Hello gabbygal - There is definitely a trick to it. We have found the best advice we can give is to place the flosser in your mouth before turning it on, then make sure you look down into your sink as you go; keep your mouth slightly open so water can drain into the sink. For future reference, we do recommend that you clean the unit at least once a month and soak the handle in distilled white vinegar and water to prevent this issue. The product is also a motor-driven appliance, some noise is normal. As for the leaking, please make sure the jet tip is fully engaged.
