Good quality for the price

So far, I've scanned one very large print, 1 negative, and about 1200 slides. The quality seems good for the price although I haven't used alternative scanners to compare. The slides ranged back to nearly 70 years old. Most of them retained their color although some have become discolored and some were overexposed to begin with. For the slides, following another reviewers recommendations, I used 48-bit color, 2400 dpi resolution and checked the unsharp mask and Color Restoration boxes. I have mixed emotions about the color restoration. Sometimes it improved things and sometimes I was dissatisfied with the result. In general, I felt that with the box unchecked, there was too much blue, but with it checked, there was too much yellow. But, for the most part, I left it checked. I also tried higher dpi settings but found there was no increase in quality of the result and it just made larger files. Overall, I think you get really good quality scans for a good price. It does take up a fair amount of desk space. I also had some trouble with it dropping communications with my computer so that I had to restart the software and turn off and on the scanner. Mildly irritating but it could be because it was going through my docking station.

Does the Job

I bought this scanner because I had a lot of very old photographs from the 1800's that I wanted to save on my computer. It took time to learn what setting to use, but I was very satisfied with the scanned picture.
I have many photo negatives which are over sized and the scanner doesn't do the job that I want. It breaks up the picture in two images. I still have to work on the best way to scan these negatives.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Good scanner but I'll be upgrading to v800 or 850

I'm scanning my old negatives but after multiple back and forth with support I had to conclude that this was just not the one for me. Its cumbersome to scan because you have to preview before every full scan (why would they not make that a one-step??) and the front buttons only do very basic scans and believe it or not, do not do a preview so you can't use them for anything but full page scans.
The software does lots of things (ICE, descreening, etc) but i found that if you do more than 1 thing, the ICE (dust/scratch) removal does not work. So I just used ICE.
Its hard for me to say if the scan quality of the v650 is good. I am not sure if my expectations were too high but I was hoping to see super sharp and clear reproductions of the original photo - much like I see when I zoom in on a photo taken from a newer digital camera. But I'm not sure if it was the 20 year old negatives or if its just inherent in scanning or if it was the hardware but I definitely did not get the sort of quality I was hoping for. When zoomed out, it looks ok - but again, I was [maybe naively] hoping for me.
After finding the deficiencies with this printer, I found the SilverFast software and was hopeful about using that but found out that the v600 does not support the 64bit 10.14 Mac OS and unfortunately I already upgraded.
It would seem to me that Epson has put the v600 out to pasture and is just milking it. The v800/850 are supporting 10.14 Mac OS and come with the SilverFast software. I suspect the Epson software will be identical to what I got with the v650 which looks like 10 year old app that they do minimal maintenance on in order to keep selling old hardware. That's i a little bit disappointing.

Film scanning is more time consuming than print scanning because the process does require preview scans and more settings for enlargements and using functions like Digital ICE. The Perfection V600 Photo is a current product and supported for Mac OS 10.14 with its drivers, but since SilverFast is a third-party driver that is not bundled with the V600, Epson does not have influence on if/when an OS 10.14 version will be released. Since you do have the SilverFast software, once it is released, you should be eligible for an update through their support site. Best scanner for copying 35mm slides

I tried another scanner to copy vintage slides. I sent it back since it made whites look yellow. This Epson does a perfect job and is very fast in copying 4 at a time.

I watched a utube tutorial on how to scan photos and the screens didnt look like the ones on the down loaded driver and utilities software what gives

Unfortunately the product havs been having problems. it worked great for 3 months with minor problems, but now it started having problems every hour. I need to close everything and re start everything for it to work. Not a practical program unfortunately
