting, I settled on a set of scanning parameters and decided to use the TIFF file format for master copies. I used 24 bit color, 2400 dpi, unsharp mask: low, color restoration, and dust removal:high. The result is I scan 4 slides at a time in the holder provided. Scan takes 2 min and 15 sec for 4 slides and the result is TIFF files of 18 MB each with slide resolution of 2040 X 3070. DIGITAL ICE was not used because of much longer scan times with little benefit because I was very careful to remove most dust and was very careful with cleanliness.
