Perfection V600

The scanner works very well once I figured it out. I am disappointed with the way the manual is put together (I just see various links - almost a frequently asked questions listing). Guess I'm "old school" and like to see a manual.

Epson V600 Scanner

I purchased this scanner primarily because I had a large number of medium format negatives I needed to scan.( Previously, I had the V300, and it worked well, but couldn't handle the larger format negatives.) I have scanned almost 700 negatives so far, mostly B & W, 220, but I have also scanned a number of negatives of a format used from 1899-1984, which do not fit the holder supplied with the scanner. (The negatives are 1/4" wider than the supplied frame will hold.) I ended up devising a crude way to position the negatives directly on the glass bed, and got surprisingly good, clear, results, even though the edges of some of the negatives were slightly curled up. If I get to the point where I want to make large prints, I will make something to hold the negatives flat, and I will re-scan.
So far everything has worked well for me, whether doing 35mm slides/film strips, or the larger format film negatives, plus copying photographic prints and text items.

I can't say enough good things about this scanner. It is super easy to use, fast, and the results are amazing. I had it scan an old photo of my Mom when she was 20. The photo was dark and small. Imagine my surprise when I saw my Dad sitting on the chair next to my Mom in the scanned photo. The color restoration, and photo enhancement lightened the photo so both people could be seen! I have scanned slides, and film, as well as old photos. I've even made pdf files. I couldn't be happier. This suits all my needs and is worth every penny I spent.

What I've really needed.

With a large collection of 35mm slides, I've wanted some way to make digital copies of them - both to preserve them as well as to make prints of those I cherished the most. The Epson Perfection V600 Photo really fits the bill. It is easy to work. The quality of the resolution is great. Its ability to restore some of the faded images is an addded bonus.

I purchased this to replace an HP Photosmart. The difference is remarkable. This is easy to use, produces quality reproductions, and no warm up period.

V600 Photo Scanner

Just set it up today, will try to come back in a few months - after the hundreds of pictures & documents needing to be scanned are completed - to give a more thorough review. For now, the unit is extremely easy to set up and get started.
I would definitely recommend this unit to anyone for ease of use and functionality.
I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 for two reasons:
1. It should have been made to allow scanning of legal, or longer, sized documents instead of a max of only 8.5x11 without having to purchase an automatic document feeder. (perhaps it does, but haven't found how yet...)
2. Also, because of the difficulty I initially had scanning a document. I ended up using the picture type instead of text/line art type as it wouldn't allow me to scan the item in PDF. It's very possibly due to my inexperience and will report back later to let you know.
The photos scanned came out great, as did a newspaper article with color pictures and a document - once the PDF issue was resolved. Was able to use the ICE technology on the pictures (one color, one sepia tone) to eliminate dust that really wasn't all that visible initially, rotate and save the clipping, see the document in color, greyscale and B&W to compare the clarity of each - the preview is a great feature and rotation of the picture to right side up before scanning is available.
At this point, I am very happy with my purchase.

cumbersome for old 120 negative scanning
on December 6, 2010

The V600 machine is a good overall scanner - it comes with slide and negative holders for 35mm and 120 film - I bought it for scanning old medium format negatives since our old Epson scanner would only do 35mm film and single 35mm slides.
The standard settings for 120 film include 6x6 (cm), 6x7, 6x8 and 6x9. In professional mode, with old square 120 negatives (many from an old Hawkeye Kodak Brownie camera my parents owned) the preview would show one frame properly identified and all subsequent frames offset. Each subsequent frame had to be individually selected from the Normal preview. This is a tedious, time consuming process. The images are great though. It's a trip through time to see prints from negatives that are 50 to 65 years old that my parents and grand parents took.
I have better results in general using the dust removal option over the ICE option. ICE can add odd things especially in shadowed areas.
I also have an odd negative size, in strips, that is in between the 35mm and 120 film size for which no holder exists. I may have to buy a custom or resizeable negative holder for these.
I'll submit more when I have more experience with it.
