Epson Perfection V600 Photo Scanner

Had this one for a couple of years. At some point in the software upgrade process, certain options became non-functional, such as all the buttons on the front of the unit. Those buttons do absolutely nothing at this point. Additionally, the 'scan to pdf' option uses the barest of options, meaning that if you want to scan 10 pages, you end up with 10 different pdf files. While all this worked when I originally bought the unit, they rapidly failed within the year. Does do reasonable quality document scans if you launch the app in it's most basic form.

Dead in less an a year

Enjoyed all the features of this scanner. Used them all. The negative scanning is a slow process - but fine light use. And that's what this scanner got - light use. And not dead, dead, dead.

Doesn't appear to work and support doesn't either. Not happy. Just purchased this and it appears to be so outdated it doesn't work with Windows 10.

Excellent Scanner - But with a few quirks

I bought this primarily because of its ability to scan medium format negatives. I also have the ES-500W for almost everything else. The V600 does an excellent job and its issues can be worked around. No, I don't typically read instruction books, rather, I rely on intuitive software. Sizing medium format film is not so obvious. (Set it under configuration). Since you can put two negatives in the holder well separated, why can't it figure out the size of those negatives? But if you put in a 6x9 (2 1/4 X 3 1/4) negative and it is set for 6x6, it will crop it to 6x6. If you put in two 620 negatives (one strip), it will often scan the first correctly and clip the second to include part of the first (See image example). I think that might be due to a smaller gap between negatives. Does not seem to happen as often with 120 file (larger gap maybe) unless it is very thin. Thin negatives often result in clipping or not finding a negative at all. But, after telling you it can't find a document, it shows the scanned negatives on the normal tab and allows you to select the area to scan. There are two tabs (Normal and Thumbnail). When you want to select/crop negative areas to scan, use the Normal tab. To automatically select image areas, select the thumbnail tab. Clipping only happens in the thumbnail tab.
It seems to have the ability to save setting groups like the 500W has with save and delete buttons. However, I have yet to see how to enable them and consequently, I am changing parameters every time I change film formats. I guess I may need to read the instructions for that if it's in there. This is a fantastic feature on the 500W.
The V600 provides several adjustments when scanning film. Typically, they are all unchecked except for Unsharp Mask. Unsharp mask seems to work well. But sometimes for B&W negatives, it sometimes creates a distorted image especially on edges (See example image). Rescanning with the unsharp option unchecked, corrects this problem. Unfortunately, when you are ready to scan (B&W negatives), it always has this checkbox selected, and so must be unchecked before you scan. On the other hand, the Digital Ice feature, which does a reasonable job of cleaning up scratches and dust, is not checked and must be checked before scanning if you want to use it. Perhaps both of these can be addressed if I figure out how to save a setting group. I have included a combined image showing the use of these options.
On many old color negatives, the color has faded. The Color Restoration feature does a pretty good job of getting it back to the original state (See Example image)
It took me a while to figure this out, but you can scan larger format film as well without using the holder. For example, 65 or 70mm file such as the 116/616 film can be scanned by placing the film directly on the glass. I align it with the white line under the glass since it must align with the light in the top. When you scan the film, it will tell you it cannot find an image, but then allows you to crop from what it scanned (see example image). Although I have not yet scanned 4x5 negatives, I expect you could get most of the image in a scan and merge two scans in Photoshop (or some other software) to complete the image.
Finally, For scanning prints, it works extremely well. I use the 500W for most images, but for small prints that the 500W does not handle (only down to business card size), I can place several prints on the flatbed and the V600 will scan into separate files beautifully.
I have not used this scanner for regular documents, but expect it works well if you only need a single page at a time. Check out the ES-500W if you have much of that type of work to do - it is fantastic.
Despite these little quirks, the V600 is an excellent scanner and very affordable. I would definitely recommend this especially for someone with lots of medium format images to scan.

Great for scanning negatives

I bought the Perfection V600 for one purpose. I like to make photo books on-line of our vacations. This is easy now with digital cameras. I decided to go back and make photo books of our family vacations when our kids were small, in the 1980's and 90's. There are literally thousands of photos, and they are all on film. I needed to scan all those negatives. I learned quickly it would be most cost effective to buy a scanner, rather than pay a photo service to scan them all. After reviewing several scanners, I selected the V600. I have completed scanning the negatives of one of our trips. I am not disappointed with my choice. I played around a little with the dpi and compression ratio to get the jpegs sized the way I wanted. The results have been even better than I expected. The auto mode worked just fine. The colors and picture quality were excellent, even without using the color restoration option. It took about 1 minute 10 seconds per negative to scan, which I consider to be reasonable. I have tried the photos on my on-line photo book site. They look great. I was able to expand a single image to cover two pages of a 12 by 12 book, that would be a 12 by 24 image. I was concerned about this. I also made a photo CD to play a slideshow on our TV. All the photos looked like they were taken by a digital camera. All in all, I have been very sarisfied with the V600.

Having long looked for a reasonably priced 6x6 scanner I finally came across the V600 which I purchased a little more than a week ago. I have already scanned as many as 300 color & black and white negatives as well as a few color and B&W photos of various size. Thus far there has been nothing to fault with this scanner. Easy setup, quick learning curve and quality results. Considring the price, it can't be beat. Two thumbs up, as the saying goes!

For a while had in mind to scan my old pictures, I inherited my fathers albums after his death. Many family members come to me for pictures so with this machine I am able to scan, but with excellent quality. It's very easy to use, and happy with it. I like about it is that if you just want to scan quickly you can, if you want complex scanning and sophistication you got it. I go with the simple and its great.

Epson Perfection V600 Scanner

This product was easy to install and works great. I use it only for photos. I've been wanting to scan my old photos but my all-in-one was just too slow and only did one photo at a time. This scans up to 5 photos at a time and is fast. It scans fast and is immediately ready for the next scan. No warming up. You do have to make sure they are separated well or it will scan them as one. it scans fast and has good quality. You can also manually pick how you want to the photo to be fixed as well. I love it and would recommed it.
