Question

Do remote starter systems disable the remote keys that come with cars?

I'm thinking of buying an Avital 4113 one-button remote starter for our 2010 Honda Civic EX-L. But I'm worried doing so will disable the remote key that came with the car. Can they both be used, one to remote start the car, the other as normal (open/close door/trunk, panic button)?

Thanks

Start the car with your key and try to use the factory remote/keyfob. If it does not function that is exactly how it will be when your car is remote started. The aftermarket r/s will not disable your factory features as it is disabled from the factory when your car is running. You have options, get to your local bestbuy and speak with an autotech about your best solution.

Question

When engine is remote started, you can't unlock doors remotely?

This is a follow-up to my recent question regarding the Avital 4113, but pertains to any remote starter. Thanks for your answer BTW.

You said the factory key is disabled when the engine is started with the remote starter. Does that mean, generally speaking, you can only open the doors manually with your factory key, if they're locked that is. (ie, there's no way to unlock the doors remotely when the engine is started with a remote starter, because your factory key is disabled when the engine is running?)

Hope that's clear. Thanks for your answer.

the 4113 has the capability to unlock your car when it is remote started. There is a small labor charge to achieve this but then you could infact unlock the doors remotely with the remote for the 4113 when the car is running.

It has nothing to do with the product, it has everything to do with the way your car was designed. Go start car with your key, now with the vehicle running, try using your keyless entry(lock, unlock buttons on remote). If they do not function that is how they will be when you remote start the car. The avital is capable of unlocking your car when it is running for an extra labor charge. If you want longer range than perhaps a viper is the way to go giving you keyless functions while the vehicle is running and longer range. If you park where you can't see your car, then the 5301 would be a good choice as it gives 2 way confirmation on the remote when the car is started.

The best 1 would be the Viper 5901. That will give you security, remote start and keyless entry as well as up to 1 mile range.

You will need to contact your local bestbuy and speak with an autotech. It is ultimately up to the installer if he/she is comfortable with the product given to them to install. We want you to be happy and the install to outlast your ownership of the vehicle, if we are not confident in the product then it is not in our best interest to tackle the job.

For basic remote start you are in the $300 range. If you want to add keyless entry(toyota disables factory keyless function when car is running) Then you will probably be in the $350 range
