Disappointed

My V600 does a good job on simple tasks like scanning photo prints and magazine pics. However, I wanted it to scan artwork done on tinted charcoal paper. It does a very poor job on this. My frustration is that Epson has failed to publish any info on how to use the V600 features to make corrections, so you are left to trial and error (mostly error). My clue should have been the free copy of Photoshop Elements included. With CS6 I can correct most of the problems, but I wish Epson would see fit to share some of its info on how to use it's software effectively.

MAC LION users -- beware

I did a fair amount of research before purchasing this product. When I opened the Perfection V600, I found a note indicating that MAC OS X-7 users should not insert the software CD. I was directed instead to the user support website. I was able to download a driver and scan photos using MAC's image capture. I was also able to copy Adobe Photoshop Elements from a second CD. However, EPSON's software (EasyPhoto and Photo Fix) are not available, and there is also no access to DIGITAL ICE features. EPSON support was unable to tell me when an update would be available and directed me instead to contact the other software providers and Apple. The scanner seems to work well, but there is insufficient software support for the LION system at this time.

My wife wanted to scan old photos and negatives. Purchased the V600 and it's fantastic! Photography is a hobby of mine and I'm very pleased with the output from very old negative film, the speed, and flexibility of the scanning software. A great value

As with any product purchased for a singular purpose, you want it to satisfy your needs, both ergonomically and functionally. This unit is lacking in location of on/off switch and clear precise cropping lines to satisfy my needs. Others may find this of little bother. I like to quickly crop within documents to extract only what I need. You have to go through too many steps to achieve this. Other than these small concerns, the Epson is useful and I would, grrrr, recommend it to others (after they upgrade functions).

It was installed last evening. It is directly hooked up to my iMac and the power.
I can not get it to scan alone or through Photoshop.
I'm perplexed.

technology needs to improve, but a good product

I have been holding off buying a scanner to transfer my 15 albums of family photos until now - this scanner is rated pretty high by the pundits. If you are an instant gratification person, keep waiting for the technology to improve and become faster. A 4x6 color print takes about a minute to scan and transfer to your computer file, and that includes the time it takes for the software and scanner to "recharge" for the next scan. Also, the software is somewhat haphazard: the scanner sometimes loads the picture sideways or upside down, or adds unnecessary white space around the scanned photo. This means you need to use your photo editing software (like iPhoto) to format the pictures after the photo is transferred to your computer for about 70% of the pictures. So, it is not a seamless, convenient plug and play type of product. My 2000 photo transfer project will be taking more than the month or so I was expecting to invest: sigh . . . I hope my kids appreciate the effort! Comparing the photo to the scanned file: the original photo is visibly sharper than the scanned image, so do not expect an identical copy. However, the price is very good for this product. If you are accepting the recommendation from the pundits who monitor these products as gospel, then you're not going to find anything significantly better than this, so just be patient and accept what is offered. Namaste.

Resolution

Be careful if buying the V600. You may not be getting what you think. The specs indicate the device is capable of 6400x9600 dpi. However when I tried to scan a 5 x 7 photo at 4800 dpi, I discovered there is an unpublished scan size limitation of 21000 x 30000 pixels. Hence, scanning at 4800 dpi resulted in an error. The only way to achieve high resolution is with small originals ( 1 in ). Epson tech support attributed the limitation to the Epson Scan software. If you need small scan output, then the unit should be ok. I returned the unit.

Fantastic Scanner

I bought this scanner specifically for slides and photos. Some of the photos are b&w and are almost a century old. The Epson Perfection V600 is extremely fast when copying photos ( e.g. 4x6 in less than a minute.) I am running an I-7 3930k Intel processor with 32gb ram.I use a new sweat sock to gently dust off the photo before I scan it. This saves a lot of problems and time when touching up the finished product. When scanning photos, I use full auto mode and then touch up any blemishes with adobe 64bit photoshop. When scanning slides, I use professional mode and check the unsharp mask, grain reduction, color restoration and backlight correction. I also set the target size to 4x6. When viewing the finished product on a 55in led tv, the picture takes up almost the whole screen.pros- I am impressed by the speed of the V600. A 4x6 photo scans in less than a minute. 4 slides scan in under 2 minutes. Unlike what other reviewers have said about the flimsy slide holder, (connected at one point), I think it's fine. After scanning 4 slides, by experience, you should lift off the holder and clean the glass. The slides have cardboard borders. You'd be surprised how much fuzz comes off them. cons- Like other reviewers, I did find debris stuck on the underside of the glass. In my case, the location was in two places at the top of the scanner. You can deal with that situation in three ways, scan the photo in the debris area and touch up the photo, scan in an area that doesn't have the debris (my choice), or simply return the scanner. Sometimes the photo result is not right, upside down or sideways. I double click to view the photo and rotate it to the proper perspective with the turn buttons on windows photo viewer.
