When people say the waterpik is quiet, they mean it's quiet like a "quiet" hair dryer. Meaning it's very loud. Louder than an electric toothbrush.
Disappointment number 2 for me is that the water coming through the machine has a plastic taste. I've run 20+ tanks of water through it and the weird taste hasn't gone away. I run a full tank of water through the machine before using it each time for that reason, and when spraying the water directly into the sink it's impossible not to mist the entire counter around the sink.
It's also pretty difficult to use in general without getting wet. You can minimize the mess, but you can't eliminate it. I wish the button required you to press to spray, rather than press to stop. I also wish the base of the cord swiveled to allow better movement. The wand is kind of spring loaded to return to one angle, and if I pull to cord too hard the device may move or fall. I need the wand to be be more flexible.
The plastic feels cheaply made too. For the price I would expect nice plastic with a velvety sort of feel, maybe a grip on the handle, a tank and lid that snap into place more securely, and a higher quality knob. This is made of the kind of plastic I would expect knock offs to be made of.
Last complaint is that you can't clear all the water out. There is always water sitting in it, which isn't ideal for a device that's used in your mouth and stored in the bathroom.
It may be helpful to know that setting 10 is enough to cause stinging around gums and 2 is the max setting I can use to clean tonsils without causing bleeding. I use half the reservoir to clean tonsils, and about two tanks to clean all my teeth.
After several months of owning it I find that I'm using it less than once a week because it's messy, loud, the water tastes like plastic, and it needs to be cleaned each use. I think it's overpriced and overrated.
