Good as a Manual Lens Only
on March 2, 2010

The glass in the lens is good, but as others have pointed out, the autofocus stops working after light use. This makes the lens useful only as a manual focus lens. With that in mind, it's overpriced. If you find one for sale, make a big deal to the seller about the autofocus being broken, and get a good deal on a decent manual lens.
Pros: nice bokeh
Cons: Poor build quality, autofocus stops working

Nothing great apart from the 1.4 aperture.

Dated design, Micro-USM motor for AF has a clutch that is too easy to break. Canon should've updated this with ring USM a long time ago. I used it a decade ago and never used it again. NOT recommended.

Great in low light

I have tried this lens on my Canon 7d digital and my Canon Elan 7 film camera with T-max p3200 film. I found that when the lens is open to f/1.4 the camera (7d) has a hard time finding sharp focus in dim light, and I have to switch to manual focus to obtain a sharp focus. That is more the problem of the camera focusing system than the lens. I like the fact that the lens can be used both in my film and digital cameras, since I enjoy both at various times. Also, I have had good luck with refurbished lenses from Canon, so I am confident this one will last.

Not Worth Purchasing

I owned this lens for a year but didn't use it very often until the last three months. The focus is terrible. I would tell it to focus on one point and the lens would focus in back of it. It was an absolute pain trying to shoot photojournalism, events that only happen once, with such a slow, imprecise lens. I missed out on many shots because this lens could not automatically focus quickly. Do not buy this lens. It is a waste of money.
Pros: Super-sharp images
Cons: Slow auto-focus, Poor build quality

Short Life Span

This lens has a history with AF problems with the very min. of usage. I need a fast lens and I wanted to stay with the Canon brand. Now I will be forced to try a different brand for 50mm f/1.4. I love the L series lens. I wish canon made one in 50mm range.
Pros: Super-sharp images
Cons: Poor build quality
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
