Question

What is difference between buying phone upgrade at Best Buy vs Verizon?

I am upgrading a phone on my existing Verizon account. No change to plan, just upgrading phone. Is there any difference (ie additional contract with Best Buy) between doing at Best Buy vs Verizon store? Phone prices are differenct and was wondering why if the plan is exactly the same? Please let me know if there are any differences in the 'fine print' that I may be missing.
Thank you

Verizon just told me that even though I bought the phone at Best Buy, they will still help me with the manufacturer warranty on the phone. I can still go through them, get a replacement phone and all through Verizon during the first year for problems covered under the manufacturers warranty. Not a bad deal!

Actually there is one BIG difference....if you get the insurance Verizon insurance will send you another replacement phone that is the exact same phone and then you send your phone to them. Best Buy you have to provide your phone and they will give you a flip phone and it could take up to 5 weeks is what i was told. Due to a technical issue i will go from a touch screen phone (lots of texting) to a generic flip phone for 5 weeks....not the type of service i understood when i purchased the phone and the insurance.....REALLY NOT HAPPY

The biggest differences you're going to see from shopping at Best Buy Mobile rather than the verizon store is our Customer Promise.

We think you deserve...
1. Straightforward pricing (NO MAIL IN REBATES!)
2. Greater selection of Phones & Carriers
3. Informed Impartial Advice
4. Someone to be there for the life of your phone.

Upgrading your phone at Best Buy Mobile does get you the same plan, (unless there might be a plan that's better for you that we help you set up) and the same contract agreement, you're agreeing to the same thing that you would at a verizon store, but you're not paying for, and waiting for a mail in rebate!

I recently upgraded my phone at Best Buy. You can keep your existing plan if you want. The nice thing about Best Buy is that you don't have to worry about rebates. They'll help you activate your new phone and even help transfer your contact information onto the new phone. You can keep your existing phone # and plan so the process is seemless. Best Buy sells lots of phones and make most of their money on accesories which help keep the phone prices low.

I did the same. My contract was up and my daughter wanted a new phone for Christmas. I got two droid incredibles for free. Two from Verizon was $150 for the first and second free so I saved $150. I renewed my contract, changed my plan, and added a line for the second phone. I did spend a little more time on the phone with Verizon getting everything set up but for the $150 savings was well worth it!

Hi! Thanks for your question.

If you are not eligible for a full two year upgrade then you would have to pay the full retail price of the device

If you want to but a complete different phone, you will likely have to pay the full price because people are not often qualify for upgrade or a discount price if their contract is not expire. The second thing to do is to search the retail price outside of your carrier store or website; it might be cheaper that way. If you need the same phone, do the following: put insurance on it. It often cost between $5 and $6 per month. When it continues to give problem, call your carrier and tell them the phone has problem. If they trouble shoot it and the problem can not be resolved, they will order a replacement phone. However, I don't know which type of phone you have but most smartphones replacement cost up to $150. If the phone you have worths like $200 to $600, paying the $150 replacement fee will not be a bad idea compare to paying $600 up front for a new phone.

It depends on how much time you have left on your contract and what the contract stipulations are. Most carriers do not charge the whole amount to get out of a contract towards the end. If you only have two months, the fee is probably around $20 and paying that instead of the noncontract price is infinitely more preferable. You can always talk to your carrier and make a deal with them. My daughter's phone was acting up and we went into our carrier and told them and they upgraded the phone even though there were 4 months left on her contract. She just entered a new contract. Carriers are highly competitive and will do this to keep your business.

Depending on how you intend to purchase the phone, you may be able to get the discounted price. If you are sticking with the same carrier, you should be able to renew your contract and get the phone at the new/upgrade price. You may have to actually inquiry with your carrier directly instead of trying to purchase through Best Buy.

You can always buy a new phone and switch your service to it, but may need to pay full price for it. I'd register for an online account at VZW.com or give them a call and check the upgrade status of your current phone(s). Even though you haven't finished your two year contract you may be eligible for an upgrade and they typically offer a discounted early upgrad price at some point later in your contract.

if it is time for ya to upgrade then ya will only have to pay the lowest price. If your not due for an upgrade then the full price has to be paid. Just remember any time ya upgrade or get another phone ya are automatically renewing another 2 year contract unless ya purchase a phone that says no contract required. I have Att, but it works the same as verizon on this respect. I have family members that have verizon. Hope this helps.

Fascinate has a superior screen and picture quality. It looks and feels great and highly responsive for anyone that likes gaming. It does not have a slide out keyboard, but rocks the swype keyboard standard option with has set the world record in text messaging ease and I must say is awesome. Samsung however, has been slow to update these phones so that doesn't leave a good feeling for future updates. Call quality is very good.

The Droid x has a slide out keyboard and a bigger screen I believe, but not the resolution of the Fascinate. The company has been decent when it comes to updates on this one.

Beware though, that going with Verizon will only allow you to update once every 2 years, and they are charging a lot more for data usage. On 4G the basic data package could easily be used up in 2 days. Though neither of these phones offers 4G and they do not have one yet that does. Verizon lacks in customer support, and on weekends forget it.

Sprint also offers the comparable phones in the Epic 4g and the EVO 4g. They have unlimited data, free voice turn by turn GPS, unlimited mobile to mobile anywhere in the US, more minutes all for just $69.99. I believe $10 more for the Epic and EVO though. But it will save you hundreds, and with Sprint you can upgrade your phone yearly. Customer support is 5 star rating! Weekends or weekdays, you get help in seconds with smart people.

The epic 4g has the same size screen as the Fascinate, but also has a slide out keyboard.

The EVO is a powerful phone that can provide internet for up to 8 devices, also comes with swype on it, a 4.3 inch screen of real estate, easy to use, very call quality and reception. loaded with features and has the fastest current browser on the market of all phones including iphone 4

Hopefully this helps you

I have the Droid X and absolutely love it and a friend of mine has the Fascinate and she loves it so I don't think you can go wrong with either one. The main reason I chose the X was due to having Google Search and Navigation instead of Bing, which the Fascinate has. From what I understand, Bing is ok, but the search/nav tool of choice is Google...both great tools on the X. X also had a couple higher end specs, but probably not anything that is a noticeable difference. My vote would be the X, but think you'll love either one. I'd suggust going into a VZW store and trying them both out and buying the one that you like the look / feel of the best. Good luck!

The X is AMAZING, but the battery life sucks (about 10 hours active use)

The Fascinate is BEAUTIFUL and the battery life is longer.

You really need to just look at some of the built in hardware features of each to figure out which you want (for example, the Droid Incredible has a radio). Both AMAZING phones, I have the Incredible (slender X) and the wife has a Fascinate. I go back and forth on which one I love more.

The iPhone comes with a 1-year manufacturer warranty which only covers manufacturer defects. But, we offer the Geek Squad Black Tie protection which is $14.99 a month, and it covers most things, such as dust, heat, humidity, as well as normal wear and tear. It does NOT cover for loss, theft, or complete submersion.

We would have to have a credit or debit card on file for the monthly charges to be charged to, and it can be cancelled at any time. The Geek Squad Black-Tie protection must be purchased within 30 days of buying your iPhone at Best Buy.

Hi Gustavo-

I am sorry you ended up with a phone that did not work in Argentina-

Most of the devices you buy from USA cell phone providers should have advertised if the device was internationally capable or not.

If you are wanting to straight out replace the device, and you are going to be long term in Argentina, I would recommend checking with the local service providers there and asking them what models they recommend for International usage.

If you are still trying to use the device purchased from the USA, call the service provider directly (using a landline if needed) and ask them if the device is an internationally capable device.

If so, ask them if they can assist you while you are traveling to change the package on it currently to an international one, and is a SIM/chip is needed, ask them if they have any providers in Argentina who they recommend to get an open SIM chip with for use with that phone.

Best of luck,

Marie

Yes you can. I answered this question earlier today but maybe it was removed since I mentioned the poor results from my experience. I came back to clarify... you can and it covers your battery and original accesories that come with phone as well as the device itself. Worth it for me once it was honored. First BB I went to said they had to factory reset phone to replace battery. Second best buy honored the warranty with out issue. They are replacing the battery and the faulty charger. Ask questions and find the better Geek Squad. (Harbison Store in Columbia was super helpful!)

You can. I have done this for the past few years and I too am with Sprint. However the service plan at Best Buy is not all it says it is. I found this out the hard way. Best Buy claims they will replace your battery and original charger should they become defective, stop charging ect. I went in with a clear battery issue (battery rapidly discharging and visible defect on battery) Best Buy Geek Squad went through several steps before saying it might be the battery but to give me a battery they would have to factory reset my phone. Waste of money, imo. But you most certainly can get thier service. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your question!

While it is possible to purchase an iphone without a contract, we cannot unlock the phone. With the iphones we sell, you would have to contact AT&T to get it unlocked. We do not guarantee that they will unlock it, and we do not have any information regarding any fees that would apply for this.

Traditionally that answer is no. However it would not be a bad idea to call Best Buy and ask. Traditionally retailers will only offer warranty on the devices they sell. This is primarily because the retailer that sells you the phone is who gets the check for your renewal/sign up. To offer a warranty on a device that they have no profit in is usually just a bad business decision. I will suggest however to shop around before you buy. Most of the time you can find a third party retailer (Best Buy) that will not only offer a better extended warranty but will have the phone priced cheaper and without mail in rebates. People have a false idea that the corporate stores offer the best deal and that is most never the case.

The iPhone uses a different cellular technology that is not compatible with Sprint. The iPhone uses GSM, and Sprint is CDMA. The first uses sim cards. The second does not.

You would need to switch carriers if you wanted to utilize the iPhone to the fullest.
