extremely frustrating

After only two scans, the Epson Scan stops working: "Cannot cummunicate with the scanner. Make sure the scanner is on, correctly setup and connected with no errors indicated. For detailed information, see Solving Problems in the User's Guide."
An Epson guide suggests going to EPSON Scan Settings, but I can't because I got another error message: "Information for scanners that support EPSON Scan Settings is not installed. EPSON Scan Settings will close."
I've uninstalled, installed, uninstalled, installed .... many many times, restarted the scanner and my computer many times, but it still doesn't work. I checked the online forums and realize this is a common problem for many users, I tried all the tips but none worked out. Since the problem has been there for so long, why can't Epson do something?
Will have to return it. Already wasted too much time and energy.

What Is Going On

I just bought this scanner and unpacked it. I continually received a message stating the scanner is unable to communicate with my Surface Pro. When it finally did scan, it scanned approximately 5 photos and then began to scan tiny little photos. It will not allow me to use the scan button on the scanner itself because "it cannot communicate". I have to use the scan icon on my desktop.

Usable despite poor features

I bought this product because it was one of the few scanners on the market capable of handling 2 3/4" slides. It does that, though awkwardly because the slide holders provided aren't really designed for that size. The software user interface has a dozen or more glaring design defects; it took me a while to find workarounds, but I finally did. And the bundled photo editing software, ArcSoft Photo Studio 6, is pathetic, but that's OK because I already had something better.

You never know what it might do or why it did it

After just receiving the product I wanted to start using it. That dimmed rapidly. When I tried to open the cover it didn't open with what I thought was enough force, which shouldn't be much. I lifted the V600 up by pulling on the cover. I remembered reading a review from somewhere that mentioned trouble with getting the cover open so I was hesitant about applying too much force for fear of breaking the cover. Not finding that review and having had the V600 for about a week and still not having used it, I said I was going to get the cover open even if I did break it. I got it open by holding the body of the V600 with one hand and pulling on the cover with the other. I had to pull a lot harder than should ever been required. Every opening after that was done as expected. The initial opening caused me to think the cover was held shut by some sort of a bonding substance and once that bond was broken the cover opened easily.
It takes a while to learn how to use the V600. It took me longer than necessary to figure out why it wouldn't turn on and I still don't know why. After using it for one day I tried to turn it on the next day and it wouldn't turn on and all I had done the night before was turn it off. After much investigating, the switch, the cords, and the power supply, it finally came on and I have no idea why. But that is only the first part of the action mysteries demonstrated to me by this scanner.
Hoping to eradicate all the concerns that follow after experiencing a couple of these problems I uninstalled and reinstalled the software. That didn't seem to help. I was using a Windows 10 application.
I was prescreening/scanning only 35mm slides to my computer so repetitive action was the norm for me but not the scanner. It became a guessing game as to what I would see for a scanned product.
There were times that a black line border would show on any edge of the of scanned product; never always in the same location or size. I would rescan the slide and get the same black border line results no matter which program I used or how I positioned the slide until....
The last day I used the scanner a reproduction had this black border line across the top so I said what would happen if I turned it upside down? It scanned okay so I found the slide that I could not scan correctly from the day before, no matter what I tried, and, who knows why, this time it scanned correctly.
There were times I would attempt to scan and I would get an error message that the scanner could not communicate with the computer. Turning the scanner on and off three times seemed to cure this problem for that scan. This problem was a random happening.
There were times I would attempt to scan a rack of slides and see them copied upside down or turned left or right from the way I had placed them into the slide holder.
Sometimes using color restoration made the orange sunrise or sunset show as green so I didn't know whether to use color restoration or not so I would decide after reviewing the scanned product.
When the scanner operated properly it scanned slides in a very rewarding way. Showing the scanned product to be what I desired. Some of these slides are 50 plus years of age so I used the Digital ICE Technology option for many of these slides.
If one looks at the cost for the V600 it might seem to be an almost acceptable trade off for the inconsistent results, however, before I fully believe that I am going to give the Epson V600 back to the store where I purchased it and think about it. I have about 10,000 slides I want to digitize. I want a scanner that works properly all the time or at least until the scanning light burns out.
And the scanner I had might have worked properly all the time because it might be more a problem with the software and not the scanner. The scanner works the same way all the time; responding to the information sent to it. The only thing that differs is the information sent to the scanner.
Yes, I will probably buy another and see how that new one operates. At least I have already been exposed to many of the nuances of the V600 so the disappointment might not be viewed as shocking.
As I tell anyone or everyone, "I am perfect. Aren't you?" Nothing is and it is how we accept imperfections that matters.

Great scanner - dust under the glass though

The V600 worked great right out of the box to a Windows 10 Dell laptop using the USB C dongle. No issues. I noticed dust under the glass though. Not sure how to get that out without taking it apart.

Fortunately I have superior VueScan software and not dependent on Epson or Silverfast. Still no excuse for lazy software effort by Epson.

Happy with the Perfection V600

Verified Purchase:Yes
My primary use of the scanner is film negatives but I have also used it for old photo prints and it works very well on all of this. The settings in the Professional mode are all very useful and easy to manage once the user's manual is studied.

EPSON V600 PHOTO SCANNER
on November 6, 2010
Posted by: POOH BEARS
from STOUGHTON, WI.
LAST MARCH, (2010) WE PURCHASED THE V600. WE NEEDED A HIGH QUALITY SCANNER AS WE, MY WIFE AND I, ARE CREATING A PHOTO LIBRARY FOR BOTH SIDES OF OUR FAMILIES.
SOME OF THE PHOTOS THAT WE HAVE SCANNED DATE BACK TO THE EARLY 1900'S. ONE OF THE MAIN FEATURES THAT WE LIKE ABOUT THE V600, AND TO US WAS NECESSARY, IS THAT IT WORKS WITH MANY SIZES OF NEGATIVES. THE V600 COMES WITH HOLDING TRAYS FOR 35MM SLIDES, OR 35MM FILM STRIPS, 2 1/4" SQUARE NEGATIVES OR STRIPS. PLUS IT WILL SCAN ANY PRINT OR DOCUMENT UP TO 8.5" X 11". TO THIS POINT, WE HAVE ENTERED APPROXIMATELY 4,500 SLIDES/NEGATIVES/PHOTOS INTO OUR LIBRARY USING THE V600.
OUR COMPUTER SYSTEM IS A NEW (FEB. 2010) MAC, CURRENTLY RUNNING SNOW LEOPARD OS X 10.6.4. THE V600 SETUP AND STARTUP WAS ALMOST FLAWLESS. I DID NEED TO MAKE ONE CALL TO THE EPSON TECH SUPPORT TEAM. THEY HELPED ME AND I WAS UP AND RUNNING IN 15 MINUTES.
SO FAR, THE V600 HAS NOT FALTERED AND WE STILL HAVE A FEW MORE THOUSAND PHOTOS TO GO BEFORE WE ARE DONE WITH THIS LARGE FAMILY PROJECT. THERE ARE MANY OTHER EXCELLENT FEATURES WITHIN THE V600, WHICH YOU CAN READ ABOUT IN THE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION.
WE FEEL WE HAVE MADE A GOOD INVESTMENT WITH THIS PURCHASE.
