It depends on your specific usage: stainless steel provides surgical-grade hygiene and therefore if is my preference against bacteria, fungus and germs that could evolve in the dishwasher's dark and humid environment.
Polymer finish requires more intensive cleaing to prevent bacteria, especially if you don't use the dishwasher in a daily basis. However, a WHITE polymer tub allows plenty of interior light, much more than light than you could ever find in a stainless steel tub.

Stainless is by far better, it's more durable, more sanitary, and it does not crack or melt. That is why high end dishwashers have this as an interior. It does make the product cost more but it is well worth the extra expense.

A stainless steel tub offers alot of benefits over a polymer finsh tub. With a stainless steel tub you have less odors and no stains. Its easier to clean and is alot more sanitary.

Question

Dishwasher rack is rusted

What are the options, if any, on the type of material you can choose from for the racks in the dishwasher? I see a lot of info about the tub, but nothing about the rack. The racks in my dishwasher are rusted beyond repair. I will be buying a new dishwasher soon and want to avoid this problem in the future.

In April I installed a Whirlpool DU1300 XTVQ1 bought from Best Buy. My old GE had rust on rack. Saleman told me the new racks are made of material and have same color through out and will not rust. I think this was an old problem mfg. have fixed.

Several of the new dishwasher generation have nylon racks which have no metal in them, so no rust. A good rule of them is that if it has a stainless steel interior tub, then it probably has nylon racks.

the racks are a silver/gray to match the interior. The material is similar to most racks. Never found a rack material option on any dishwasher. I bought this dishwasher recently and it's great.

I would buy the kit the saleperson recommends. Return it and get $ back if not needed. Better to have when need than to make another trip for installation parts. Also recommend you replace copper water line with flexible hose when you install.

I suggest the connection kit (sold seperately.) You could install without, but when replacing an old unit it is ALWAYS best to use new connections with a new appliance (especially when dealing with a water and electrical combo).

Question

What brand dishwasher runs for the shortest time to wash the dishes?

We have an LG dishwasher that has recently quit working and will be purchasing a new dishwasher. The LG took 2 hours to run a normal cycle and we want to get a dishwasher that takes MUCH less time to run! Which brand and model takes the least time to complete a normal cycle?

I just purchased a Bosch with a feature called EcoSense. As I understand it a sensor monitors the water and adjusts the time by the cleanliness of the water. After a month of use it seems to run for less than an hour, even though it starts out at 128 minutes.

The Whirlpool Quiet Partner II also takes about two hours to comoplete its wash cycle, but I've never seen dishes so clean! It also has a one-hour cycle that you can choose if you are in a hurry. It costs only $299 and does a MUCH better job than any other dishwasher I have ever used. Hope this helps.

I've tried a few, including the newer LGs, and have found that the washers that take longer (~2 hrs) clean much more thoroughly than quick washers (1 hr or less). The easiest way to test this is to eat a plate of rice, and then see how well the dishwasher cleans the plate using different models or cycle times. You'll notice that in most cases, the rice will be completely cleaned off the plate in just under 2 hours.

you can put tall items like pasta pots and such in them because they maximize the height of the interior plus have an adjustable top shelf. The kitchenaid tall tub is excellent. I just bought it & love it.

basically it just means that there is a few more inches inside the dishwasher... you can fit a little more.. it does not really change the dimensions of the unit so if you have a standard tub now you should be ok.

You have to call about install price because it varies depending on where you live. FYI I live in CA and had to pay (1) for delivery *plus* (2) for install. They were each done by 2 different independent contractors Best Buy works with

All I can say is I bought this dishwasher and it is VERY quiet. When you have scientific questions I recommend going to google.com and just type in your question and trust me, if there's an answer you will find it.

Decibel is a specific measureable sound level. Quiet Sound package sounds like product features to cut down on noise level. I am guess a quiet sound package will lower the decibel level - but the important metric is decibel level.

Best Buy groups their washers by decibel range.

Question

Why is cutout height shorter than height of dishwasher

Here are two lines from the specs of a dishwasher that I am considering:

Product Height34-1/2"

Cutout Height (in.)33-7/8

I have a 1940s kitchen. The space for the dishwasher is very tight. I measured the space it is 34 inches, but who knows if it is exact? But, I am confortable with a 33-7/8 cutout, but why is the unit taller than the space it needs to fit into?
