Scanner works great, but....

I'm quite happy with the quality of the scans and the ease of operations. However, I had problems installing the Epson Scan software. After several attempts I went to Epson's website and discovered that I needed to download software that is compatible with the Mac OS X Mavericks operating system. After that, it was easy.

Epson Perfection V600 Photo Scanner is Perfect

I purchased the Epson V600 so I could scan numerous black & white & color negatives into my digital photo collection. After a quick trip through the instructions, I was quickly & easily scanning negatives onto my hard drive. Scan times depend greatly on how detailed you want the scan, but I can scan 24 negatives at a reasonable detail in about 10 minutes. The 1st part of the process gives you thumbnails that allow you to discard any photos you don't want, and then do the detailed scanning. I am scanning negatives that we taken in the early 70s and they are coming out as good as the day they were taken. This scanner is perfect for what I do!

I have been using my V600 to scan a very diverse array of images: color slides, Negatives (both black & white and color) and a variety of prints in both black & white and color. I have examined my originals and the scans under high power magnification and am delighted with the fidelity of the scans! The interfaces with Photoshop work perfectly as well.
I was very pleased with an earlier Epson scanner; this one was a great upgrade!

All-in-one Scanner

Pros The Scanner works as specified. It is easy to use on photo prints & documents.
Cons Instructions are Poor and not complete. The Film Holders & Slide Holders are poorly made and could break easily if not very careful. Some of these items should be made better as this scanner is not an inexpensive scanner.

Software Installation

I was hoping to streamline the software install by installing only what I needed or wanted. I dont need all the automatic restoration features as I do it all manually. I would have liked to have descriptions of all the different packages so I could choose what I wanted to install.

Long-term review - 14 years of superb reliability

This scanner has been in heavy use in my office, since I bought it new in 2009. I paid about 1/2 the price for which it is selling today (2023).
It always performed flawlessly until very recently, when the scanning speed started to slow down.
I know exactly where the problem is - the grease on the Rail Cylinder hardens, and sticks, instead of lubricating - perfectly normal after so many years. I've serviced this before on customers' scanners, and it is a common ageing symptom.
I disassembled the scanner, and did an ageing service - Replaced the old Consumer-grade 85°C capacitors on the PCB with new 105°C Industrial-grade units; and removed the old sticky grease from the Rail cylinder, and spread a thin layer of industrial-grade synthetic lubricant.
Problems solved, reassembled, and my V600 returned to flawless fast and precise scanning. I expect no problems for at least the next 15 years.
Well done Epson for making equipment which lasts and is repairable, especially after 14 years of heavy use.

It does the job

I have an Epson Workforce 2540 all-in-one and also the Perfection V600. There was very little difference in the scan quality between these two scanners. Color correction for accuracy is needed with both scanners. I was not impressed with Digital Ice because it created pixelation in some areas of the photos and took out some details as if they were dust. I do all of my editing in Photoshop Elements and don't need Digital Ice anyway. If you don't have a scanner, then the V600 is a good product at a good price. If you already have an Epson scanner, then there is no need to buy the V600 unless you need higher resolution and the ability to scan negatives and slides. Epson makes quality products and I have owned several Epson printers and scanners over the years.

Very good scanner. Fast, beautiful scans. DO NOT purchase for the Digital ICE feature. Totally worthless. Introduces artifacts when used.
