Great, Inexpensive Espresso Machine

The original Mr. Coffee espresso machine I purchased lasted for many years, and when it finally quit working, I replaced it with the ECM 160. The replacement has been working fine. I mainly use it to brew the espresso, not for the frothing capability. I use a glass frothing pitcher to make the hot milk and froth, because I did not have much success using the frother on this machine. This coffee maker makes great espresso, as long as you use a fairly fine grind of coffee (but not too fine of a grind - not powdery). I also use only filtered water and clean it regularly, otherwise the taste is a bit off - but our water is hard. The only thing that could be improved upon is that the handles for the brewing basket holders have broken off on both of the machines owned. I tried to get a replacement basket holder, but it has been impossible to find. However, I would still consider replacing my current machine with the same model.

Actually on my third one. Works great for the price. My first one lasted many years and was going strong until the knob broke. Second one, the knob broke again in less than a year. Between these two I had a $200 Krups pump, but it took way too long for me to brew and the milk was always tepid and froth-less as the steam output was surprisingly weak. Ended up giving it away. I like hot frothy milk, so I bought number two. That died and I got a DeLonghi, which I still have and like. Saw the Mr Coffee on sale again at Target and couldn't pass it up for my third one. Will treat the knob gently, hopefully it will last like my first one. If it weren't for the weak knob, I'd give it five stars.

Terrible chemical taste

I got this machine a Christmas gift from my parents - I was so excited about this until I made the first cup and it tasted like plastic/metal/chemicals. We couldn't figure out why - or how. We cleaned it brewed vinegar and let the vinegar sit in the chamber as stated in manual and no such luck. In so disappointed, thankfully target has a good return policy. This will go back to the store today.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Tastes like plastic.

This was a Christmas gift i was really excited about. I went out and bought freshly ground espresso. I followed the instructions, but it didn't taste right. I bought a tamper and starbucks espresso and have tried over and over but it has a strong plastic taste. It's a shame because it work really well. You can get a really nice froth on the milk. But in the end not worth it.

Coffee smells and tastes like meled plastic

I've had two of these machines before, and just got a third one (the last one stopped frothing the milk after 2.5 years of daily use). The new machine has an awful plastic smell, even after thoroughly cleaning it (incl. with vinegar) multiple times. Haven't had a latte in three days (liquid cancer is not my thing), while debating what else to try. Will probably end up returning it this coming weekend.
I was planning to get one more of these as a housewarming gift for a friend, but will now have to think of something different, unfortunately.
Disappointed and somewhat alarmed.

Horrible metallic taste! I can't get rid of it.

I really really wanted this for Christmas and was very adamant that this was the one I wanted. Now I feel guilty because I don't use it. The machine smells like burned metal and the coffee tastes like the machine smells. I tried descaling with vinegar as suggested, and it lessened a bit, but it is still not drinkable. Overall a bitter disappointment. The machine will be returned this week.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
